St Mary of Egypt
St Mary of Egypt was a Desert Ascetic who Repented of a life of prostitution and immorality. She lived during the sixth century, and passed away in a remarkable manner in 522. The Holy Church celebrates her Feast Day on the day of her Repose in Christ 1 April 5. We also Commemorate St Mary of Egypt on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent the Sunday of St Mary of Egypt. Our Venerable Holy Mother spent her pubescent years as a promiscuous young woman who was enslaved to the passions of the flesh. At the tender age of twelve she had run away from her pagan parents going to the great city of Alexandria where she survived as a harlot for the next seventeen years, refusing money from the men with whom she freely copulated, and living by taking advantage of the kindness of strangers, begging and spinning flax. One day she met a group of young men who were pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem for the Veneration of the Life-giving Holy Cross of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. So she decided to accompany them, and immediately proceeded to seduce the young men as they journeyed towards the Holy City. However, when the group finally arrived at Jerusalem and made their way towards the Holy Church of the Resurrection where the Precious Cross was kept, she was prohibited from crossing the threshold by an invisible force. After three frustrated attempts to enter the Holy Church, she was forced to stand outside and, looking upwards in despair she beheld a beautiful Holy Icon of our Lady Theotokos of whom she had heard so much in the past few days. She began to weep as though her heart would break, and she prayed with all her might that the Ever Blessed Virgin might allow her to also see and venerate the True Cross of Her Son and Lord, promising that she would renounce all her worldly passions and go wherever the All Pure and Holy Mother might lead her. After her heartfelt Conversion before our Lady Theotokos, St Mary was able to enter the Holy Church and duly venerate the Life-giving Precious Cross of our Resurrected Lord and Saviour. Having thanked the Panagia for her Intercession, and having received enough money from a stranger for three small loaves of bread, St Mary of Egypt began her Ascetic Life in the wilderness alongside the Jordan River, where she endured the first seventeen years battling against the torments of the wild beasts of temptation and the desires of her flesh. ( She was Baptised and received her first Holy Communion at a Monastery along the banks of the Jordan River, before setting off to live in solitude.) Finally, after ceaseless Spiritual Struggle, she overcame all physical and Spiritual Obstacles and was comforted and guided by the Ever Blessed Theotokos in all circumstances. Having never received any education, St Mary was granted the Knowledge and Understanding of the Holy Scriptures by the Grace of God Who also bestowed upon her the Gift of Foresight and Perception After 47 years in solitude, she met St Zosimas, the Hieromonk, who persuaded her to tell him about her Life, which she then disclosed with profound Humility. Her Gift of Clairvoyance was evident when she addressed St Zosimas by name and revealed the fact that she knew who he was as well as various details of his Life despite never having met before. Before they parted company, St Mary of Egypt asked St Zosimas to meet her the following year, at sunset, on Holy Thursday on the banks of the Jordan River, and to bring her Holy Eucharist, of which she had not partaken for all those years since her Baptism. The following year, St Zosimas obeyed her request and suddenly, as the sun began to set, he watched in amazement as St Mary miraculously walked across the wide Jordan River and greeted him. Having received her long awaited Holy Eucharist, St Mary gave St Zosimas certain instructions regarding his Holy Monastery, and then returned to the opposite bank, once again walking over the water. A year later he found St Mary's body with a message written on the sand asking him for burial and revealing that she had died immediately after receiving the Holy Mysteries the year before (and thus had been miraculously transported to the spot where she now lay). 2

art supremely Blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him Who from Thee became Incarnate, Hades was taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned to return, and the Curse has been neutralised, and Eve has been liberated; Death has been put to death, and we have been brought to Life! Extolling, we cry out: O Christ our God, Thou art Blessed, for so was Thy Good Pleasure! > Glory to Thee! Dwelling
He established my feet on Rock and kept straight my steps . in the wilderness, Thou blotted out every image of the passions from Thy soul, having in their place instead printed on Thy soul the sublime Godlike Form of the Holy Virtues. And Thou shone forth to such an extent that Thou were able to fly across the waters, O Blessed One, and levitate above the ground when Thou raised Thy hands up to God in Prayer. Now, O Blessed Mother, All Glorious Mary: as Thou stand before our Master with confidence, importunely pray for us.
So St Zosimas tried to dig a suitable grave but was unable to make much progress in the sunbaked ground. Suddenly a huge lion appeared, gently licked the feet of St Mary of Egypt and then began to dig a deep grave for the Holy Ascetic. Needless to say, St Zosimas was terrified at first but when he realised what was happening, he calmed down and was able to inter St Marys Holy Relics with all due respect and veneration. When St Zosimas said the final Amen, the lion turned around and departed, and St Zosimas, likewise, returned to his Monastery, where he eventually related to his disciple, the full account of his meeting with St Mary of Egypt and her Life that she had related to him. On his return to the Monastery, St Zosimas fulfilled all that St Mary of Egypt had advised him with regard to the problems of the Monastery, which then improved the circumstances and the attitude of everyone concerned. St Zosimas remained for the rest of his life at the same Monastery, finally Reposing in Christ at the age of 100 years. Later the Life of St Mary of Egypt was written down by St Sophronios, the faithful disciple of St Zosimas, who was eventually elected Patriarch of Jerusalem. The Life of St Mary of Egypt is read in several sections in Great Lent, during the Great Canon of St Andrew, which profoundly expresses the desire for personal Repentance and Salvation. May we all make a concerted effort to renounce our worldly passions and Struggle against all our habitual temptations so that we too, may be Blessed with True Repentance and Eternal Salvation. http://orthodoxwiki.org/Mary_of_Egypt

Now
Kingdom of God is not food and drink, but Righteousness and Ascetic Practice, and Holiness; therefore rich men will never enter it, except those who place their treasures in the hands of the needy. This is what David the Prophet taught when he wrote: Righteous is the man who is Merciful day in and day out, who delights in the Lord. He walks in the Light; he will not stumble. All of which was written for our edification, so that, while Fasting, we do Acts of Kindness; and the Lord will grant us instead of earthly gifts the Things of Heaven.

Thee, O Mother, is preserved undistorted what was made in the Image of God; for taking up the Cross, Thou followed Christ and taught by Thy Example that we should overlook the flesh, since it passes away, and instead look after the soul, since it is Immortal. And therefore, O Devout Mary, Thy spirit rejoices with the Angels.
Angel, O Lord, proclaiming Thy Resurrection, filled the guards with fear, but he cried to the Women and said: Who do you seek the Living with the dead? Being God, He has Risen and given Life to the whole world!
