Lesson 1 : The Design Process and Planning Using GANTT Charts

Prior Student Knowledge:

Students knowledge & skills as taught throughout the unit. The Design Process Collaborating in Office 365 with Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Working and navigating through D2L

Minds On: 15 minutes

Day 1

Day 2

Using an opened up PC under a document camera and an LCD projecting onto a white screen, ask students to show you where RAM is located. What is its purpose? Why is it important? Tell students that they will be building a RAM circuit called a 3 x 2 Memory Circuit. Demonstrate a completed 3 x 2 Memory Circuit to the class, also using a document camera and an LCD. Students will see that it can store 2 bits of data in one of 3 separate memory locations or registers, but they will be confused as to how and why it does this. Think, Pair, Share: Ask them to quickly write down 5 questions they have about the circuit, then share this list with a partner, then with a group of 4.

Day 3

Launch the GANTTProject Software on the LCD. Ask students if they have ever made a GANTT chart and what its used for (many will have already seen one and/or used one as its used in other courses such as Computer Studies and Tech Design for planning large-scale projects). List the major components of a GANTT chart. Use the software to demonstrate these aspects: tasks, milestones, time constraints, timelines, etc. Tell students they do not have to use this software, as long as they meet the requirements and expectations of creating a GANTT chart

Show some additional features of the GANTTProject Software: adding Resources, Predecessors. Ask students to share their input. Demonstrate to students how to export a PDF and what it looks like. Remind students this is due at the end of class into the DropBox.

Action/Work On:
Day 1: Class Presentations and Wiki In groups of 4, students are to formulate a list of steps needed to complete the circuit and how much time they will spend on each portion of the build. This task will be completed using a shared Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation in Office 365. One person from each group will create a new presentation and share it with the remaining 3. Groups are to use visual tools, such as flowcharting symbols to illustrate the process and state the time needed to complete each part of the process. Groups are then to upload it to the class Wiki entitled, Steps for Success. Groups have 40 minutes to compete this. Each group will present their presentation to the class in 3 to 4 minutes. Provide groups with plenty of oral descriptive feedback, but attempt to have the groups assess other groups. Day 2: Launch Project Take students to the D2L site to show them all of the info that is posted: links, documents for understanding the circuit, rubric, project deliverables, etc. Put up the TEJ4M_3x2 Memory Circuit Project on the projector and review with it students. Highlight the deliverables/milestones that are the necessary checkpoints that must be completed in the project. The Dropbox in D2L will be used as a way to keep track and manage when students hand in their work. Review the rubric, highlighting each of the 4 categories. Inform students that the various deliverables/milestones in addition to observations made by the teacher will comprise the evaluation. Students will work on completing the GANTT chart as it is due at the end of the tomorrows class. Direct students to watch the video posted on how to use all the features. Many will want to explore the software on their own. Some will want help. Gather those who need some additional assistance and work with them. Or you could also match stronger students who are good at working with other students and having them act as mentors. Day 3: Students complete GANTT Chart Take time to walk around and see how students are doing with their charts. Support those in greatest need first and be certain they are saving their work. Students who complete this early can go on to complete the other parts of the project.

Consolidation and Connections / Debrief:

Day 1

Day 2

Class discussion this will be done as we watch each presentation. The goal is to have groups learn from other groups by questioning why they chose things a certain way.

Day 3

Ask students to post one tip on the discussion pages about using the GANTT software. Pull these up and discuss them

If there is time, post a few exemplars on the LCD and ask students to present their charts. Some may need more time to complete their charts, so give them the full class to complete.

Modifications and Accommodations

Identified Students Computer options (most of it is done on computer) Graphic organizers (e.g. GANTT chart) One-on-one assistance with explaining/rewording information Close proximity to instructor Organization coaching Working in groups with, and on computers next to, strong students Extended time, if required ELL Students Partnering with a strong student during group activities Peer tutoring Repetition of information with one-on-one assistance from instructor Rewording/rephrasing of information Chunking of new skills and concepts Organization coaching Oral responses Extra time, if required

Differentiation
Content

The project is fairly streamlined for a reason. Students are constructing a large circuit that is capable of storing data. There isnt much flexibility in how that circuit functions, therefore there isnt much flexibility in the content. Certain parts must be completed. HOW students complete it, WHEN they complete and end certain tasks, and WHAT tools they use to complete it is entirely differentiated.

Process The process by which students plan out their projects using the GANTT chart is entirely openended Product

How the GANTT chart is completed is also entirely open-ended. Students can use any software they choose (e.g. table in MS Word, Excel, GANTTProject)

Environment Students have many options: they can work on their own with music, use the computers in the class, bring their own computers, work in close proximity to their peers or on their own in a quiet space or even an alternative workspace outside the class.

Overall and Specific Curriculum Expectations:

A1. demonstrate an understanding of internal buses and storage devices, and of advances in computer technology; A1.1 describe the function of internal buses within computer systems (e.g., data bus; memory bus; address bus; buses in CPUs, RAM, and chipsets); A1.2 identify appropriate storage devices for various computing requirements (e.g., optical drives, flash drives, single and arrayed hard drives); B3. design, build, test, and troubleshoot interfaces and other circuits that meet specific design requirements; B3.1 use a design process (see pp. 2223) and appropriate software (e.g., circuit simulation software, CAD [computer-aided design] software) to design circuits;

Assessment & Evaluation:
