CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION PROJECT COMMUNICATION OFFICER Post Title: Climate Change Adaptation Project Communication Officer

Organizational Unit: University of Dar es Salaam, Centre for Climate Change Studies (CCCS) Duty Station: Dar es Salaam and Project Sites in Tanzania and Kenya Duration of Assignment: Two years, renewable Starting Date: 1st May 2014 Background The Centre for Climate Change Studies (CCCS) located at the-University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research Centre for dealing with matters of climate change related issues. These matters range from training, innovative research and.out-reach programmes. The Centre addresses these pertinent issues through collaborations with local and international partners. Research in Climate Change Adaptation issues is among the key focus areas of CCCS activities. The CCCS is looking for a Tanzanian national for the position of Climate Change Adaptation Project Communication Officer to work with the CARIAA PRISE Project Team. The successful candidate will be based in Dar es Salaam with travel required to project sites. This research project aims to catalyze inclusive climate resilient development in African and Asian semi-arid lands (SALs). Lessons will be drawn from six core countries: Burkina, Faso, Kenya, Pakistan, Senegal, Tajikistan and Tanzania. These countries all have large, economically crucial semi-arid lands, where water scarcity shapes ecosystems and social and economic opportunities. Main Responsibilities The holder of this position is responsible for the communications of the CARIAA - Pathways to Resilience in Semi-Arid Economies (PRISE) funded Climate Change Adaptation Project. The purpose of this role is to enhance the impact of the PRISE's research on development policy and practice, and PRISE's reputation and image through efficient and effective external and internal communications. Activities to be performed will include but are not limited to: Assist in the overall implementation of project activities, and develop project Communication Strategy and Stakeholder Engagement Strategy. Preparation of communication materials and facilitation of stakeholder discussion forums. 1

Build local government and partners' capacity and stakeholder engagement sessions and report. Work with the PRISE Communications Officer and Consortium Coordinator to develop and maintain a communications strategy for the consortium to enhance the impact of its research on policy and practice and reputation, profile and image. Drafting communications materials and preparing a range of publications (including editing, proof reading, formatting, working with designers, selecting and formatting pictures). Anticipating and arranging policy engagement events.

Monitoring and evaluating programme communication activities, creating an agenda and coordinating it in consultations with consortium members. Identifying and managing other communications support as necessary.

Other Duties In liaison with the PRISE Communications Officer, providing information about PRISE's work in response to media enquiries and general requests from visitors, by telephone or e-mail. In association with the support team, preparing printed communication materials including internal programme reports, external reports, opinion pieces and briefing papers, executive summaries, and other electronic and hard copy materials which further the communications needs of the group. Assisting with the preparation of communications strategies. Participating in PRISE communications meetings and other coordination processes as required. Qualifications and Experience A Post-graduate University degree in a related subject, e.g., Environment, Economics, Community development, or Public Relations specializing in Development Communications. Good understanding of climate change and related environmental issues, especially climate change issues would be an added advantage. Experience in the development of communication strategies to raise awareness of climate and related issues would be an asset. Experience of community awareness raising, climate change adaptation. Good knowledge of economic/development policies nationally and international and policy analysis and linkages with environmental issues. Experience of working with government, local government partners (locally and internationally). Good communication skills and a positive attitude to team work. Fluent in spoken and written English. Excellent writing and editing skills. Skills and Abilities Organizing workshops, campaigns and events. Demonstrated capabilities in developing and disseminating communication materials. Ability to communicate and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders. 2

Duration of the Assignment:

Attractive remuneration will depend on level of entry and qualifications.
