SILICONES FOR MOLDMAKING APPLICATIONS

Co-star with Rhodorsil RTV-2 for your best casting performance

Silicone elastomers are one of several materials used to produce molds, together with polyurethane elastomers, plasters, alginates and latex.

These elastomers have enabled new molding techniques to be developed (e.g. very flexible glove molds) and also the molding of very aggressive reproduction resins (polyurethanes, polyester, epoxies, etc.). Access to translucent and transparent grades together with the appropriate mechanical properties have also enabled the development of vacuum prototype molding. This type of application covers a very broad-ranging market, spanning from decorative molding to industrial molding. The Rhodorsil RTV-2 range was developed with this in mind, to meet all these requirements. Rhodorsil RTV-2 silicone elastomers have specific properties which provide users with many advantages.

Advantages of silicones

# Easy processing # Mold release capability # Highly accurate reproduction # Flexible molds # Good abrasion resistance

- For applications requiring high dimensional accuracy, choose a polyaddition RTV. - For the molding of deep-section parts with accentuated undercuts, choose a RTV combining both flexibility and mechanical strength. - For vertical imprints, use a specific silicone for impression coating techniques (thixotropic). - For sock-molding techniques choose a very soft RTV.

# National heritage conservation

This type of molding requires a specific approach in order to avoid damaging the model. Care should be taken on the compatibility of insulating products with the model (pore fillers, release coating). If the mold stays on the model for more than the recommended time (24 hours at 23C) no adhesion problems with the model will occur. These tests can be carried out on a non visible part of the model (e.g. the base) or a test sample.

Choosing the best suited product

- For fragile or hollow parts, it is recommended to use very flexible silicones. - For the color tansfer technique: dilute a RTV-2 with a silicone oil (with standard viscosity 50mPa.s) to adjust the hardness of the pad.

# Flexible (possible to adapt hardness to conform to irregular shapes) # Perfect transfer of inks to the surface # Silicone pads long life # Pads stability to storage
due to low surface tension and release properties of silicone
