Lewis and Clark put Omaha on the map before there were maps, making it a key stop on their excursion west. Omaha sits on a part of Thomas Jeffersons Louisiana Purchase, and Abraham Lincoln decided Omaha was the perfect spot to start the transcontinental railroad. A noteworthy bunch who saw the potential of this river city.

Welcome About Omaha

Take Your Pic

There are a lot of fun photo ops throughout the cityOmaha is Instagram heaven!

On the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge you can stand in two states at the same timeone foot in Nebraska and one foot in Iowa. Unique public art throughout Downtown Omaha is just begging you to feed it. This is one of 13 unique park benches in the Gene Leahy Pedestrian Mall.

Stand next to a real Fork in the Road @ 1115 S 7th St in Omahas Little Italy neighborhood. If youre wondering what the heck grain silos look like, these are some of the coolest around. The best way to see these giant works of art is to drive east on I-80 toward Downtown Omaha. Touching Chef Boyardees Toque (chef hat) is said to bring good luck in the kitchen. This 6 tall statue sits in front of ConAgra Foods World headquarters at 10th and Farnam.

Get into the act with the ornate and beautiful bronze street performers who juggle, mime and stilt-walk in front of CenturyLink Center Omaha. See how big you are compared to one of the largest public murals in the country. Fertile Ground can be seen from almost anywhere in the North Downtown area.

Take part in a stampede through the city with a larger-than-life wagon train that startles a herd of buffalo and scares a ock of geese that y into the high-rise First National Bank Tower. Youll nd it at 15th and Capitol Avenue and can follow it as it travels 7 city blocks.

Tubing and Tanking

Forget the boattry tubing and tanking down the scenic Elkhorn River. Which should you choose? It depends on how wet you want to get. With tanking, you oat down the river in an 8-footdiameter stock tank tted with custom made picnic tables. With tubing, you are a little more intimate with the water, sitting in commercial-grade innertubes with your feet and other body parts dangling in the river. Both offer a fun way to oat and enjoy the outdoors.

Sophisticated
Wine serves as the perfect accessory to a fine French meal, the main attraction, or anything in between. A wine acionados heaven, brix is best described as a total wine experience. The brix Wine Bistro serves 64 wines by the ounce or by the glass from the Enomatic Wine Serving System, an innovative wine dispenser from Italy. Also nd favorite international wines, craft beers or premium liquors in the extensive retail store. Walking into La Buvette is similar to walking into a petite French caf. Located in Omahas Old Market Entertainment District, La Buvette is a wine bar, restaurant and retail wine shop. Choose from more than 100 bottles of wine and enjoy it with small plates of smoked salmon, prosciutto, rillettes and foie gras. Corkscrew Wine & Cheese, Lot 2s Wine Bar and Nosh Wine Loungethe wine list could go on and on

and Friendly
Whether its the light zest of cold ale, the mild avor of a frosty lager, or the heavy malt taste of a dark stout, Omaha is beer country. Beer Corner USA is a friendly oasis offering separate beer experiences and more than 50 beers on tap. Crescent Moon Alehouse anchors the beer lovers paradise with pub food, a relaxed atmosphere and (of course) unique beers. Omahas German beer hall Huber Haus offers an authentic experience with bier, brats and Das boots! Max and Joes is the cozy neighborhood tavern, and Beertopia serves as Omahas premier beer emporiumnearly 600 international specialty beers line the shelves, including Achel Blonde, Serajn Donker and Mc Chouffe. An Omaha original, Upstream Brewery is known for creating innovative avors; the award-winning, hand-crafted beers are brewed fresh on-site in a variety of stylesfrom their hoppy Capitol Pale Ale to sweet raspberry lager.

Search for Shooter

Benson is an urban neighborhood known for hot music and cold beer, but a little known fun fact is that the area bars share a special pet. Shooter, the Benson Bar Cat, will be seen sauntering in and out of the neighborhood bars greeting patrons and nuzzling bartenders. Local hot spots where you might catch Shooter for a photo op include the Barley Street Tavern and Burkes Pub. After you track down Shooter, head over to Krug Park and enjoy one of 50 brews on tap or pick out one of the popular Bloody Mary mixtures. The extensive menu includes the Bloody Maria, Fiery Caesar and Bourbon Bloody Mary. To catch even more indie rock, head over to The Waiting Room. The club mirrors the hip, cool atmosphere and mood of Benson. For more entertaining neighborhoods go to page 76.

Where to Eat & Play Entertaining Neighborhoods

t the e n d of the 19th century, Omaha was in its prime as a great railroad center, connecting the settled East with the wide-open West. The Old Market area was at the height of its splendorbustling with produce dealers, buyers and transporters. The bustle continued until the 1950s when Omahas westward expansion and radical changes in grocery marketing abruptly brought the activity to a halt. Thats when Sam Mercer, threatened with building condemnation notices, proposed to rescue his familys red brick warehouses by renovating them for new uses. Most people thought him imprudent. Today, they call him a visionary. Mercers role has been a delicate balance of making things happen and allowing things to evolve. Nonetheless, he is the rst to admit that there never was a master plan for developing the Old Market. We knew these warehouses had possibilities, and to tear them down to construct contemporary buildings would have been like painting over the Mona Lisa. Change happens all the time, but it has to be the right kind of change. Preservation and maintenance of the architectural integrity of the buildings remains a guiding principle. The Old MaRket Whether youre a rst-time tourist, a downtown worker or an Omaha resident, there is always something to see and do in the Old Market.

beautiful? There are more than a dozen locations to pick from. Want something more casual? Less expensive? Family oriented? Ethnic? You never need to leave the Old Market to nd great food!
