MEANING OF COMMON TERMS

Spreadsheet: MS Excel is a spreadsheet application because it allows you to enter numbers into grid for calculations. Grid: It is a network of blocks formed with the interception of verticals and horizontal lines. Column: It is an area between two vertical lines. Row: It is an area between two horizontal lines. Cells: These are the boxes formed as a result of the interception of columns and rows. Cell is named by the combination of the alphabet of the column and the number on the row that it falls. Workbook: All works are done and save in a workbook.

Worksheets: The main sheet where you list and analyze data in the workbook
Sheet tabs: These are tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. Each tab represent different worksheets Formula bar: The field where the content of the cell can be viewed and edited Name box: The area where the name of the active cell is displayed

APPLICATION OF MS EXCEL 2007

Some of the areas where MS Excel is applicable include: In schools and other educational institutions (for professors, principals, headmasters, teachers and students) In firms (for secretaries and clerks) In financial institutions (banks In Hospitals (for nurses and doctors) In religious organizations Examples will be given for each of the above

USES FOR TEACHER

Class teacher who gave tests on subjects to his/her students or pupils will find MS Excel spreadsheet very useful and helpful as it will assist in analyzing information of the students and calculating their grades.

AN EXAMPLE FOR TEACHERS

In ABC Grammar School, the 7 students of J.S.S 2 class attempted final tests on 4 subjects (English, Mathematics, Introtech, Business Studies). Names of the students and their respective marks in each subjects are as follows.

Question: Use MS Excel 2007 spreadsheet to: Analyze the above information. Calculate the total marks for each student. Create a formula to check if a student is PROMOTED by scoring the average mark of 200 and above or otherwise FAILED by scoring below the average. Check the best subject for each student (through score point) Note: Maximum score in any subject is 100

SPREADSHEET SOLUTION

The information are analyze on the spreadsheet as above

SPREADSHEET SOLUTION (CONT.)

Calculating the Total Marks The mathematical SUM function is used in the following formula to calculate the total marks for each student. =SUM(B5:E5) Formula interpretation: Add up all the content of cell B5 to E5. Calculating the Promotional Status The logical IF function is used in the following formula to calculate the Promotional status for each student. =IF(F5=>200,PASSED,FAILED) Formula interpretation : If the content of cell F5 is equal to or greater than 200, show PASSED as a text, otherwise show FAILED as a text.

SPREADSHEET SOLUTION (CONT.)

Calculating the GRADE The logical IF function is nested in the following formula to calculate the GRADE for each student. =IF(F5=>300, EXCELLENT, IF(F5=>250, VERY GOOD, IF(F5=>200, GOOD, IF(F5=>0, POOR)))) Formula interpretation: If the content of cell F5 is equal to or greater than 300, show EXCELLENT as a text; If the content of cell F5 is equal to or greater than 200, show VERY GOOD as a text; If the content of cell F5 is equal to or greater than 300, show GOOD as a text; If the content of cell F5 is equal to or greater than 200, show POOR as a text.

SPREADSHEET SOLUTION (CONT.)

Calculating the Subject Grade The logical IF function is nested with the mathematical MAX function in the following formula to calculate the Subject Grade for each student. =IF(MAX(B5:E5)=B5, GOOD IN MATHEMATICS
