NICK COHEN/The Sun
Robots took over the gym at Seneca High School the weekend of March 22 as part of
the Mid-Atlantic Robotics district competition held at the school each year. Cherokee
was one of 40 schools from across Pennsylvania and New Jersey that competed in a
game of aerial assist in front of a raucous crowd of parents, students and robot en-
thusiasts from around the area.
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
If you were to pull into the parking
lot of Seneca High School over the
weekend of March 22, you may have
been surprised to find it packed with
cars and open spaces near the school at
a premium. As you entered the build-
ing, youd hear the sound of top 40
music playing, laughter and raucous
cheering. And when you made it to the
gymnasium, youd find its not high
school students competing but the ro-
bots those students built taking center
stage.
Welcome to the FIRST Mid-Atlantic
Robotics district competition.
MAR competitions closely resemble
the biggest high school sporting events
complete with cheering crowds, mas-
cots and banners. Each robot competes
in a three-team alliance against a sec-
ond similar alliance in a game that
changes every year.
Seneca played host to 40 schools from
across New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Four of the Lenape Regional High
School District schools, Cherokee,
Lenape, Shawnee and Seneca, as well as
Eastern Regional High School and
Moorestown High School, were among
those involved, as well as schools as far
away as York, Pa., and Wanaque.

The goal of FIRST, as well as
the competitions they hold, is to
inspire high school students to be
excited about careers in science,
technology, engineering and
mathematics as well as to give
them the tools they will need to
become leaders in these fields.
The students are given a new
game to play each year, and have
six weeks to design, build and
program the robot to be success-
ful on the competition field.
Most robots are about the size
of a small chest freezer. Each
team is given the same basic com-
ponents to build their robots, but
no blueprint is provided.
The result is a diverse collec-
tion of cleverly and uniquely
crafted machines.
What was this years game?
Aerial Assist, which involves the
robots throwing 25-inch diameter
balls into goals of varying point
values over a two-minute, 30-sec-
ond period.
Shamong Township resident
Robert Fraley attended the event
with his wife and kids. The
uniqueness of the event was a
draw for the Fraley family.
It was quite impressive and
lots of people attended, Fraley
said. The competition was pret-
ty cool, kids want to go back
again.
Each team has an electrical,
mechanical and software sub
team. The team also contains stu-
dents to work on areas such as
management, web design and
photography.
Students also speak and make
presentations to the companies
that sponsor them. Sponsors
range from local businesses to
major corporations such as Lock-
heed Martin and The Boeing
Company.

ing visits with the Easter Bunny
in April.
On Saturday, April 5 and April
12, and Sunday, April 13, from
noon until 3 p.m., families will be
able to visit with the Easter
Bunny at Maria's Mom's Marlton
bakery.
Each family sees the Easter
Bunny privately, and children re-
ceive a complimentary Easter
cookie. Parents are encouraged to
bring their cameras. Sensitive
visits with the Easter Bunny are
also available. Please call for a
reservation.
"Families really enjoyed visit-
ing with the Easter Bunny last
year, so we are inviting him
back, said Maria Ritter, owner of
Maria's Mom's. We like to pro-
vide fun experiences for our cus-
tomers.
Along with their Italian cook-
ies and pound cakes, the bakery is
featuring Ricotta cheesecake, rice
and meat pies, Easter bread and
other seasonal specialties.
After Ritters mother recovered
from breast cancer, the family de-
cided not to wait until the holi-
days to bake their traditional
cookies, but to make them year-
round.
The popularity of their cookies
led them to open the bakery in
2008, where all of Marias Moms
products are baked daily, using
fresh ingredients and no preserv-

The impact of the event goes
beyond just competing against
other high school students. It
may act as a glimpse into a poten-
tial career path for the competi-
tors.
Many students go on to col-
lege and pursue STEM careers.
These competitions are amazing,
and I guarantee that you have
never seen anything like this,
Seneca High School parent Kathy
Andjel said.
The students are assisted
in their endeavors by mentors
who help the students to grow
their technical knowledge,
self-confidence and leadership
skills.
What the teams pull off is re-
ally incredible to watch, and
what they learn is transferable to
college and in their career,
Voorhees resident and parent Je-
remy Cramer said.
Not just the technical skills
but to learn to work as a team, to
make a presentation for a compa-
ny. Its impressive.
At the end of the competition,
domo arigatos were handed out
to all Mr. Robotos on a weekend
well done as eyes turned to the
MAR Region Championship that
will be held April 10 at Lehigh
University.

T
he states of Colorado and
Washington legalized marijua-
na for recreational purposes in
2012. Could New Jersey be next?
State Sen. Nicholas Scutari is hop-
ing that it will. This week, he is sched-
uled to formally present a bill that
would legalize marijuana in the state
and tax it heavily. His bill would be
modeled after those in Washington
and Colorado, which earned $2 million
in the first month of sales last year.
Scutaris bill plans to tax and regu-
late marijuana much like alcohol, and
he estimates that New Jersey could
earn $100 million per year in revenue
from weed tax.
Anybody that looks at the facts
knows that the war on marijuana has
been a miserable failure, Scutari said
in a press release. Were not delusion-
al about how simple the effort would
be, but I think from a standpoint of
moving this state and this country for-
ward on its archaic drug laws, I think
its a step in the right direction.
From a purely financial perspective,
legalizing marijuana makes sense.
While $100 million may seem like an
inflated number, its probably not out
of the realm of possibility. New Jersey
had 2 million more residents than
Washington as of the 2010 Census and
3.7 million more than Colorado.
Much like alcohol consumption and
gambling, if people are going to par-
take in the practice of smoking mari-
juana, why not reap the benefits of
taxing the substance while at the
same time avoiding the cost of polic-
ing against it?
From an operational standpoint,
New Jersey has two other states to
model its plan after, plus many other
states in the U.S. that have decriminal-
ized the possession of marijuana for
recreational use. The Garden State has
also already legalized its use for med-
ical purposes.
People are also behind its legaliza-
tion. Lake Research Partners released
a poll last year that said 59 percent of
Jersey voters would support a bill
such as this, and an October Gallup
poll said 58 percent of Americans are
in favor of marijuana legalization.
But then, of course, comes the
curveball emotion, morality and ex-
ample.
Just because people do it doesnt
make it right. And just because states
can legalize and tax marijuana doesnt
mean they should.
What example does legalizing mari-
juana set for our children? How far
will we go just to make, or save, a
buck? Or are we just being too prudish
about this weed thing?
Puff, puff, pass ... on lower taxes?
Should New Jersey give green light to legal marijuana? Its an interesting case
Your thoughts
Should New Jersey legalize and tax
marijuana for recreational purposes? Or
would it be doing too much for the
almighty dollar? Share your thoughts

The Sun
At the March 27 meeting of the
Evesham Board of Education, Su-
perintendent John Scavelli gave
an update on the status of the dis-
tricts upcoming Teddy Bear
Academy daycare program.
As of today, there are 45 regis-
trations for the academy, and we
have 90 slots available so were
half full, Scavelli said. Some of
the children will begin in June on
June 30 and some will begin in
September.
He said the open house for the
program the district held on
March 15 was well attended by the
public. Parents have been partici-
pating in tours of the facility, and
the Evesham Child Care staff is
still receiving daily phone calls
and emails from interested par-
ents. A second open house is ten-
tatively scheduled for an un-
known time in May.
After talking about the publics
response to the academy, Scavelli
spoke about how the staffing and
construction of the academy was
progressing. Job descriptions
were included on the meetings
agenda, with the staff positions
posted the following day.
The district will conduct inter-
views for those positions through-
out April, with hiring accom-
plished by May and training
through June. District staff will
also engage in minor construction
over the following months.
Board member Lisa Mansfield
said she attended the open house
and looked at some finished
rooms.
They were so warm and invit-
ing for the children, Mansfield
said. It was nice to just stand
back and watch children who
were there test out different
rooms to get a feel for them. I see it
being a wonderful program.
At the meeting was also the
first reading for the 2014-15 school
district calendar. There are two
early dismissal days now pro-
posed as full school days on Dec.
23 and March 10, and Scavelli
spoke about decision not to list on
the calendar a specific order of
makeup dates in case of in-
clement weather next year.
At this point, our recommen-
dation would be to leave it as is
and that the dates will be made up
either at the end of the school
year or during spring break, and I
think given any year well have
to deal with the situation as we
know them.
Board member Sandy Student
asked about building snow days
into the calendar, but Scavelli said
starting in the 2012-2013 school
year as of negotiations with the
teachers union that an unofficial
agreement was reached to not
build in snow days.
Scavelli also gave a report on
the first round results of Reading
Recovery, the individualized early
intervention program for first-
grade students. It targets students
lagging behind their peers by
placing them with reading spe-
cialists. Of the 59 students placed,
44 students were able to discontin-
ue the program because of mak-
ing significant progress in read-
ing and writing.
The remaining students, al-
though having aged out of the
program, are still receiving sup-
port.
Scavelli also announced that
the 2014-2015 Evesham school
budget public hearing would be
held on Tuesday May 6, at 6 p.m.
in the all-purpose room at DeMasi
Middle School. He said informa-
tion about the budget is available
on the district website.

Mayor: Disrepair of plaza
cause of empty spaces
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Kobe Grill Sushi and Seafood
Buffet opened its doors on Route
70 East in the Tri-Towne Plaza
early last year. It abruptly closed
those doors early last month.
The restaurants website, still
active, continues to list a banner
advertising its Grand Opening
and describing the establish-
ments Great Place, Great Selec-
tion, Great Price.
Its to be seen whether Kobe
stands by the Great Place de-
scription, as Evesham Mayor
Randy Brown said that when the
restaurant closed, it did so by
packing up and leaving
overnight, failing to even notify
the township.
Brown said for months, Kobe
had been complaining about a
leaky roof to Tri-Towne Plaza
owner and manager Evesham
Owner L.L.C., an affiliate of RD
Management in New York.
Its business 101, Brown said.
If you want Class-A tenants, you
have to have a Class-A facility.
With Kobe gone, the nearly
180,000-square-foot strip mall and
shopping center is almost vacant.
Aside from a single martial arts
studio and a seasonal H&R Block
occupant, no businesses remain
in the plaza.
The two biggest spaces within
the property include a former
Sears department store that
closed several years ago and a for-
mer SuperFresh supermarket
that closed early last year. Brown
has said he believes the Super-
Fresh, like Kobe Grill, also closed
because of RD Managements
failure to properly maintain the
buildings.
There is obviously a direct
correlation between how the
property is managed and the state
of disrepair its in and why they
cant keep a client or get new
clients, Brown said.
Lawyer for Kobe Grill, Don
Benedetto of the Bahuriak Law
Group in Philadelphia, declined
to comment at this time.
Kobes closure is just the
newest chapter in Eveshams his-
tory of dealing with the aging
Tri-Towne plaza.
At the end of 2012, council au-
thorized the planning board to
start looking into several proper-
ties throughout Evesham to be in-
cluded in a redevelopment and re-
habilitation plan. In July 2013,
council accepted the zoning
boards recommended plan,
which included Tri-Towne Plaza
as an area marked for redevelop-
ment.
Following Kobes closure, coun-
cil moved at its March 18 meeting
to introduce an ordinance reaf-
firming the townships desire to
continue pursuing means by
which redevelopment properties
could be privately redeveloped,
but which also reaffirmed the
townships right to authorize the
acquisition of properties located
within the township redevelop-
ment area if necessary.
RD Managements lawyers
have previously tried to remove
Tri-Towne Plaza from the town-
ships redevelopment plan but
were unsuccessful.
RD Managements lawyers de-
clined to comment.
Brown said he assumes RD
Management is now talking to
other private owners to sell the
property once they find out the
market value, but the use of emi-
nent domain was also a possibili-
ty, albeit in the future.
Were waiting for the ap-
praisals to come in, Brown said.
Once the appraisals come in,
well have to begin a negotiation
with RD Management.
Township solicitor John Gille-
spie said the township is also in
litigation with RD Management
concerning whether the 2013 re-
development ordinance governs
what businesses RD Management
can build in Tri-Towne Plaza, or if
the property still falls under an
older ordinance from 2010 that
provides a different framework
for the development of commer-
cial properties in the area.
Gillespie said RD Management
brought forth plans for a child-
care center, but it was the town-
ships belief that a childcare cen-
ter wouldnt bring people into the
plaza long enough to do any shop-
ping or business.
A childcare center doesnt ad-
vance the commercial nature of
that site, Gillespie said. They
dont advance the idea of that site
as a commercial mixed-use cen-
ter.
Gillespie said he sees three
general outcomes regarding the
Tri-Towne Plaza property.
Option one is for RD Manage-
ment to provide the council and
zoning board with detailed plans
that cause the township to accept
that RD Management has realis-
tic goals for advancing the com-
mercial nature of the property.
Option two is for the appraisals
to come back and for RD Manage-
ment to agree with the assess-
ment but move toward selling the
property to another private devel-
oper who would then assume re-
sponsibility for redeveloping the
property.
Option three is for the ap-
praisals to come back and for RD
Management to disagree with the
assessment, in which case the
township could potentially use
the power of eminent domain to
acquire the property and find a
new redeveloper.
Whether or not we move for-
ward with acquisition, that re-
mains to be seen, Gillespie said.
