Never tell how you do a trick . This is the most important rule in magic. It is what makes magic special and mysterious. Good magicians never reveal or expose their magic secrets. If the audience discovers how you do a trick, you lose respect and your audience loses interest in your magic. People are naturally fascinated by magic as long as they don't know how it's done. So let's keep it that way. How? Keep it a secret! 2. Never tell your audience exactly what you are going to do before you do it. Much of magic is built on surprise. People love to be surprised. Think of opening Christmas presents. If you don't know what is in a wrapped package, you'll be surprised when you open it. Likewise, keep you audiences guessing and surprise them with your next feat of mystery. If you hold up a bunch of paper clips, don't say they're going to vanish. Instead, say something like, Watch this bunch of paper clips. They may change colors. When they vanish, tell your audience, That is, if they would stay around long enough. See what I mean? Surprise them! 3. Never repeat a trick for the same audience . Whether the audience is one friend or a group of people, stick to this rule. When someone says, Do it again, DON'T DO IT AGAIN! The first time you show a trick, you usually catch the audience off guard. If you show the same trick again, they will be watching more closely because they know what is going to happen. And they will watch for how it's done the second time, not for what is done. 4. Practice, practice, practice . First practice the basic mechanics of each trick. Learn the trick inside and out. Practice it over and over so you can perform it smoothly. One of the best places to practice is in front of a mirror, or better yet video tape yourself then play it back on your TV so you can see what the trick looks like to the audience. Once you can present the trick without a hitch, practice how you will perform it for an

audience. Performers call that presentation. And presentation is just as important as the mechanics of the trick. Practice also your patter, the words and stories you will use as your present the trick. All these things must go together to make your magic entertaining. 5. Be Yourself . When you present your magic, do it your be Houdini, David Copperfield, Lance Burton, or anyone to use other magicians a guide or models, but don't try else. Be you. After all, there is only one YOU in the Nobody can be you. So develop your own natural style. performances will come easier that way. 6 ----------------------- Page 7----------------------From time to time, as you progress in Magic, come back and study these rules. Remember them. Follow them. Good magicians have been following them for hundreds of years, so they must be important. LEARN HOW TO LEARN When learning how to perform the tricks in this course, read the effect over a few times until you have a clear picture in your mind of exactly what you are trying to create. In doing this first you may find yourself anticipating some moves before you read about them, but always read on. Collect the necessary apparatus and stand/sit in front of a mirror ready to practice. Having done this read through the whole of the method and make any necessary preparations. Then start at the beginning again, faithfully using the articles as directed. Resist the temptation to leapfrog through the instructions. Take your time, be methodical, and you will get on much better. When you are sure that what you are doing is correct according to the instructions, lay the instructions aside and continue to practice from memory. Practicing before a mirror in this way will teach you how to use your hands without looking at them. This is essential when you perform before an audience. Those who have never used a mirror for practice usually appear to be conjuring to themselves. An extremely bad disposition! There is only one person who can make you a magician and that is you. So go to it and one day you may be known as The Magician. Final Bit of advice: Magicians have seen almost everything if they have been practicing magic long enough especially when it comes to young learning magicians. True story, There was a party with lots of Professional Magicians present, all performing for this large house of guests. There was a young magician that was performing also but he had either not read the instructions or had not practiced because his effect was not working, he was exposing his effect to the non-magicians in the audience. All of the Professional Magicians saw what was happening and after his performance we all clapped and applauded him because it was the polite thing to do to a young learning magician. Several of the Elder Magicians approached him to show him the proper way to perform the trick and the young magician told us he didnt need any help he knew how to do the trick. So we let him. way. Don't try to else. It's okay to be someone whole, wide world. Your

Dont be a know-it-all when youre still learning. Even when you have landed your own show in Las Vegas, you can still learn from other Magicians, we do it all of the time. Remember: Learn How to Learn but have Fun at it. 7 ----------------------- Page 8----------------------How to Buy Magic All magic items for sale are based on certain principles in magic. The description reads like the best trick since sliced bread was invented. This is designed to make you buy this trick. When first starting out in magic, the best advice we can give you is this: 1) Start with the Tarbell Encyclopedia of Magic, volumes 1-8 or The Mark Wilson Course in Magic. This is an incredible set of books to start your magic career off on. This set of books will teach you all of the principles of magic, it will teach you tricks and how to perform them. It doesnt matter if you want to learn coins, cards, sponge balls, rope, silks or whether you want to specialize in close-up, cabaret or full stage illusions, this set of books has it all. This is one of the wisest investments in magic you can make. Another Great set of books is the, Now You See it Now You Don't, series by Bill Tarr. 2) Your local magic club has already started you off with demonstrations of different kinds and types of tricks, plus gave you handouts of revealing how to perform the tricks. Hows those rubber bands coming along? Rely on your magic leaders for advice and guidance on all of your magic questions, thats what were here for, to teach you the correct ways to learn magic and have fun with magic. 3) You have already learned several principles in magic, now based on that special knowledge, you should be able to re-read several descriptions of tricks for sale and try and figure out how those tricks are done. You can go to any magic website and read through the descriptions, ask yourself "How is that accomplished?" 4) There are several questions you need to ask yourself before laying down your money for a trick. A) What kind of trick would I like to learn? a coin trick or a dollar bill trick, a rubber band trick, a color-changing silk trick? B) Once you have an idea of what you are looking for then pick up your magic catalog or go to any of the magic web sites and look for that category. Its just like going to your school library, look for the title or category. Lets say youre looking to learn a dollar bill trick of some type. Either one that changes colors of the backs or one that actually changes the $10 bill to a 1 dollar bill or something similar to that. You look in your catalog or website and start reading the descriptions. Mark down on a notepad or paper the trick names that catch your interest. Note: If you are excited about demonstrating a trick and you are having fun doing it because its a really good trick with a real killer ending, and youve practiced until you can do it blind-folded and then you actually practiced this same trick in front of a mirror a hundred times without a miss, then there is an excellent chance that your audience will have a great time watching you perform this trick and hopefully they will have as much fun watching and trying to figure out how you did it as you are having performing it.

8 ----------------------- Page 9----------------------Once you have several written down, now go back and re-read the descriptions. Can you figure out how the trick is done? Eliminate the tricks the second time reading through them that for some reason dont sound as good as they did the first time you read the descriptions. Now youre left with 2-3 maybe 4 at most of money tricks that you would like to learn. Now either email your SYM, Society of Young Magicians part of the Society of American Magicians, http://www.magicsam.com/ leaders questions about the tricks you are thinking about buying or bring the list to your next meeting, whichever is soonest. The IBM or International Brotherhood of magicians http://www.magician.org/ has a Youth group also. Try the email system, it works and youll get several answers to help you make a really good decision. You are looking for some help and guidance to help eliminate the junk tricks from the good ones that are worth your time studying and performing them. Ok, now youve got some advice, Your SYM leaders know what your level of competency is, youve re-read the descriptions for the 10th time and eliminated another trick or two. Youre down to just 2-3 tricks that look good in the descriptions, sound like you are capable of performing them now youre ready to order form John. You make your final decisions and place your order. John has your new trick with the next week or two and its now in your hands. Pull the trick out and read the instructions, just in case there is an important set of instructions that says "dont do this or it will break" note inside. Sit down in front of your mirror and start practicing!!! This will hopefully help you eliminate buying stuff that you will never use and wasting money. There are 3 major reasons why magicians buy magic. We buy to entertain an audience, to satisfy our own curiosity, and to astound others with our amazing skills. All of these are satisfactory reasons for buying. It is only when we confuse them that we get into trouble. If we buy to please an audience, the trick may not fool us. Mistakenly we then sometimes assume that it is not a good trick. If we grasp at something that fools the socks off of us, it may well go completely over the heads of our audience, or not really entertain them. The question is, "Just who are you trying to fool? Who are you trying to entertain?" Most of us will say that we are buying to entertain an audience. That is our stated reason. There is always a hidden reason. Curiosity is so powerful it will make us buy even when we know we should not. This is one of the reasons why most dealers refuse to reveal the secret of the trick, until after we have paid our money. They know that curiosity will gnaw at us until we can no longer resist. We delight in being able to do something no one else can do. But that is exactly the problem. We want to do something that absolutely no one can do. We want to do REAL MAGIC! The important thing to remember is never buy simply because you are amazed. Unless your amazement is tempered with some understanding of the weakness, you will more than likely buy the wrong thing. Lastly remember this, look at the trick again along with the description and ask yourself when will I be able to present this effect or who will I be able to present this effect. If the answer is I need an entire auditorium then re-think 9

----------------------- Page 10----------------------your purchase. How many times will you be able to get in front of an auditorium full of people? Usually every magician starts with close up effects then progresses to Stand up or Parlor effects then Street Magic and lastly Stage Illusions. neat thing about Magic is YOU get to make all of the decisions as to which direction you would like to learn. How to Practice Everyday First take the effect out of the bag or box but don't read the instructions. That's right, don't read the instructions. Look at what you bought and see if you can figure out how it works or discover the secret without looking at the instructions. Be careful and don't force anything or break anything. Once you have it figured out then come up with your own ideas on how it should be presented including a story. Stories are what entertain people. The story can be true or false because nobody will ever know unless you tell them. I know when I do some of my shows, the people are so engrossed in my stories they forget about the magic until it happens right in front of their eyes. Then it's too late. The stories sound believable and some are true but it really doesn't matter, it's all about keeping my audience's attention. Keeping them focused on what I want them to focus on before the trick actually happens so they will be surprised and remember how great the overall effect was. Once you have the working parts of the trick worked out and you have a pretty good story to go along with it, now pull out the instructions and read through everything. The story you came up with will most likely be 90% better than whatever is in the instructions. Remember this also, everybody else that bought that same trick is also just using the instructions exactly how it came to them, be different, think creatively. Be yourself because nobody else can duplicate YOU! So first perform the effect in front of a mirror or better yet, use a video recorder if you have one or can borrow one, then hook it up to the TV and play it back, sit back and watch how you performed. Did you see the secret move or was it invisible?? You are seeing the effect exactly like your audience will be seeing your trick. Grade or rate yourself, how did you do? Watch how you first performed the effect naturally then duplicate the naturalness. For instance, let's say you are learning how to fake putting a coin into your left hand and then produce it from somewhere else. Look in the mirror how it looks when you really put the coin into your left hand. See how naturally it looks. The coin really is placed into your left hand and as soon as the coin touches your left hand, then your left hand closes over it. That is pretty much exactly what magic is all about in a nutshell. So place it in your other hand several times and watch extremely carefully how it looks. Now comes the fake part, pretend to place the coin in the other hand but this time pull the coin back inside your right hand at the same time your left hand closes over the imaginary coin. You've done it!!! 10 ----------------------- Page 11----------------------I was teaching this exact same step in a library magic class and I demonstrated this same procedure. Several times I actually placed it in my left hand and closed my left hand. I asked the class what did it look like and

The

where was the coin, half said right hand and the other half said left hand. I opened it to show it really was there. I did this 3-4 times actually placing it in my left hand until more and more believed it really was in my left hand, then I did the move and nobody caught the fake move because it looked exactly like the real move. The most important thing is they learned how to do that step just by observing then I told them to just wait, then wait until the timing was right to do the move. Now you can also take several moves and put them together into a routine of your own. A Few Important Tips Be Natural The real secret to good magic is just being natural. If you are natural then there are no signals to the audience that anything special or secret is about to happen, even though some may be looking for it anyway, especially magicians. I personally don't perform for magicians unless it's a special occasion because the general public is who pays me to perform, not magicians. Make it look like Real Magic. Let me say that again and I can't emphasize that last statement enough. Make sure everything you do is just plain natural so when the secret move does happen, nobody will ever see it coming. I want to get you started the right way, this is where you start. Watch Your Angles This means be aware of where your audience is at all times. When you go to perform the secret move or moves, what side will people be able to see the move if they knew it was coming???? An example: I was doing a show for some scouts, one of my favorite organizations. On my extreme right side were 2 magician friends of mine that had just started getting into magic, had a fair amount of knowledge but had not, let me repeat had not been performing in front of anybody so they had no performing experience. I was ending the show with one of the classics in magic and one of my all time favorites, the Cups & Balls. When it came time for the 2 final loads, I do a double final load, risky but has a killer ending that audiences love. Even though both magician friends were on my exposed side for stealing & loading the finals loads, because of plenty of practice and great misdirection, neither magician friend saw any of the final loads, not even the last ones which they didn't know about. They told me after the show that even though they had seen cups & balls performances before, they completely missed the stealing and loading of both sets of final loads and they admitted they were right there on the right side to be able to see all of the steals and loads!!! You need to be aware of your angles when practicing and especially when performing. If you practice enough in front of the video camera then play all of the practice sessions back on the TV, you will see everything 11 ----------------------- Page 12----------------------you need to see. Your family and some friends will be your best or worst critics depending on whom you choose. Practice Palming whenever you can IF you plan on doing sleight of hand effects. The last Magic class I taught, I greeted everybody that came in the door,

shook their hand and nobody knew I had a coin palmed in my hand or that I had a Thumb tip on either. You should never repeat a trick for the same audience because the surprise is gone and all they will be looking for is how was the trick accomplished. Show them something else no mater how bad they say they want to see the effect over again, don't repeat the trick. Magic is all about Presentation! A poor magic trick presented with a great presentation is actually better than a great trick presented with a poor presentation. Think about thatgo back and re-read that last statement.keep it in mind whenever you are practicing any effect. Patter in your presentation There are basically 2 ways to present magic, either talking with a story or not talking with a silent mime type act or you could do a manipulative act where you don't have to say a word just perform your incredible productions, multiplying of objects and vanishes all without saying a word. I have a magic friend that has studied magic for years but usually never performs for people because he is too shy or whatever his reasons are. We were working on his act one day, and I said why not do a complete silent act with just manipulations??? His magic sleights were very good as he proceeded to amaze my wife with his magic moves. He does very good magic but if you want to get paid for performing your magic then people have to see you. Keep in mind when you start putting your act togetherselect your tricks in sets of 3. Perform then in sets of 3 and end your show with a set of 3. There are opening effects, middle of the act effects and then the biggest and best ones are the closing effects. Your opening effects should be tricks that reach out and grab your audience's attention because half of them really aren't paying attention. Now that you have their attention with your opening set of 3 effects, now move into your middle act set of 3 effects. These are stronger than the openers but flow together all by themselves. If you are doing rope effects, don't do 3 rope effects in a row, mix them up in different parts of your show. You can even do a 2nd set of middle 3 effects before getting to your set of 3 closing effects. Don't rush through your act like you are running a race. Give the audience time to react to your jokes or one liners or even the end of each effect. If they loved the trick and they are clapping, then pause to receive their appreciation and then move on to your next effect. 12 ----------------------- Page 13----------------------I always, even now write out my effects in their order, with also side notes on what one liners I'll be using with each effect. Just a 1 or 2 word key to let me know which joke to use when. So when you perform for anybody, always make sure you have practiced like you are performing for a thousand people in a large auditorium. Do your sets of 3 in the exact same order that you practiced them. Never tell how you did an effect to anybody, even when they tell you they really want to know. This tells you that all of your hard work and practice paid off and you blew them away with your effect, the story and the ending.

It doesn't get much better than that. Sleight of Hand or Not? Sleight of hand is not difficult, it just takes a lot of practice to get it ri ght. The more you practice the better you get at sleight of hand. I would recommend starting with the effects that I selected from my prop bag from my web site. I selected these for a very good reason, there is a variety of effects there to help get you started. There is the first magic trick my Grandfather ever showed me and it had zero sleight of hand, just one really clever move and it could be instantly repeated 10 times and nobody would ever figure it out plus you could hand it out at any time, before you start, right in the middle of the trick or again at the end. It's called Color Vision. It's a great fooler but very easy to do once you know the principle behind this effect. The next one is a dice trick bordering on Mentalism if you would like to try some mentalism. The secret is a basic math principle that falls right in line with a magic principle also. Another great effect. The 3rd one in my prop bag has some sleight of hand to be learned. Relax it's just enough to make you look like a great sleight of hand expert but easy enough to where you can pick it up in no time. I do there 3 effects all of the time, that should tell you something. They kill . Keep one of your rules and main principles of magic in mind as you practice 1: practice2: practice and 3: practice Practice exactly like you are performing.no difference. Practice in your living room or den or bedroom exactly like you are really performing for your large audience every time. So when the time comes to actually do your show. 13 ----------------------- Page 14----------------------Misdirection Misdirection is all about the magic principle of getting your audience to look at one thing or in one direction while you do something else in another direction. It isn't always as easy as it reads. Let me give you an example: when performing the famous cups & balls which you should learn somewhere and sometime in your magic career, you are going to pick up a cup that has a single ball under it and secretly load either 2 balls instead of one, or maybe 3 balls or maybe even a ball 3 times larger than the one that is under the cup, called a final load. How are you going to do that when everybody is looking right at the cups? You know they are going to see every move you make and they will see the secret of the trick.not if you practice your Misdirection just like you practiced your entire act. Misdirection is a part of your act not something you buy separately. Picture this, there are 3 cups on the table or even one if you're doing a chop cup trick which only uses a single cup. You are going to pick up the cup and secretly load in a larger ball and put the cup right back on the table and not get caught. How in the world do you accomplish that??? Easy, use your Misdirection because it really works. In your pocket or your pouch or in your bag that is right behind your table

there is a large ball. Visualize there steps as you read along Let's say the ball is in your right front pocket and your pants are not very tight, loose enough to place a ball inside and take it out in a half second without any struggles. ( Side noteI once knew a guy that tried to load a large ball under a chop cup from jeans that were so tight you would have thought they had been spray painted on, it will never work. ) Ok, here goes, you just picked up the cup with your left hand and showed the little ball was really under the cup and placed it right back down on the table. Now at the same time you get ready to pick up the cup again, first use your right hand and reach in your pocket and get the large load ball in your right hand but don't pull it all of the way out of your pocket just to the top inside seam. Look at your audience, all of them and ask them directly either how many balls were under the cup or what color was the ball that was under the cup? At that moment that they answer whatever answer they tell you because it really doesn't matter what they say.here comes the perfect Misdirection Lift up the cup with your left hand and as you do this use the back edge of the cup to kinda kick the ball toward the front of your table. As the ball rolls towards the front of the table, bring the cup to your right front pocket and secretly load the ball.DO NOT bring the ball to the cup!!! Bring the cup to THE LOAD Ball so it can't be seen. It's better if the final load ball is 3 times larger plus a different bright color also. As you load the ball into the cup, now use your right hand fingers to curl under the cup keeping the load 14 ----------------------- Page 15----------------------ball from falling out and kinda hover the cup over the table top about 2 inches, which says I have an empty cup without you having to say anything to the audience at all. Now just place the cup with the final load ball on the table and pick up the smaller ball that should be close to the front of your table and ask them if they would like to see this ball appear under the cup again, you can also ask them if they would like to see it visibly or invisiblyand again whatever they say it really doesn't matter because the final load ball is already loaded and they see you put the small ball in your pocket with no secret moves. If they say visibly now pull the small ball from your pocket very slowly and pretend to place it under the cup but only tile the cup from the back end facing you up a little to place the ball under the cup and then stop and look at your audienceTell them as you place the cup back down on the table and again visibly place the small ball back in your pocketyou can't do it visibly because they would see how the trick is donesnap your fingers and lift the cup showing them the final load ball that is 3 times the size of the small ball and hopefully a different color. That is what perfect misdirection is all about. It works every time. 15 ----------------------- Page 16-----------------------

Close Up Magic Learned from 2 of the Best Michael Ammar & Doc Eason 16 ----------------------- Page 17----------------------Magician's Choice Effect: This is the one I knew you would choose The spectator selects from 3

face down business cards. They select the only card that says, This is the one I knew you would choose. The other 2 cards say, Wrong One and Not this one. Props Required: 3 same Business cards or 3 same pieces of paper. Method: You can set this trick up right in front of them. Either pull out 3 of your business cards or ask for 3 of theirs. On the back of each one, write these words. Wrong One, Not this One, This is the one I knew you would choose. Fold all 3 cards in half equally, remembering exactly which one is the one they will select. Place all 3 business cards face down on the table. They will unfold partly like a small tent, this is ok, just make sure the face of the cards is facing the spectator and not the ends. Now here comes what we call the Magicians Choice'. This will look like the spectator has a free selection of the 3 cards but they don't, you are controlling the cards unknown to them by not telling them beforehand exactly what is going to happen. All you have told them so far is either you have 3 business cards or you borrowed 3 from them, either way doesn't matter. Tell them, I've written something on the backs of these 3 business cards. It's like a prediction of something that is going to happen, I think. When you placed the 3 cards face down on the table, the one they will select is known only to you. It will work from any position but for this example let's say it's on your left side and on their right side. It doesn't matter which position the other 2 are in. You have a free choice of pointing to any 2 of these cards. If they point to the 2 end cards, then pull the middle card slightly towards you, now point to either one of the 2 they selected. If they point to the selected card have them pick it up and read it out loud then read out loud the other 2. If they point to the card on your right, then pull that card towards you and have them read the one on the left which is the selected card. (Note: nowhere in the instructions have you said they get to keep the one or ones they pointed to. Also as a side note, notice you tell them to point not to pick up!) From the start again, the selected card is on your left and their right. They point to the middle one and the one on your right, slide both of them towards you and have them pick up and read the only 1 card remaining, then read the other 2. This is the perfect way to hand out your business cards. 17 ----------------------- Page 18----------------------The next 2 effects are all about our old friend Misdirection. They are basically the same effect just different props as you will see. 18 ----------------------- Page 19----------------------19 ----------------------- Page 20----------------------20

22 ----------------------- Page 23----------------------Torn & Restored Napkin Effect: Torn & Restored Napkin Props Required: 3 Napkins all 3 with the same design. Method: Preparation beforehand, roll 1 napkin tightly up into a small ball and conceal in your right hand. Have 2 or more of the same design napkins on a table. As you lean forward to pick up 2 napkins from the table, say to the spectator or patient, Would you like to try an experiment? Hand 1 napkin to the spectator and keep one yourself, continue to conceal the balled up napkin hidden in your right hand. Take the napkin with the right hand and hold it up by the upper right corner to demonstrate. Say, This is called You do as I do, Tear the napkin completely in half, right down the middle. Then put the 2 torn pieces together and tear them again, this time sideways. Put all of the torn pieces into your left hand, continue to conceal the hidden napkin in your right hand. Now roll them all together in a very tight little ball. As the spectator is rolling them, Stop them and say, No, roll them in the other hand. This gives you the reason to take the napkin out of their right hand. As you take it out of their right hand, Quickly just toss their torn napkin directly over their head in a long vertical motion and as you come downward replace their torn napkin with the un-torn napkin you have been concealing in your right hand before the trick even started. Now continue to roll and re-roll the torn napkin for several more seconds. Now you can say some magic words, snap your fingers, etc. Open your hands first, showing the napkin is still torn and not restored. When the spectator opens their hands, there is a big surprise, their napkin has been completely restored!!! Give them a big round of applause. (See Tarbell or Mark Wilson course in magic). 23 ----------------------- Page 24----------------------Teaching Magic Learned from The Best Magic Teacher & a Great Friend Over 25 Years ago Michael Ammar & Bill Then & Now 24 ----------------------- Page 25----------------------25 ----------------------- Page 26-----------------------

26 ----------------------- Page 27----------------------Jumping Paperclips & Dollar Bill Effect: 2 single paperclips magically join together off of a dollar bill. 2 paperclips, a dollar bill and a rubber band.

Props Required:

Method Safety noteBefore you fold the bill, place a rubber band over the middle of the dollar bill directly in the center. Now go ahead and fold and add the paperclips. Now when you pull the 2 ends away from each other, the paperclips will not only still link together but now they will link themselves around the rubber band and won't fly off and hit anybody. Fold a dollar bill facing the audience, by thirds, fold one third facing the audience by folding the right side towards the left, and fold the left side behind the bill on your side to the right. This will create a dollar bill that now has 3 sides if you look down from the top of the bill. Place the first paperclip on the front 2 pieces of the billfacing the audience. Make sure you only clip the first 2 pieces and do not include the back piece. Now take the other paperclip and clip from the rear, the back 2 pieces. Place this paperclip to the right of the first paperclip. (Important Safety Note here 2 things, do not look down from the top of these clipped bills and do not point the top of the bill towards anybody.) Now comes the magic, slowly, keeping your eyes away from the top of the bill, pull the ends away from each other and the paperclips will automatically link together and fly straight up into the air above the dollar bill. Pick them up and show them magically linked. 27 ----------------------- Page 28----------------------Safety noteBefore you fold the bill, place a rubber band over the middle of the dollar bill directly in the center. Now go ahead and fold and add the paperclips. Now when you pull the 2 ends away from each other, the paperclips will not only still link together but now they will link themselves around the rubber band and won't fly off and hit anybody. Rubber Bands Effect: other. 2 Rubber Bands locked inside each other, visibly penetrate each

Props Required: 2 same color #16,#17,#18, or #19 rubber bands. Do not use rubber bands of different colors. (Tarbell and Mark Wilson books, Michael Ammar permission Crazy Man's Handcuffs can be purchased directly from Michael's website or any magic shop). Method : With your left hand pick up 1 rubber band and hold it on the ends of your first finger and thumb, close to the ends of the finger and thumb, down on the nails. Now with the right hand, pick up the other rubber band and place it on your first finger only, letting it dangle down behind the rubber band on your left hand. As the right hand rubber band drops behind

the left one, with your right thumb place it inside the loop as it passes the bottom of the left handed rubber band on the bottom loop. Now you should have one rubber band locked behind the other band and no way to get them back out without letting go of one of the ends. Slowly move the right band back and forth touching each portion of the inside of the left hand but not touching the left hand rubber band. st As you start to stretch each band against each other for the 1 time, your 2nd finger of your right hand comes down and grasps the top of the right 1st finger band. As you stretch each band against each other this will bring the st right hand 1 finger and thumb directly against each other. In this split second is when the 2nd finger holds the top of the band and the right 1st finger drops down directly into the opening that the right thumb is making. st Then the right 1 finger comes through the loop and lifts up from the second loop making it appear as if the 2 rubber bands have just penetrated each other. st As the right 1 finger comes through the bottom loop, when it comes directly up, start sliding the rubber bands across each other in a rubbing motion, it makes it look like they just melted right through each other. 28 ----------------------- Page 29----------------------29 ----------------------- Page 30----------------------30 ----------------------- Page 31----------------------Stand Up Magic Learned from 2 of the Best in Magic Aldo Colombini & Bob Sheets 31 ----------------------- Page 32----------------------Mental Telepathy & Color Vision Effect: A Cube with different colors on all sides is placed in a box and the

top placed on top with the spectator remembering the color on top. The box is handed to the Magician while the Magician's back is turned. The Magician turns around and reveals the color of the cube while standing directly in front of the spectator. Props Required: One Color Vision Trick Prop Method The Magician hands out a box, a colored cube and the top of the box to the spectator to examine. While the Magician turns his back to the spectator, the spectator remembers 1 color and places the cube inside the box with their remembered color facing up. The spectator places the top on

the box and places the box in the Magicians' outstretched hands. As the Magician turns around he slides the top of the box one fourth of the way around the box, revealing half of the color. ( From the spectator view it looks like the box is still sitting on top of the box with the cube hidden.) The magician holds the box in direct line between the spectator's eyes and the magician's eyes, the wide range of vision will reveal the color inside the box. As soon as the color is noted, the magician places the box behind his back, revealing the color at the same time bringing out front the box still with the lid on top of the box. As the Magician opens the box to reveal the same color he announced to the spectator. This trick may be repeated. For the Advanced student.Try remembering the colors on opposite sides, have the spectator place their color face down in the box. As the Magician looks at the color revealed through the partial opening just remember the opposite color.

32 ----------------------- Page 33----------------------33 ----------------------- Page 34----------------------Mental One Ahead & a Partner in Magic Crime Effect: One person names a silently toughed object after coming back in from another room. Props Required: 2 partners in magic crime

Method: Through a pre-arranged silent signal one person instantly knows which object was touched every time without saying a word. One person leaves the room. The Magic partner lets anybody tough any object in the room but tell them not to say a word at all. The Pre-arranged signal between the 2 Magic partners is they agree on an object say like a stapler or briefcase as their agreed upon object. Now the other partner comes back into the room and the silent partner starts toughing different objects in the room in a random order. Right before they tough the spectator object, he or she touches the agreed upon object like the stapler or briefcase. For instance, the spectator touches a red chair in the room. Now the silent partner starts touching any object at all, in any random order. As soon as he or she touches the stapler or briefcase then the next object will be the spectator red chair. Now what really makes this work great is allow the partner to go past the selected object by 2-3 other objects so that nobody can figure out the code. Now you should never repeat a trick but in this case you can if you had agreed upon this secret. Between the 2 magic partners, agree that the second time switch the agreed upon object to the red chair and touch the stapler or briefcase as one of the very first objects. This disguises the code and nobody can figure out how this trick is performed. 34 ----------------------- Page 35----------------------Performing Street Magic Learned from 3 of the Best Kozmo Gazzo & Cellini

35 ----------------------- Page 36----------------------Magician's Choice & 10 Card Force Effect: Spectator selects a card and then from 3 poker chips, their selected card is on the bottom of the selected poker chip. Props Required: 1 regular deck of cards and 3 prepared poker chips. Method Preparation beforehand, cut the corners of 3 different playing cards and using double-sticky tape tape the 3 different corners on the bottoms of 3 poker chips. Have the selected card you will force in the middle of the pile face down. Have the spectator point to any 2 of the poker chips, using the Magicians choice have them select the card you are going to force. Leaving them with the selected card still face down on the bottom of the poker chip, bring out the deck of cards. Now using either one of the forces, force the card matching the bottom of the poker chip on the spectator. Have them turn over their selected card, now let them turn over the selected poker chip. They match! Leaving the other 2 poker chips still face down on the table, they will reach over and turn both remaining chips face up for a double surprise, they both reveal 2 different cards. Key Card Effect: Key Card Never gamble with cards 1 Regular deck of cards

Props Required: Method:

The Key card principle. You can set this up 2 different ways.

Method #1) Know beforehand what the bottom card is or place YOUR favorite card on the bottom of the deck. Place the cards in the card case. Ask the spectator, Would you like to see a gambling trick or demonstration? Take the cards out of the card case and place them face down on the table. Ask the spectator to cut the cards anywhere they would like, place those cut cards down on the table off to the side of the bottom of the deck. Now give them their choice of either the top card of the bottom deck or the bottom card on the deck they cut off. Which ever card they choose have them look at the card and place it face down on top of the deck they cut off. Now have them place the original bottom cut portion of cards back on top of their selected card and square up the deck nice and neat. They just placed your key card directly on top of their selected card. From the top going down, you will see your key card first then their selected card will be next. Pick up the deck with the cards facing you, locate your key card, the card closest to you beside your key card is their selected card. 36 ----------------------- Page 37----------------------If you allow them to cut the deck once before looking for their card, they could cut directly between your key card and their selected card. If this happens, then your key card will end up on the bottom and their selected card will end up on top.

Method #2) Have the spectator shuffle the cards several times. As they are shuffling the cards, notice what the bottom card is on their last shuffle. If you didn't get a chance to view the bottom card, then when they place the deck on the table, pick up the deck showing all of the cards face-up. Saying, You did a really good job of mixing up these cards. Notice what the bottom card is, this is now your key card and proceed like the above trick. 10 Card Force Effect: 10 Card Force. Naming the Spectator's card after the selected card is shuffled back into the deck by the Spectator . Props Required: 1 Regular deck of cards.. Method: Preparation beforehand, Secretly place the card you want them to th take the 10 card down from the top of the deck. For instance, The Jack of th Diamonds is the 10 card down from the top of the deck. Place the cards back in the card case. When you're ready to do a card trick, bring out the deck and place them face down on the table. Ask the spectator to name any card between the numbers of 10 and 20, 11-19. The numbers 10 or 20 do not work with this simple math trick. The Spectator says 15, Count down one at a time from the top of the deck, 15 cards. Be sure to place them one on top of the other until you count out 15. Do Not get them out of order. Now take the small pile of 15 cards, straighten them up and place all 15 back on top of the deck. Tell the spectator they could have chosen any number but they chose 15. ( Note: before you start counting, allow them to change their mind to a different number if they choose. If they change or don't change their number, remind them at the end that you gave them a chance to change their number and they either did or did not change their mind.) Now tell them that (their number they named) in the case 15, is made up of 2 numbers, a 1 and a 5. Add them together and you get 6. Count down 6 th cards from the new top of the deck and deal them the 6 card face down, This will be the Jack of Diamonds. Turn your head away so you can't see, have them show everyone in the room. Now turn back around and have them place their card back in the deck anywhere they want to. Straighten up all of the cards and now let them shuffle the deck as long as they like. Ask them how many chances do you get to locate their card? Usually they will say 1. Look into the deck and pull out the Jack of Diamonds, place it face down on the table. Ask them what was their card? As they name their card out loud, slowly turn over the 37 ----------------------- Page 38----------------------tabled card face-up revealing their card the Jack of Diamonds. You can use the Rising Card Trick to reveal their selected card. Now there are several ways to reveal their card if you use this force. Knowing what their card is before the trick even starts, is powerful. You can have their card written down on the back of your business card, on a piece of paper, in a powerpoint presentation, on a piece of paper in a sealed envelope held by the spectator before the trick even starts. Just use your imagination.

38 ----------------------- Page 39----------------------A Neat Trick 39 ----------------------- Page 40----------------------Natural Sixes from the files of Ray-Mond Remove the 4 sixes from a deck of cards and lay them face down. Then take 6 other cards and lay them face down. Fold up a slip of paper written with the words: "You chose the six pile" and place it by the cards. Tell someone to choose one of the heaps and then read the paper. No matter which heap is chosen, the written statement proves correct. One heap equals four sixes. The other heap equals six cards. Dont repeat this trick. DO this trick first, then immediately go into your second trick before they get a chance to examine the piles of cards too closely. Change for a Dollar Effect: 4 Quarters drop out of a previously shown 1 Dollar bill. 4 Quarters and a $1 dollar bill.

Props Required:

Method Preferably borrow a $1 dollar bill. ( Beforehand, have 4 quarters in your hand.) As you either take a $1 dollar bill or already have it in your hand, either one. Hold the 4 quarters behind the bill with your fingers at the ends of the bill. The front of the bill is facing the spectator. Take 1 end of the bill and flick the end from behind, basically to show it's just a $1 dollar bill and also that your hand is empty. Now as you reach behind the bill and get ready to flick the other end of the bill, transfer the 4 quarters to the other hand. Now you have flicked both ends of the bill, showing basically both hands empty. Now wrap the dollar bill around the hand that is holding the 4 quarters in a cone shape several times. Take the wrapped up bill in the other hand and slowly pour out the 4 quarters. You've just given them change for a dollar. 40 ----------------------- Page 41----------------------Thieves & Sheep This is one of those neat self-working effects that looks like great sleight of hand. Effect: 6 quarters magically jump from one hand to the other. 8 quarters and 2 hands

Props Required:

Method Start off with 6 quarters on the table in front of you on one side and the other 2 quarters on the other side. Tell the story of the farmer that had 2 barns, your hands are going to

represent the 2 barns. 2 thieves come along and see the 2 barns and the 6 sheep without anybody watching over the sheep. The 2 thieves decide to hide in the barns and steal the sheep one at a time so they won't get caught. (Put one quarter in each hand and slowly close both of them leaving your palms pointing downwards.) One at a time start picking up the quarters, with your right hand, until there is one left on the table, stop and say, I think I hear the farmer coming. Now start putting the quarters back on the table starting with the left hand. Stop when you have none in the left hand and 2 in the right. ( The audience thinks there are still one each in each hand.) Now stop and say, I don't hear anything, it was a false alarm. Now start picking up the quarters one at a time starting with the right hand. Again stop when there is only one quarter left on the table. Say I thought I heard the farmer again.stop and say I must have been hearing things. Now pick up the last remaining quarter with the right hand (Now the trick is really over but the audience thinks there are 2 hands or barns with the quarters being evenly distributed.) Tell the rest of the story that the farmer was really a magician and he had cast a spell over both of his barns and his sheep. Slowly open your right hand and show the 6 sheep have all gathered there and open the left hand and show the 2 thieves are stuck in the other barn or your left hand. 41 ----------------------- Page 42----------------------Teaching Animals to be a Part of Your Magic Act 42 ----------------------- Page 43----------------------43 ----------------------- Page 44----------------------44 ----------------------- Page 45----------------------45 ----------------------- Page 46----------------------Now that you've learned the basic 10 count, here is a great little sponge ball routine that I created and feel free to use it right out of the box. Sponge Balls & Germs Effect: A sponge ball routine talking about germs and how they appear, disappear, multiply and even grow. Can be done right from your pockets, no other props are required. Everyone knows something about germs. Germs routine written by Bill Warren. Props Required: 4 small 1 sponge balls and 4 or more large 2-3 sponge

balls or a jumbo sponge ball. Each set can be any colors. Large balls can be a different color than the smaller ones. Colors are good for this effect. 46 ----------------------- Page 47----------------------Method Start off by having the 4 large loads in your upper right hand pocket near the top inside of the pocket. Have 2 of the smaller sponge balls in each front pants pocket. Both hands go into each pocket and palm out one sponge ball. Once the balls are palmed in both hands, ask if anyone knows where germs come from or what do they know about germs. Bring your left hand up to your mouth, do a small fake cough and produce a sponge ball. Pick up the single sponge ball with your right hand, which still has one sponge ball palmed, using your first finger and thumb. Turn the palm of your hand towards yourself as you display the single germ or sponge ball. Put it back down on the table adding the palmed ball from your right hand. Squash it or roll it on the table talking about how germs multiply. Life your hand and show that there are now 2 sponge balls. Now do Frank Garcia's 10 count with sponge balls. It's performed like this: 2 sponge balls are sitting on the table in front of you. Count 1 place your right hand palm down on top of the right ball and on count 2 place your left hand palm down on top of the left ball. Count 3 has your right hand lifting the right hand and turning it palm up and placing the back of the hand down on top of the sponge ball hiding it from view. Count 4 has the left hand turning palm up and placing the back of the hand down on top of the sponge ball hiding it from view. Count 5 has the right hand lifting up and pointing with your right index finger at the ball on the table, Count 6 picks up the same ball with your index finger and thumb, palm towards you, showing it to the audience. Count 7 does a fake transfer into the left hand. As the left hand closes it also lifts up off the table displaying the ball that has been sitting under the left hand. This is great misdirection for the fake transfer. Count 8 uses your right index finger to point to the ball that was under the left hand. Count 9 uses your right hand to pick up the ball, adding it to the ball that is already palmed there. Count 10 has both hands closed and making a moving motion of each closed hand moving towards each other, then you open both hands and both balls are now in your right hand. Now you will proceed to make the germs disappear and multiply. There are 2 balls on the table, Pick up one with your right hand and do a fake transfer into the left hand, pick up the other ball with your right hand and put both balls into a spectator's hand, telling them to squeeze the germs tightly because you don't want them to get out and multiply. As you show your left hand is now empty, have the spectator open their hand to now show that both germs are in their hand, reach into your left pants pocket and palm out the other small sponge ball while they start to open their hand. With your left hand reach over and pick up both balls, add the 3rd ball to the group and put all 3 germs back in their hand, telling them not to move their thumb because that's how the germs got out. Reach into your right pants pocket and palm it out and do another fake cough producing the last small germ. Do a fake transfer into the left hand, open your left hand showing that the 3rd germ has disappeared. Have them open their hand showing that all 3 germs have gathered in their hand. Put all 3 germs on the table, With your right hand that has the 4th small

ball palmed, pick up the first ball from the table and add both germs to the left hand, then openly pick up the 2nd ball and push it down into the top of 47 ----------------------- Page 48----------------------the left fist then pick up the 3rd germ and place it inside your pocket but palm it back out. Blow on or cough on your left hand, open it, showing all 3 germs are back in the hand. Do this sequence one more time; this time the spectators will think you have palmed the ball out of your right pocket. Now offer to do it one more time. This time, you're going to switch and make all 3 vanish, you're also going to add the giant balls to the spectators' hand for your finish. All 3 germs are back on the table. With your left hand pick up one ball with your index finger and thumb, displaying it high in the air, making the spectators look up and away from the table. Bring the left hand down and close it. With the right hand, pick up another germ from the table and raise it high in the air also, now on the way down, as they think you're placing the ball in the right hand into the left, you keep the ball in your right hand and steal the one from the left. As you steal the ball out of the left hand, you turn your left hand palm down with your left hand closed. The misdirection of turning your closed hand palm down keeps them from seeing the steal. Now with your right hand use your first 2 fingers and pick up the last remaining germ from the table, use your 2 fingers to pick up the ball and move your hand, palm down but forward displaying the last germ. Place this last germ in your pocket, leave all 3 of the small germs in your pocket down to the bottom of the pocket. Keeping your left hand closed tightly, Use your right hand and point it up in the air, Say Wait a minute, I have a couple more germs right here in my right pocket. Go into your right pocket and palm out the large balls, compress them tightly and place the large balls tightly back into the spectators' hand, telling them to really hold them tight this time because you are now going to attempt to get the 3 germs in your left hand into their hand while they are holding them tightly. Don't move your thumb or they will escape again, this will get them to really squeeze the sponge balls very tightly. Now you can use your left closed fist to touch the back of their closed fist 3 times, asking them if they felt the germs jump over or not, or you can open one finger at a time counting one, two, three and open your left hand showing all of the germs have completely disappeared from your left hand. Now when the spectator opens their hand, there are the large germs that have really multiplied right in their hands. You can even change and make the color of the large loads a different color for a better effect. Go from Red to Green or Green to Red. This is a really easy routine to teach and fun to perform for kids, adults too, because they all know about germs. The Audley Walsh Sponge Ball booklet goes into more depth about sponge balls along with the Frank Garcia booklet. ROPE MAGIC Effect: Rope with Appearing Knot on the End. 48 ----------------------- Page 49-----------------------

Props Required:

A single piece of rope, any color about 2' to 3' long.

Method Beforehand, tie a knot at the end of one of the ends of the rope. Bring this piece of rope out concealing the already tied knot in your right hand. Stroke the rope once or twice to straighten the rope. Bring the end up to your right hand and flip it out and down for a count of one. Nothing happens. Say something like, I've been working on this new trick but sometimes it just doesn't work. Bring the unknotted end back up to your right hand and flick it out and down again, again nothing happens. Look deflated like this thing never works. Now, bring the unknotted end up for the final time and this time as you flick the rope out and down, switch the 2 ends of the rope, Hold onto the unknotted end and let the secretly held knot, flip loose and just let it dangle at the end of the rope. Now look as surprised as your audience. I guess this does work sometimes. 49 ----------------------- Page 50----------------------50 ----------------------- Page 51----------------------51 ----------------------- Page 52----------------------52 ----------------------- Page 53----------------------53 ----------------------- Page 54----------------------54 ----------------------- Page 55----------------------Treating this like a business If you will treat this fun part time job just like a business it will reward y ou. Ever since I started working this like a business and not just another hobby, I have made some great money plus gotten some pretty good tax refund checks for it. Keep track of everything you do, like keep track of all mileage whenever you talk to anybody about Magic, it's now a business expense. If you take somebody to lunch and talk magic or perform any magic, that too is now a business lunch and it's tax deductible. Any office supplies you buy that have anything to do with your magic business are all tax deductible. Naturally all magic props, DVD's, magazines and memberships are deductible. Just like any fees you paid to get into a magic lecture or bought lecture notes or other props from another magician are all deductible. If you go to a magic convention for 3-5 days, your meals, hotel, mileage if you drive and plane tickets if you fly are all deductible. Now you will need a room to practice and store your new magic business. Measure it, mine is about 25% of my total house, actually closer to 40-45%. So let's say my magic room is 25% of my total house, now deduct 25% of

all of your utility bills for magic. If you buy a computer, like a laptop, to print all of your magic mailing labels or keep track of everything in your magic business it's tax deductible also. You can choose to take the deduction over 2-3 years instead of taking it all at once which gives you deductions for the next 2 years. Download the FREE Open office program for Mac and PC's from www.openoffice.org Use the spreadsheet to create columns for all of your deductibles that have anything to do with your business. Everything I named above. When tax time starts to roll around go find you a tax preparer that specializes in small businesses, they will actually go find you deductions, nobody else will. You can also claim advertising and costumes. For advertising you need business cards and a web site. Go to www.vistaprint.com for your business cards and tri-fold flyers. Choose the glossy cards for your business cards. For web sites, I'll be more than glad to put together a professional looking web site but you will need a web site. You should not pay more than $10 per month for web site hosting, $10 for your domain name and not more than about $300 for someone to build your actual web site. Then every year you should only pay for renewing your domain name and web hosting. There might be a small fee to add pictures and other pages to your web site as it grows along with your income. Make sure at least 50% of your income goes back into your business for new props, etc. Start having people shoot digital pictures of all of your shows. You can also have people shoot live video of your shows also. You can use the digital pictures to publish on your web site and use the video footage to make promo videos on CD for people to see how good your show is. If you have any questions just shoot me a magic email and I'll give you a magic answer. Good luck and have fun in your new business. 55 ----------------------- Page 56----------------------Bill Warren WWW.ComedyMagicWilliam.Com WWarren3@Cox.Net 56 ----------------------- Page 57----------------------57
