Trek is a collection of works by David Carson. The cover allows you to observe the chaos and tone of his grunge style.

A cover of Ray Gun magazine designed by Carson displays his true belief of using type as a medium, not just a communication tool.Note the broken text elements he employs throughout.

The early 1990s gave birth to the grunge movement, a then popular style found in music and art. With the publication of Ray Gun magazine in 1992, Carson unleashed his fractured and archaic style in full spreads. He chose to root his pieces in typography in order to stress its versatility as a medium, rather than just text. His works were often illegible, sometimes even employing fonts such as Dingbat as the typeface for large interviews. Carson also likes to use photographic design in his pieces for a more realistic appeal. From 1995 to 2000 he opened his own studio David Carson Design in NYC. He views his own work as subjective, personal and very self-indulgent.

Beach Culture was the first creative stint where Carson shocked the design world with his explosive style. Carsons style also includes photographs as visual elements in his work.

When I view his work, I am deeply inspired. His chaotic genius and haphazard raw abstraction of normal type is unlike anything most of the graphic design world has ever seen before. Carson goes beyond the written word and creates something entirely new based on something so asinine, such as the legibility (or lack thereof). He departs from the clean cut world of efficiency and is not afraid to butcher the design elements he employs. He is referred to as the father of grunge by the graphic design community. Carson has shown the world that art and imagery can be created using typography as a medium, which was his over-all goal. I greatly enjoy the work of David Carson, and I consider him to be the most influential of all the graphic designers Ive come across so far. Other clients of David Carsons include Transworld Surf, Armani, Audi, Blue Magazine, Metropoils, Nine Inch Nails, Obama, Quicksilver, Western Union, and Yale University.

Carson designed several of Nine Inch Nails (NIN) album covers, including The Fragile.
