The Joseph boys basketball team went on a roll in the district playoffs last weekend and ended up in third place, propelling themselves into the state playoffs. The Eagles first beat Cove 58-43, Thursday, Feb. 21. On

Friday they lost to Powder Valley 87-48, and on Saturday the boys finished off Pine Eagle 77-56, for the third place spot. Joseph vs. Cove Joseph Coach Olan Fulfer said, The game was a lot closer than the final score showed. It was a battle back and forth for the lead until the

final quarter. We were only up by 2 at the half. At the end of the third period one of Coves best players fouled out and we put the full-court press on them. We kept changing up our defense up and Cove couldnt adjust, Fulfer said. Cayden DeLury was the leading scorer for the Eagles

in this game with 22. Sam Beckman was next with 13, hitting 2 of 3 from three-point DeLury land. Ben Smallen scored 9 with 6 rebounds, Blair Beaudion 8,

Wil Story 5, with 3 rebounds. Noah DeLury and Aaron Borgerding each scored 4. Joseph vs. Powder Valley There were no stats available for this game but coach Fulfer said, We played them a lot better than we did last time. The boys played all-out in the beginning of the game. Powder Valley played their

starters until the final three minutes and we starting subbing early. I was proud of the kids who came off the bench and played respectable. We tried different lineups and also practiced new plays in this game. Joseph had 42 turnovers in the game. See JOSEPH, Page B2

ENT/JOS SENDS FOUR TO PORTLAND

The Joseph E-Gals went into last weeks Old Oregon League district tournament in fourth place in the league and finished fourth in the tournament, just out of state playoff contention, after winning one game and losing two. The Jo-Hi girls beat the Wallowa Cougars 35-22 in their Thursday, Feb. 20, opener, and then lost to the first place Imbler Panthers, 26-47, Friday and then to the Cove Leopards, 42-52, Saturday. Joseph and Cove received the Sportsmanship Award at the tournament. E-Gals named to the tournaments second team all-stars were senior Breeanna Gibson and sophomore Satori Albee. Gibson also made the all-league second team, while Hailee McClure and Sidney Cooney received honorable mention. Though he was disappointed his girls didnt win one more game in the tournament, Im satisfied with how far weve come as a team compared with the last couple of years, Joseph Coach Larry Wells said. He added that with the quality of the younger players coming up, he looks forward to next season. Joseph vs Wallowa This was probably our best defensive game of the year, Wells said about the district win over the Cougars. The game started out slow and close, though Joseph led the whole way: 7-5 after the first quarter, 16-11 at halftime, 2419 after the third. Joseph was able to put 11 points and the game away in the final quarter, when Wallowa put in only 3 points. Looking to next season without his five senior players, Wells said he was especially happy to see sophomore Albee step it up and score 12, including 6 in the final stanza. She was also the teams leading rebounder, with 10. She had a great tournament, Wells said. Senior Breeanna Gibson tied Albee for high scorer with 12, while senior Hailee McClure bagged 7 and senior See GIRLS, Page B2

By virtue of placing either first or second at the 11-team 2A/1A Special District 4 Wrestling Tournament held in Elgin last Saturday, four Enterprise/Joseph grapplers will compete in the state wrestling match Feb. 28 and March 1 in Portland. Returning to the state tournament from last year will be seniors Matthew Staigle (195 lbs.) and Wyatt Warnock (220 lbs.). New faces this year at state will belong to senior Daniel Parker (170 lbs.) and junior Jared Wilcox (160 lbs.) As a team, Ent/Jos claimed second place in the 11-team district matfest. One Ent/Jos wrestler who competed at state one year ago and placed out of the running with a third place finish at district last weekend was Kyle Roepke, who competed in the 152-lb. weight class. Although Ent/Jos 170 lb. wrestler Daniel Parker, on top, lost this championship match to Unions Chad Witty by a 4-1 decision, Parker still advanced to the state tournament this weekend in Portland.

cruised through the district meet in Elgin Saturday by recording three successive pins. Of those three wins, only in one of them did an opponent survive into the second round. Warnock, third at state last year at 220-lbs., had a tougher go in this

years district finale. Tied 2-2 entering the third round where he started in the down position, Warnock recorded an escape and a take-down in the final two minutes to claim the title via a 5-2 decision over Cranes Michael Casey. Another

Enterprise/Joseph mat man, Tristan Morehouse, claimed third place in that same 220-lb. division by, after being pinned by Casey, planting the shoulders of Grant Unions Charlie Wolf on the mat in the second round of their third place match. A third-round pin of Tyler Tandy of Imbler vaulted Wilcox to the title at 160-lbs. Wilcox, whose season record now stands at 33-12, suffered most of his losses early in the season and has been getting stronger as the season progresses. He reached the finals by recording another pin and a 9-3 decision. The closest thing to a surprise for the Jed Stone-coached Ent/Jos team had to have been supplied by Parker, whose season record is 19-21. Wrestling extremely well in the eyes of Coach Stone, Parker recorded a pin against a wrestler from Union, won a tough 5-3 decision over Hunter Davis of Crane in semifinal action, and then against one of the premier 2A/1A 170 lb. wrestlers in the state, Chad Witty of Union only lost by a 4-1 decision.
