Advanced Solutions for the Removal of Airborne Particulate and Gaseous Contaminants
Who We Are
AAF International traces its roots to Bill Reed, a skilled engineer and clever entrepreneur who recognized in 1921 that cleaning the air was critical to the growth of society, the development of technology, and the protection of human health. He developed the Reed Air Filter which represented the initial step in building an international company that globally dominates the air filtration industry AAF International. Today, selling under the AAF and AmericanAirFilter brand names, AAF air filtration products and systems offer the most comprehensive clean air solutions available in the world. Our products are the industry benchmarks for quality and performance, from simple roughing filters, to air pollution control, to gas contaminant removal, to the highest efficiency filters used in the most stringent clean environments. As you read these words, AAF filtration solutions are cleaning air around the globe making us more productive, protecting processes that produce technology and products that improve our lives, and providing protection from airborne threats that damage our health. Through more than 85 years of innovation and leadership in air filtration, our motto has not deviated from that stated by Bill Reed those many years ago Better Air is Our Business .
From its world headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, AAF maintains operations in 22 countries and more than 2,600 employees worldwide.
Environmental Factors
Damage to collectibles can be caused by uncontrolled temperature and relative humidity, dust and dirt, and gaseous pollutants such as ozone and sulfur dioxide. Temperature and humidity, if not controlled properly, can speed up the rate of chemical reactions which cause much of the deterioration of sensitive objects. Dust and dirt contamination can cause artifacts to discolor and can potentially scratch precious gems; whereas, gaseous pollutants may cause significant and irreversible deterioration of artifacts, metals, historic records, photographs, and marble through chemical reactions. Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) can also have adverse health effects on employees and visitors. AAF International can custom design air filtration products to meet the most demanding airflow and efficiency requirements and provide critically controlled environments with regards to temperature, humidity, and air purification in any museum or historic preservation setting.
Historical assets, such as this antique photo, can be effectively preserved with the proper filtration solutions in place.
The AAF Advantage Energy Savings with The Lowest Pressure Drop in the Industry
Air filtration systems must handle relatively large volumes of air. Consequently, operating costs are a prime consideration in air filtration design. One of the most important areas to be evaluated is airflow resistance, or pressure drop, across our filters. AAF understands filtration and energy savings. We challenged our air filtration team to develop proprietary specifications for filter media with the highest efficiency and least possible airflow resistance. Our next challenge was to create a working relationship with a media supplier that would meet our specifications and quality standards. The challenges were met. The result is filters for museums and historic facilities engineered and assembled to provide reliable products with the lowest possible pressure drop and energy savings. This is important because increased airflow resistance means more cost in the construction and operation of your system. You need the most accurate and complete testing to determine pressure drop across a filter. Our years of experience have proven that our volumetric testing is essential to determining true pressure drop across our filters.
Our air filtration team understands the requirements for preservation of our national and historic treasures differ for each application. Our experience in developing air filtration products for a variety of industries gives us the know-how to tackle any project.
State-of-the-Art Testing
AAF subjects all of its products to stringent testing using certified, comprehensive, and industryrecognized testing laboratories. Testing is essential in documenting filter efficiency, diagnosing problems, and assisting in research and development of filtration products. AAFs testing meets the highest standards for quality control. Our testing team is comprised of focused professionals committed to one goal accumulating the most accurate data possible from each test.
organic materials (see Table 1). They also can detect levels of gaseous pollutants in some instances at or below one parts per billion. Since copper cannot directly detect the presence of chlorine, a particularly dangerous contaminant in museums, the simultaneous use of both copper and silver coupons is necessary. Each coupon is analyzed as to the type and amount of film present and its relative contribution to the total amount of corrosion produced. For copper coupons, sulfide (Cu 2 S) and oxide films (CuO, Cu 2 O) are most prevalent. For silver coupons, sulfide (Ag 2 S), chloride (AgCl), and oxide (Ag 2 O) films may be observed. Reactivity monitoring results are reported as the amount of corrosion film thickness in angstroms (, 1 angstrom = 10- 10 m) that forms on coupon strips (normalized to a 30-day exposure).
Group (SOx) Sulfurous acids (NOx) Nitrogen Oxides Inorganic Chlorine compounds Oxidants Active Sulfurs
Cu 2 O Cu 2 S, Ag 2 S
Another reason for using silver coupons for reactivity monitoring is that the copper corrosion rate is sensitive to humidity changes, whereas silver corrosion is not. Small changes in humidity can significantly increase or decrease the amount of corrosion that forms on copper. Looking at corresponding pairs of copper and silver coupons (see Table 2) can provide information as to whether the amount of corrosion formed was due more to the presence of gaseous pollutants or to humidity effects alone.
