PROJECT for End-of-Year Exhibition in GEOMETRY 2014 MY FIRST ANAMORPHIC DRAWING of A COMPLEX IMPOSSIBLE SHAPE MATERIALS: These are

re helpful to complete the drawing process for this project. one sheet of white poster board with matt finish not glossy finish an optional larger projection surface could be a large foam core board DEADLINE #2 one laminate transparency (optional) one Vis-a-Vis marker to draw the picture onto the transparency that you want to project scotch tape to tape transparency to the glass a picture frame with the glass secured in the frame DEADLINE #2 a box (or other means) to prop the picture frame up vertically to the table DEADLINE #2 at least one sharpened pencil DEADLINE #2 a good eraser DEADLINE #2 a yard stick a 12 inch ruler DEADLINE #2 a laser pointer (optional) DEADLINE #2 at least one other person to work with a sharpie marker to outline the final drawing colored pencils, or pastels for shading FIRST: I started with the following shape that I drew with pencil on paper. SECOND: I traced the shape onto a clear laminate transparency and taped that to the glass of an 8x10 picture frame. I used a sheet protector as my laminate transparency. If you choose you may copy your image directly on the glass and not use a transparency. I positioned the frame in a box so that it would stand up straight (perpendicular to the table top) as shown in the pictures. THIRD: I placed one sheet of white poster board (matt finish side up, glossy side down) on the table in a position so that when I closed one eye to view the shape on the glass, the projection of the shape onto the poster board was enclosed within the area of the poster board. The shape must project completely onto the poster board; no part of the shape can project beyond the poster board edges. An option is to use a larger piece of foam core board and place it on the floor with your picture on the glass set on a table. This would be more along the lines of the chalk drawing artists. Talk to Cathy for more details. FOURTH: At least one other partner is needed to mark key points of the projection onto the poster board!!! Closing one eye, and looking through the glass, verbally explain to your partner where to plot key points of the

shape as you view the shapes projection onto the poster board. It may be helpful to use a laser pointer to indicate the location of the projection points onto the poster board for your partner to mark. I did not have a laser pointer at the time I drew this anamorphic image.

SPECIAL NOTE: When plotting additional points always make sure the location from which you view the projection maintains the same projection of the key points that have previously been marked. FIFTH: Once your drawing is complete, outline the drawing cleanly with a sharpie marker. Erase all pencil lines and stray markings to make your image clean and well defined. SIXTH: Color and/or shade the drawing to enhance the 3-D projection image using charcoal pencil, pastels or colored pencils. FINALLY: The drawing created from this projection will only appear in the correct 3-D perspective from one location. If you view the resulting drawing from a different location it will look distorted as shown in these two photos. Below: from the side, with the projection from the left. At right: from the opposite side of the projection, upside down.

Now it is your turn

1) Choose a partner. 2) Choose one of the following as long as the image is a 3-D perspective an impossible shape an optical illusion another 3-D image A recommendation for you: Keep the drawing simple, but interesting for you. Images with straight lines will be easier than images with arcs and curves, but you may choose any image you like. 3) Get your image APPROVED by Cathy BEFORE you begin any projection drawing !!! See calendar deadline. For other ideas: CHECK OUT Andrew Gloags web page of his High Tech High Students Anamorphic Art http://dp.hightechhigh.org/~ajgloag/anamorphic_art/anamorphic.html 3) Collect your materials: I have Vis--vis markers that you may use during class time. You may NOT take them home. You and your partner must collect all other materials. See calendar deadline 4) Choose roles: one person to plot the points and one person to close one eye, view the projection and tell your partner where to plot key points. Then follow the steps above to complete your ANAMORPHIC ART WORK. 5) You will have 5 class periods to complete the drawing process. Use your time wisely. If you need more time, then plan on working outside of class with your partner after school or at home. ******* You must adhere to the calendar deadlines for this project.
