submitted by: Courtney Donnelly

In this lesson, I will help build the students research skills by having them work in groups to learn more about Nevadas history. The students will not only use textbooks but also the internet to learn about Nevadas state bird, flower, slogan, state seal, etc. C. Basic Information: Grade Level: 4th Time to Complete this Lesson: 50 minutes Groupings: groups of four

D. Materials: Nevada textbooks Computers Paper & pencils Nevada worksheets E. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o
H2.4.5 Explain the symbols, mottos, and slogans related to Nevada, i.e., "Battle Born," the state seal, and "Silver State."

Student-Friendly Standards I can explain different fun facts about the state of Nevadas history.

F. Vocabulary Motto a word pr idea expressing the spirit of something or someone. Slogan a memorable phrase silver state Nevadas slogan symbol something used to explain something else.

G. Procedure: 1. Start off reviewing what the vocabulary words of the week are (motto, slogan, silver state, symbol) 2. Break the students up in groups of four and give them all one idea to search (Nevadas slogan, motto, state symbol, state bird, etc). 3. Give the students books to search through or have them search for information on the internet to give back ground information on the topic they were given.

4. Have the students work in their groups to get as much information as possible so that they can present their findings to the class. 5. After 30 minutes of research, the next 15 will be used to have the students present their findings in whatever way they want. (ie. Just speaking, poster board, powerpoint, song, story). H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the students presentation to see if they understood what I was expecting of them. When I give them an idea to research, I want to make sure they are finding the greatest chunk of the idea along with being able to research effectively. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Just by seeing/hearing their presentation, I will be able to see if the students are understanding the different facts of Nevadas history. I also will look at the way the students are building their research skills by how quickly and effectively they are coming up with their information using both the computer and textbooks. I. Closure: Have a few students talk about a fun fact that they learned about Nevadas history. Ill also ask the students if their prefer research from a textbook or computer.

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think since this would be an end of the week lesson, the easiest part is going over the vocabulary words again since Ive taught them to the students for the past couple days. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The hardest part to teach for me is going to be trying to get the students to just stick to one idea since they might read into something else that they find interesting. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I see myself having the students add all their information into one big bulletin board in the classroom since it is about the state that they live in. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students that are having trouble with research, I can have them work with another student that is good at finding information that they need quick. If they still dont understand then I can work with them alone at another time while the other students are working. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I might need to change what I am having the students do since they might not have enough time. I might want to just use the worksheet with the vocabulary on it to get them to look up the definitions with research. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part for me is finding the right standard. I am waiting for the day where that idea gets a lot easier. 7. Explain the strategy from Integrating Language Arts & Social Studies that you included in this lesson plan. I integrated the strategy of building research skills by having the students look up answers using a textbook and computer. It helps students realize how quickly one research tool can be to another.
