EDUCATION PURDUE UNIVERSITY, Masters of Fine Arts Program Poetry May 2016 GPA N/A UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS, Johnston Center for Integrative Studies Creative Writing and the Classics December 2012 GPA 4.0 ACADEMIC AWARDS & HONORS WINNER, Quintilian Award for Excellence in Teaching, Introductory Composition at Purdue The Quintilian Award is given to the top ten percent of English instructors in the Introductory Composition program at Purdue, and is based on the instructors overall student evaluations and comments. WINNER, Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Association Graduate Scholarship The Alpha Association of Phi Beta Kappa awards a single graduating senior each school year with a sizable scholarship to study at a college or university of their choice. WINNER, Phi Beta Kappa Fortnightly Club Prize The local Fortnightly Club of Redlands awards a single student each school year with a cash prize for an outstanding essay in a research field of their choice. I was awarded the prize as a sophomore for my thesis-length paper in mathematics on Claudius Ptolemy and the Table of Chords. SCHOLAR, University of Redlands Proudian Interdisciplinary Honors Program The Proudian Program is the universitys only honors society and program for interdisciplinary study. In a rigorous application and interview process that takes place during a students sophomore year, twelve faculty-appointed candidates are chosen to represent their graduating class as Proudian scholars. Students participate in the program for the duration of their academic careers, receiving honors upon graduation with the production of a successful senior thesis. LIASON TO CREATIVE WRITING, Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society As a new member to the English departments Sigma Tau Delta Society I was nominated for the position of Liaison to Creative Writing, one that would allow me the opportunity to bridge our two disciplines through correspondence with each. Sigma Tau Delta is the annual sponsor of a series of events aimed at supporting the publication of student work and honoring those faculty members whose contributions to the universitys literary community have been exceptional. RESEARCH ASSISTANT, University of Redlands Creative Writing Department My work in the Creative Writing department at Redlands began with my appointment, almost immediately, to Student Assistant for Joy Manesiotis, professor of poetry. As such I was trained in research techniques, course preparation, manuscript submission, intercampus communication, event coordination, travel planning, office management, and various other professional and technical skills. My title grew to include those of Research and Teachers Assistant for Professor Manesiotis, and I took on work as well for a number of Creative Writing department faculty and staff. An aspiring poet and professor myself, I have made it my aim to establish a strong background in academia and administration, particularly that of the writing program at Redlands. PROGRAM ASSISTANT, University of Redlands Visiting Writers Series As Program Assistant for the Visiting Writers Series at Redlands, a title I held for two years, I was responsible for the promotion of the program, through outreach and advertisement, to members and nonmembers of the creative writing community at Redlands and in the Inland Empire. Under Professors Manesiotis and Bills I was responsible for both public relations and event coordination, marketing and management of one of the most successful of series in the area. PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN, Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council The Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council is a privately funded, locally owned and operated nonprofit located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the mission of which is to effectively reduce electronic waste through the recycling and reuse of computer electronics and equipment. A charitable organization, the CACRC provides refurbished computers to low-income and disabled families, churches, schools, and nonprofits throughout the state. As the organizations summer intern, I was responsible for the publication of press releases, public service announcements, newsletters, flyers, and other advertisements. My various secretarial duties included office reception, sales, and customer service. Most rewarding by far was my work with the Computers for Families program, by which, through extensive community outreach efforts, I was able to help supply hundreds of Louisiana families with low-cost computers for their homes. CULTURAL AMBASSADOR, Indiana University Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program My work for Iraqi Young Leaders was pivotal in shaping my desire to broaden my knowledge of unfamiliar cultures and communities, to challenge myself by writing outside of experience, and, to that end, to experience all the more expansively. As an ambassador to IYLEP I was expected to engage with young leaders on a number of levels, becoming acquainted with each of them individually and as a group as I joined them in their first encounters with U.S. culture, an experience that helped shape even my own perceptions of American society. TEACHING HISTORY TEACHING ASSISTANT, Purdue University English Department In conjunction with my acceptance to Purdues MFA program in Poetry in the fall of 2013, I was awarded a three-year paid teaching assistantship in Purdues Introductory Composition program, to teach a total of six separate sections of First-Year Composition (English 106) during my time here, and with plans to teach at least two sections of Creative Writing (English 205) in the future. In the fall of 2013, I served as Teaching Assistant to Professor Joy Manesiotis of the Creative Writing Department in a 100-level Poetry Workshop for undergraduates. CO-FACILIATATOR, University of Redlands Johnston Center and Alumni Relations In the summer of 2012, under the tutelage of Professor Bill McDonald of the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, I helped to co-facilitate a weeklong seminar on Ovids Metamorphoses for alumni of the Johnston Center. The conference was held at Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California. CO-FACILITATOR, University of Redlands Johnston Center for Integrative Studies In May of 2012, with the help of Professor Bill McDonald of the Johnston Center, I cofacilitated a three-credit May term course for undergraduates on Ovids Metamorphoses. TEACHING ASSISTANT, University of Redlands Religious Studies Department In 2010 and 2011, I served for two semesters as Teaching Assistant to Professor Lillian Larsen of the Religious Studies Department, in two sections of Hellenistic and Biblical Greek for undergraduates. COMMUNITY SERVICE FOUNDING PRESIDENT, University of Redlands Classics Club With the belief that classical studies are the foundation of Western philosophical thought and should therefore be at the heart of a liberal arts education, the Classics Club works to promote the classics as a discipline at the University of Redlands. The Classics Club is for anyone with a passion for, fascination with, or even curiosity in the Greek and Latin languages, and/or the mythology, history, philosophy, literature, science, art, and mathematics of the ancient world. Homework help and weekly tutoring is provided for students of both Greek and Latin. PROGRAM ASSISTANT, University of Redlands Bird on a Wire Student Reading Series As one of the first participants in Bird on a Wire, a student reading series begun in my freshman year by a fellow classmate and coworker, I became active almost immediately in the organization of the series, drawing from my experience as Program Assistant for the Visiting Writers Series to encourage interest among students in the events. Since its creation in 2010, Bird on a Wire has been a successful catalyst for community among writers and readers alike, fostering greater appreciation for and a deeper understanding of the power of the written (and spoken) word. PARTICIPANT, Johnston Poets Society With the success of Bird on a Wire came the revival of the Johnston Poets Society, of which I was also an active member. The Johnston Poets Society, one of the only Creative Writing clubs on campus, was created to provide a place for poets to come together as a community within the greater community of Johnston. WRITING TUTOR, Crafton Hills Community College Writing Center My work as a tutor at the Crafton Hills Writing Center proved, not surprisingly, of integral importance to my understanding of the English language, both a tool for effective communication and a medium of artistic expression. Equally as rewarding was the opportunity to observe my students progress over time as they, too, understood and as, inevitably, their writing improved. VOLUNTEER, Boxcar Books of Bloomington Boxcar Books is a charitable organization and community center closely affiliated with the Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project, both of which exist as all-volunteer efforts to

promote self-education and social welfare through reading, and greater accessibility by the public to reading materials. I enjoyed my work there immensely.
