Smarter Versus Stricter Gun Laws Supreme Court made a decision that redefined the Second Amendment in 2008 stating for the first time that it protects a responsible, law-abiding citizens right to possess an operable handgun in the home for self-defense. However, the Court also made it clear that the Amendment protects only a limited right and does not protect a right to keep and carry any weapon. Stricter handgun laws would prevent crimes, for example data has shown with stricter laws there was a drop in violent crimes accord to recent study published in the Southern Medical Journal. A responsible gun owner has the opportunity to lead friends and family members by example. Smarter gun laws would restrict gun owners who are not responsible with their weapons. An unsecured gun can empower a criminal to steal. Re-enforcing gun laws should be an in-depth criminal and mental health background check, the largest gap in the federal background check requirement is that unlicensed, private sellers are not required to conduct background checks. As a result, convicted felons and other ineligible people are able to easily buy guns in

Smarter gun laws should require every year safety courses, every two months a skill test, a minimum age requirement of 30, longer application process and some form of gun insurance. This will reduce the number of prohibited purchasers from getting access to guns. Gun Control Law was sign by President Lyndon Johnson that regulates the firearms industry. The Firearm Owners Protection Act, this law was design to protect firearm owners' constitutional rights, civil liberties, and rights to privacy. In conclusion, smarter and stricter gun laws will reduce deaths from mass shooting, accidental gun deaths, and keep guns out of criminals hands. Gun owners need to be more responsible.
