Queen Anne History


Queen Anne was most popular in the 1800s 1900 The name Queen Anne was made up by an architect named Richard Norman Shaw. Queen Anne houses are usually 1-2 stories.

Queen Anne style house plans are an mixture of country house and Elizabethan cottage architecture blended with Tudor, Gothic, English Renaissance, and American Colonial styles
There are different Queen Anne styles such as British 19 century Queen Anne styles, American Queen Anne style, and Australian Queen Anne style.

Steeply pitched roof


Queen Anne houses always have steep roofs The slope of a roof has an effect on the inside of a building, and the style. Its makes the house look better. Steeply roofs last longer because the slope of the roof helps the water slides off.

Turrets/Tower
Majority of Queen Anne Houses have turrets/towers Turrets is a small tower that projects vertically from the wall of a building such as a medieval castle Towers is a building or part of a building that is exceptionally high in proportion to its width and length. They are there to protect the roof.

Double Hung Windows


The double-hung window is the most common style of window available. Double-hung windows have two sash in a single frame which slide up or down to provide ventilation.

(Fish scale and Square cut)
Fish scales are a hallmark of Queen Anne style houses built from 1880 to 1910, wood shingles shaped like fish scales often decorated gables and dormers. Queen Anne houses have fish scales and square cut. Some times they have both. Shingles protect sloping rooftops from the effects of rain, snow and hail It also makes the house look good. Shingles can be made from asphalt, wood, fiberglass, ceramic or metal

Wrapping porches
A shallow porch that circles around two or more sides of a house The Queen Anne style normally has a covered porch that often wraps around one or two sides. The porch is important because it creates a large space for family and friends to enjoy the outdoors.

Australian Queen Anne style


Its is the first Queen Anne home built in Australia Its a 2 stories home that was built in 1885 The house represents a rich example of Queen Anne elements: red brick walls with stone dressing, balconies, bay windows, etc.

County Hall, Wakefield, designed by architects James Glen Gibson and Samuel Russell in 1894

In 1892 there was a architectural competition for a County Hall to be built in Wakefield.

Carson Mansion American Queen Anne style


The Carson Mansion is located in Eureka, California. It is considered to be one of the best American Queen Anne style building.

It is know a private club.


The home and ground is not open to the public.
