Existentialism Is a Humanism Jean Paul Sartre

Peoples perception towards Existentialism PRINCIPLES OF EXISTENTIALISM 1. Man is not only that which he conceives himself to be, but that which he wills himself to be, and since he conceives of himself to be after being thrown into existence, man is nothing other than what he makes of himself. 2. Man is free, man is freedom (no determinism) 3. Not quietism nor a pessimistic description of man. It is also not an attempt to discourage man from taking action. 4. I think therefore I am the absolute truth of consciousness confronting itself. 5. Establish the human kingdom as a set of values distinct from the material. 6. Existentialism will never consider man as an end, because man is constantly in the making. 7. Existentialism is optimistic.

Criticism

Dark, gloomy, dark side of life Not its pessimism but its optimism It (Existentialism) gives the possibility of individual choice

ANGUISH, ABANDONMENT AND DESPAIR Anguish a man who commits himself, and who realizes that he is not only the individual that he chooses to be, but also the legislator choosing at the same time what humanity as a whole should be, cannot help but be aware of his own full and profound responsibility. // [Something negative] [cf. Abraham in Kierkegaard] Abandonment (Heideggers favorite expression) God does not exist; we must bear the full consequences of the assertion. nothing will have changed if God does not exist (radicalism). it is we, ourselves, who decide who we are to be. Such abandonment entails anguish. Despair We must limit ourselves to reckoning only with those things that depend on our will, or on the set of probability that enable action.

Two Kinds of Existentialist

God the Creator Superlative artisan // [to the highest level craftsman] We usually conceive //[human perception . . . but is it really what God is?]

The Christians

Atheistic Existentialist

Existence precedes essence

more consistent (what they stand for) if God does not exist, there is at least one being in whom existence precedes essence.

Subjectivity: point of departure

Man or Human Reality

He materializes in the world Encounters himself Defines himself

// [Does this mean that Existence Precedes Essence is kind of a process rather than just an idea?]

Projection rather than will Condemned to be free Human universality exists, but it is not a given; it is a perpetual construction Man is nothing other than his own project. He exists only to the extent that he realizes himself, therefore he is nothing more than the sum of his actions, nothing more than his life.

// [Does this mean that, if w/out this, hes man though he exists, but if nothing he does not have an essence, hes what, a void?]

Man finds himself in a complex social situation in which he himself is committed, and by his choices commits all mankind and he cannot avoid choosing. Whatever he does, he cannot avoid full responsibility for his situation. He must choose w/out reference to any pre-established values, but it would be unfair to tax him with capriciousness.

There is no legislator other than man and he must, in his abandoned state, make his own choices, and also because we show that it is not by turning inward, but by constantly seeking a goal outside of himself in the form of liberation, or of some special achievement, that man will realize himself as truly human.

Subjectivism

The freedom of the individual subject to choose what he will be.

Mans inability to transcend human subjectivity (fundamental meaning of existentialism)

Not for man alone, but for all men

// [Does this mean that since God does not exist, man serves as/functions as God? So therefore, granting w/out admitting, Man=God
