or Louis Sachar in general As a teacher, I read a lot of juvenile fiction and much of it is good! Some of i t is forgettable, but this book is not. I love this book. This book is about Bradley Chalkers. Bradley is a bully. Bradley is a behavior p roblem. He doesn't do his homework, classwork...anything. Teachers pass him from grade to grade just so that don't have to teach him again. Now, he's in 5th gra de and his school hires a counselor named Miss Davis, or Carla, as she likes to be called. The rest, as they say, is history (for Bradley). And, yes...he does go into the girls' bathroom! My students love this book. There are so many beautiful touches: his absurdly long list of topics to talk about, his talking stuffed animals, the picture of the monster with the heart.... I was pleasantly suprised by this book, because the cover didn't indicate to me it would be so intense or layered. (The cover is a large, fairly realistic rende ring of a surprised boy's face- and it looked like it would be light and maybe s illy.) It had those layers without stepping out of being accessible to kids- whi ch I think is pretty artful.(less) Michelle Oct 12, 2007 Michelle rated it: 4 of 5 stars Read in October, 2007 I don't know why lately, but I've had problems committing myself to serious, lon g, adult novels. It's about problem child, bully o f the school Bradley Chalkers, and how he changes through friendship and believi ng in himself. It's a very sweet story that I'd recommend to anybody. Also, Loui s Sachar, the author, is a genius. I love his other books that I've read, like H oles, and who can forget the Wayside School stories? He is known as the trouble maker throughout the school He goes through a lot of struggles and neve r seems to think that he can do good. A counselor comes to the school and become s Bradley's best friend. She makes such a difference in his life and the other c

In the end Bradley gets his gold star, he turns in his hom ework and makes friends. I think that this book should be read to any age studne ts. For younger grades you could do a read aloud, but it might be a little long for k-1. The older grades could use this book as a chapter book that they have t o read. I also believe that high schoolers would enjoy to be read aloud this boo k. The book "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" by Louis Sachar is a humerous no vel that describes the 5th grade year of Bradley Chalkers. Bradley is a trouble maker as he sits in the last seat, last row. He does not earn any gold stars as he refuses to do his work, scribbles on every piece of paper imaginable, and get s "Fs" on every assignment and test he does. He has no friends, except for his c ollection of toy animals that he talks to when he gets home. His dad used to be a cop until he was shot in the leg, and his sister is annoying and laughs at him . His mom tries hard to help him, but no one likes Bradley. That is, until a new kid, Jeff comes to school and he meets Carla, the school counselor who wears cr azy clothes. Bradley tries to change, but it isn't easy. Espeically with black e yes, stupid girls, birthday parties, and trying to learn how to fit in. It also doesn't help when you go into the girl's bathroom, either! This book is very funny, and it is easy for students of all ages to relate to. T here are parts where you will laugh out loud as you witness Bradley and all of h is mistakes. My favorite part was when Bradley talked about how he went to a bir thday party and was kicked out for sitting on the cake. There are also a lot of meaningful parts where Carla tries to help Bradley change, and I want to read th e book that she loans Bradley for his book report. I did not like the character of Mrs. Ebbel the teacher, who is mean and ignores Bradley. I also felt that Bra dley's sister was annoyng. The ending was good, and made me beleive that any stu dent can accomplish anything they set their mind to when they have someone to tr ust. I would rate this book as a 10 (it is my favorite book) because it made me want to become a teacher. I would recommend it to anyone who loves books that are fun ny, heartfelt, and not boring! It makes you want to earn gold stars. Eventually as the days pass, I tried to read this book by myself and as I looked through my classmate's updates, I found this book. Amazingly, I still remember this book and what it was clearly about. In my elementary school, I can relate this back to the book. Indeed there were s ome kids that did not enjoy school and tend to fail everything and disrupt the c lass while in class discussions. The character development was much stronger than I expected in such a short book and there was no easy attribution of black hats and white hats. Bradley's family was quite pleasant and not to blame for his behaviour and the t eachers though obviously exasperated with him were also more than happy to respo nd to any improvement he made. To be honest in the first few pages I had serious concerns about Bradley's menta l health with him being so totally isolated from the outside world and communica ting only with his toys. Although the story was obviously leading us to the 'new Bradley' the setbacks he

suffered were realistic and peripheral story lines showed us that none of the c hildren passed through life completely untroubled. The only niggle I have is that during the party scene the author seemed to be la ying the foundation for further development of Jeff's character but nothing came of it. I did wonder if book was aimed at too young an audience (or maybe at non-reading under-achievers like Bradley) because I felt that the story and the author's ta lents would have been better served if the story had been in a longer format. My other kids like d it as well, and were eager to have a "family book club" on it so I happily too k a break from "The Left Hand of Darkness" (a permanent one, as it turns out) to read this. It's actually a very good children's book about two kids and their social diffic ulties; one who's simply new at school, and another with complex behavioral prob lems. They both end up forming a relationship with the school counselor and impr oving their situations. The story can be simplistic at times, which I guess is t o be expected in a kids' book. I thought the young, pretty counselor who's disap proved of by the parents was a bit of a cliche (this book was very reminiscent o f "The Cat Ate My Gymsuit" at times), but I imagine young readers will be less c ynical than I am. Overall, the story is engaging and there's actually a lot to d iscuss. As the story begins, the reader learns that nobod y likes Bradley and that Bradley doesn t like anybody, and it s not until counselor Carla shows up that the reason is revealed: Bradley is afraid to try anything be cause he is afraid to fail. Bradley could easily be an unlikable character, but the reader sees him in all aspects of his life: in school, where he is the outca st; in his room, talking to his animal figurines; and in the counselor s office, w here he begins to come out of his shell. Repeated phrases ( Call the zoo if you do n t believe me! ) and awkward situations (the title being one of them) make for a hu morous tale that shows, like many of Sachar s other works, the differences between children, who are shown as innocent and understanding, and adults, who are show n as unwilling to accept change and hard to deal with.(less) Like this review? yes Loading add a comment 145

As a kid, you assume that you're the only one who feels so alone, so weak, so st range and out of place in the world. When I picked this book up (for no apparent reason that I remember) I realized with astonishment that there were other kids in the world who staged elaborate imaginary stories with their animal toys, tha t there were other kids who felt special sitting at their dad's desk, doing home work with a clean sheet of paper and a sharp pencil rather than a wrinkled paper from the bottom of the bookbag and a dull pencil. The counsler doesn't care because she thinks he is just like everyone else.Mostly nobody likes Bradley because of the way he ac ts,responds, and treat others. His only friend Jeff Fishkins is not his friend any more but might be later. The reason Jeff is not his friend is because these boys came up to him during lunchtime when he told bradley he was going to do somethin

g those boys came up to him and was talking about how he beat up Bradley after s chool(which was not true). Then Jeff was like yeah i made him cry and stuff like that. The truth is Bradley got beat up by a girl after school that afternoon, and not by Jeff. After Jeff talked to the boys he didn't want to be Bradley's friend any more because he started to be friends with the other boys.Later when Jeff w ent to the counsler's office he said "I got called up to the principal's office and the principal asked me did I beat up Bradley Chalkers and I said yes only be cause wouln't stop bothering me".What Jeff said to the boys was not true because when he got called up to the office he said"Why would I beat up Bradley and he is my best friend"was his only until those boys messed up Jeff's and Bradley's r elationship as being best friends. Then something else going on in the books was that the girl Bradley doesn't like is going to have a party and was going to in vite Bradley but when she found out about how Bradley and Jeff were not friends she was relieved because she didn't have to invite him.In the first place she ju st wanted to invite Jeff but she was going to invite Bradley was because that wa s the only way she could get Jeff to come. The reason she wants Jeff to come is b ecause she likes him and wanted him to come so they can like go out or something after the party. What i read afew days ago was that when Bradley was about to go he went up to Jeff and telling him bye but hold up Bradley didn't know that Jef f wasn't his friend anymore so when Bradley went up to him he just looked at Bra dley and then those boys(Jeff's new friends)came up and said something like is t his nerd or something bothering you and then they were about to try to fight Bra dley or something like that but they didn't.Jeff said something like yeah and sa id something that was negative and walked away.(less) Like this review? yes Loading add a comment 100 Sofia Sep 19, 2008 Sofia rated it: 5 of 5 stars When Bradley Chalkers wants something, he always ends up having it."Theres a boy in the girls bathroom" is a book where Louis Sachar teaches you that everything in this world is possible. The next day at school everyone in class was l ooking at him while the teacher was trying to teach. When he went to the counsel ors office to see Miss Davis she asked what was wrong with him and he said he pu nched hisself in the eye. He said since he can't punch other people he punches h

He wanted to say no but he knew if he said yes they would thin k he's cool and ask him to play basketball with them. so he said yes and they bo ught it. That's when it all started to change. At lunch he sat with the other bo ys instead of Bradley. At recess he was playing basketball with the other boys a nd Bradley was sitting by the wall watching them play. Bradley went to ask if he could play but they didn't let him because they thought he was mean still. Tamara Dec 30, 2009 Tamara rated it: 4 of 5 stars Read in December, 2009 This is a perfect read-aloud book, one I'd seen in classrooms for ages but never actually read until my co-teacher strongly suggested it. And she was right. Thi s was so great for deeper conversations with the class - especially with two rea l Bradleys in our room, one of whom was truly going through the monster portion of his year exactly when we got to that part of the book. This will probably be in my rotation for years.
