Stationery
Description: Personally designed business stationery with a (owl) logo that I created as well. Date: 03.01.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign and Illustrator Objectives: In Illustrator Design a new company logo. Create a stationery design to match business card. Use the tools in InDesign and Illustrator. Process: I first started in Illustrator using the pen tool to create my logo. I looked at images of owls online and tried to pull out the most prominent features of a baby owl. I then used the shape tool to first create the eyes and then used the pen tool to create the rest of the owl. I saved the logo on my personal flash drive and then opened a document in InDesign. I then placed my logo illustrator file into my InDesign document. In InDesign I placed my owl logo on the corner of this art board. I then created more branches on the top and bottom to create some repetition and balance to my design. I added a light water mark in the shape of a tree trunk in green at the right end of my document to add to the design of branches and trees.

Business Card
Description: Personally designed business card with a (owl) logo that I created as well. Date: 03.01.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign and Illustrator Objectives: In Illustrator Design a new company logo. Create business card design matching stationery layout. Use the tools in InDesign and Illustrator Process: Using the same personally designed logo from my Stationery/Business letterhead, I designed a business card. On my first page I created two rectangles 3.5x2 and started to design my business card, front and back. I used the pen tool to create branches. I created my color scheme and then added typography to apply my message. I used a decorative font for the title but made sure to use a clear sans serif font for the body information.

Montage
Description: An uplifting montage design using two images, using filter/colorization, masking and typography rules. Date: 02.14.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn Photoshop tools/filters and working with layers. Learn how to apply a smooth blending design with a mask. Use correct typography skills incorporated into photo design. Process: I found a colorful city picture online, under Google images City and cropped it in photo shop to 8.5 by 11. I raised the vibrancy and adjusted the levels to the image to create a brighter look. I brought in the girls face and put a mask on it. First taking away the hard edges of the image using 100% opacity on the black paint and then lowering the opacity and fading the image into the background. Using the Quick Selection Tool I selected the iris of her high. I then colorized just the selected shape, using a mask layer, and made the color of it a deeper blue. I raised the brightness on the whole image so there wasnt as much darkness and shadow when it printed, since it always prints darker than seen on a computer monitor. I added text and for the main focus words I used the stamp tool, creating repetition, and painted the water behind the main words. So, it would show the water reflection on the words. I then finished off by added a slight drop shadow to all my text so it would stand out more behind the colorful background.

Baby Cakes- Cupcake Shop

Logos
Description: Three different ideas for a cupcake shop logo called: Baby Cakes. Date: 02.21.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Design and completely individually create 3 logos for a company. Learn how to use the basic tools in Illustrator. Process: Using Adobe Illustrator I created these three logos. I first started by looking at different cupcakes images online. Then, for each cupcake design, I used the pen tool to draw the cupcake. For the first one it was really simple only using the pen tool, a square shape and a typography font. The second one was created using the ellipse tool and the pen tool. I created the whole cupcake, besides the cherry, using the pen tool. Then, the third logo I used typography skills, the pen tool and the ellipse tool. This third logo took the longest with the pen tool. It took a lot of work using the white arrow tool to adjust the anchor points and the handle bars. I also used the plus and minus pen tool to take away and add points so I could create a back and forth curved line that looked like the outline shape of a cupcake. I really enjoyed illustrator and realized the potential it brings to designing with the tools that it provides.

Brochure
Description: A two-sided gate-line cruise brochure. Date: 03.29.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Objectives: Create a double-sided designed brochure. Learn how to clip an image in Photoshop and wrap text around it in InDesign. Create and use paragraph styles in InDesign. Process: I first set up the folds and margin lines in InDesign. I created a 16.5 in. by 5.5 in. two page layout and put margin sizes at .25 inches, with fold lines to create a gate line brochure. I used images online that went along with each sub-heading and that flowed well together with the content. I created the body text and put each paragraph in a line space paragraph style, by creating a paragraph style on InDesign. Then I arranged the images on the page. For one of the images I put it into Photoshop, using a mask and the quick selection tool I cut out the people from the background image. I then placed this image into InDesign and clicked on the text wrap feature and made the text next to it wrap around the side of the image shape. To created unity and repetition I added in lines on the front top and bottom and inside top and bottom using two of my colors, red and teal. I brought out the colors from the cruise ship image on the front using the eye-dropper tool in InDesign. For my Soleil logo used the pen tool in Illustrator. Then, I used the white arrow tool to adjust the anchor points to make it look like a sun with a boat.

Webpage
Description: A webpage I designed to show my logo and how I created it. Date: 03.15.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Text Wrangler and Adobe Illustrator. Objectives: Place an original logo as a .png into a web page. Write content to explain the process of creating the logo. Design the entire webpage using HTML and CSS. Process: I created this webpage by using Text Wrangler. I used a pre-made CSS and created an HTML format, and inserted my logo image file name into the HTML. I then inserted the CSS into the HTML so it would be linked. I added text showing my rationale for making my logo. I used the CSS file linked to the HTML and change the fonts, colors, and padding. I changed the H1 and body typography to Trebuchet MS font and put Helvetica and sans serif for the options texts to use. I opened my logo in Illustrator and found the hex # and copied the number into my CSS so I could bring some design elements into my web page. For example, I matched the gray in my logo to the boarder of the body and the background color of the H1. I created a small pink and white strip square in Illustrator and brought that image into my HTML section of the CSS file. I repeated this image, to create the pink and white striped background. I added a comment about the background-image in my CSS to remind me that this file was the pink and white stripe background. I changed the padding on my logo so I wouldnt have any tangent issues.

Event Ad
Description: Using Microsoft Word and scanner created a full bleed ever advertisement for a 5K to help fundraising for the fight for cancer. Date: 02.01.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word Epson Scanner pdf2jpg.net (PDF converter) Objectives: Scan a high-quality image into the computer. Design a full bleed flier. Insert image into word and edit image for the flier. Use word to design the entire flier. Process: I added an image of a man running, found in the Runners World magazine, and sized it to fit the whole size of the paper. I cropped the top and bottom to create a focus on the action of his legs. I added shapes and complementary coloring in Microsoft Word and content to advertise the 5K event. I choose one font for the whole advertisement, but used different weights to show hierarchy.

Photo Design
Description: Showing simple editing after using good photography techniques. Used an appropriate color scheme by pulling out the colors shades in the image. Date: 02.08.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerry Program(s)/Tools: Photoshop Objectives: Learn basics about photography and download personally taken images. Adjust the levels, brightness, contrast and hue of the image in Photoshop. Design entire layout and photography in Photoshop. Pull out colors from the image and show the color scheme clearly in the design. Process: I first decided on the colors I wanted, but then ended up tweaking their shades when editing the photo. Instead of just a green and red complementary color scheme I changed it to a teal, orange and red split complementary color scheme. I took a picture of these flowers next to a window using natural lighting instead of the yellow neon lights in the room. I uploaded the image into photo shop and adding some vibrancy and enhancement of the red and teal colors. I edited out some black markings that stood out too much in the background by using the stamp tool. I then created different size rectangles using my color scheme for the background. To break it up I added a curved white line against my image, using the pen tool. To use some repetition, again using the pen tool, I created leaf like, rounded shapes to show the color scheme and add some design to the other side of the piece.

Flier
Description: Gray scale flier advertising Vouant Communications Graduate Leadership Conference. Date: 01.25.14 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 - 03 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign Objectives: Make a project folder and place images and design in the folder to keep them linked. Apply beginning design principles and typography rules. Learn basic InDesign tools. Process: I began by creating many (12) different sketches for the layout of the flier. Then, in Adobe InDesign I created my first draft using my favorite sketch layout. After creating my first design I started all over again. I want to create some circle shapes to create some more flow and diversity in my design. I created three circle shapes with the pen tool. I created another circular shape in the biggest circle and placed my image from my project folder into the shape, using the pen tool. I then, using typography rules, created my title. I used sizing and spacing to make Leadership Conference tie into Graduate, using proximity principles. I then added the rest of my content and used text wraps around my circles to make the text flow with the design shapes. I then changed the circles to a lighter shade of gray with the opacity percentage, to make the circle shapes stand out.
