PLAYS AND DRAMA FOR YOUNG LEARNERS [PLAYSCRIPT] LGA3104

Justification of The Story Chosen (Hansel & Gretel) In selecting a story to adapt it into a play, we have chosen the story of Hansel and Gretel. This story is about a young brother and sister who were lost in the forest after being chased away by their stepmother. On the way, they found a bread house and with sugar windows and because of hunger they started to eat the house. Unfortunately the house belongs to a wicked witch and they get caught while eating the house. However the children managed to save their lives by outwitting the witch. However, we have adapted this story into a new version so that we are able to focus on the aspects of cognitive, social, aesthetic and moral dimensions. Some new characters were added and the plot also has been changed. We also focus on the new character as the main character which is Pak Pandir instead of using Hansel and Gretel. First of all, the adapted version is focused on the cognitive aspect. Cognitive is the activity of knowing: the acquisition, organization, and use of knowledge.(Ulrich Neisser, Cognition and Reality, 1976, p.1). At the age of 7-10 pupils are very active in thinking and analyzing what they see and hear. So we include the different characters and incidents to make the pupils think creatively. For example, they will ask the question of What will I do if I meet a monster? What will I do if I lose my loved ones?. Other than that, pupils will also look at the twisted character which is Pak Pandir who is very nice to his children but arrogant to the others. This will confuse the pupils on how a person can have the positive and negative sides at the same time and the pupil will start questioning the teacher about the conflicts in the story which is actually a good respond in the lesson. Besides that, the teacher also can use the conflicts to trigger the pupils to think outside of the box. For example, how should Pak Pandir reacts if he meets the giant. The next one is the aspect is of social. Hansel and Gretel is a foreign story. We changed the names of the characters in the play to the Malaysian names so that it is easier for the pupils to pronounce and imagine the characters. We try to instill the Malaysian social background or settings in order to make the pupils understand the story and the plot easier. This is because if we use the local settings, the pupils are able to imagine where the plots are happening. For example, in the adaptation script we will use the jungle, the village and the river that we can see anywhere in Malaysia. So when the teacher explains about the story to the pupils, they are able to imagine their own settings about the story. The adapted version also integrates verbal and non-verbal interaction as the pupils need to act out the story line with the correct gestures. This will train them on how to express themselves and ideas using acting. Other than that social scopes can be instilled by letting the pupils interact during the play. Each of them will be given different characters and dialogues in simple

PLAYS AND DRAMA FOR YOUNG LEARNERS [PLAYSCRIPT] LGA3104

sentences so that they can perform the play. Indirectly they are interacting with each other and this will increase the level of social and interaction among the pupils besides learning English in a fun way. For aesthetic value, the real Hansel and Gretel story develops the value by using the enjoyable settings and characters such as the bread house and the witch. Aesthetic means perception in Greek (Schirrmarcher, 1998). In the adapted version, we try to increase the aesthetic value among the pupils who read and perform the script by adding well-known characters so that they will feel the script is fun and becomes excited to perform. Other than that, the characters in the adapted version help the pupils to express themselves in their own way. For example, there are the characters of Badang and Doraemon. The pupils can choose which characters they want to be and do their performance in their own way. This makes the pupils enjoy the play and feel appreciated because they are free and flexible to be themselves in the play. If the pupils enjoy the performance, this will make their confidence level increase and the next time they will feel excited whenever it is time to perform a play. In the real story of Hansel and Gretel the moral values embedded include the lesson that we should not be cruel to the children and we have to be clever to save our life. In our play the moral value which is clearer and meaningful to the pupils. The additional moral value in our script is the first one, do not be arrogant. As we can see in the script, Pak Pandir really likes to show off to the people he meets on the road even though he himself is facing a problem. Other than that, the moral value is we should appreciate each others ability and not looking down on them because people cannot do everything and being special is a bonus. So this adapted play will instill the values of appreciating each other ability among the pupils. Furthermore, this moral value also motivates the pupils who are having low selfesteem to boost themselves by appreciating their own ability in real life. In conclusion, Hansel and Gretel is a suitable story to be adapted into a play. This is because it is not just the characters in the story but also the plot that is able to attract the pupils easier to explore the story. The adapted version is also suitable for the Year 2 and Year 3 pupils because of the simple sentences in the dialogue and also the plot which is easy to be understood.
