Additional equation not on sheet you need to know
F applied = F friction + F net (Horizontal Movement)
When an object is braking, the Friction force is the Net Force.
When an object moves at a constant speed, F net = 0, F applied = F friction
F applied = W + F net (Vertical Movement)
F applied is the Horizontal component of the force (F x) when an object is pulled at an
angle.
When an object is pulled, F normal = W – F (y)
2. When you jump from the surface of the earth, the force of attraction between the
earth
and your body gives you a constant acceleration of 10m/s/s. If your mass is 65 kg, and
the mass of the earth is 6x1024 kg, do you really pull up just as hard on the earth as it
pulls down on you ? Why don’t we notice the earth falling up towards you?
3. A force of 20 N moves a 10 kg block of concrete along at constant speed. What is the
coefficient of friction between the block and the surface ?
4. Driving down the road at a speed of 25 m/s the driver of a Dodge minivan slams on
the brakes to avoid a squirrel. If the force applied by the brakes is 5,000 N, and the mass
of the van is 1675 kg, what length of time will be required to stop the van, and how far
will it go while stopping ?
5. A helicopter having a mass of 20,000 kg produces an upward force of 210,000 N
against the air. Will the helicopter rise, fall, or hover ? If you think the copter will
accelerate, find its rate of acceleration.
6. Dumbo the flying elephant approaches a landing strip with a speed of 20 m/s. If his
feet produce a coefficient of friction of 0.75 with the dirt, and his mass is 750 kg, how
many seconds does it take him to stop ? How far will he have traveled in this time?
7. One fine day in the city of Gotham, youthful ward Dick Grayson bounds down the
steps of his home just in time for lunch. Aunt Harriet, who is just bringing in the
groceries, asks for some help. Cheerfully, Dick picks up the brown paper bag
containing 2 gallons of milk from rest with a uniform acceleration of 5 m/s2. If the
milk jugs have a total mass of 7.5 kg and the bursting strength of the paper bag is 100 N,
is Dick being a bit overexuberant, or is everything OK ?
9. A man now pushes a 500 N object across a horizontal surface using a 200
N force applied at a 35° angle. What is the normal force? If the object is pulled
with an acceleration of 1.8 m/s2, what is the coefficient of friction?
