CHAPTER -1 INTRODUCTION
Throughout the centuries man has striven to expand his capabilities through the use of machine. His ever inventive mind has constantly devised ways to use tool to increase his abilities to explore the world around him. To go faster, deeper, higher and further than before. Coupled with his need to find
new thrills, new adventures and new modes of transportation, the invention refinement of the motorcycle seems an inevitable outcome. It would seem that ichelangelo conceived of the bicycle as early !"th century. It had wheels of similar si#e and even pedals and chain. Albeit without any apparent means of steering.
Through never built, it was a remar$ably clever design, and early bicycle ma$ers would have done well to study his concepts, there have, in fact been " machines built based on his drawing, attesting to the viability of his design. It wasn%t until !&'( that the first serious attempts were made to produce motor driven bicycles. These very first were powered by steam, and driven by leather belts or as in the case of the roper steam velocipede of !&'( by a system of levers attached to a cran$ on the driven wheel.
In !&&) the *aimler, +urope this is consider by many as the first true motorcycle or motor bicycle, as it was the first to employ an internal combustion engine and was designed from the ground up to be motor powered. *esigned by gottlibe *aimler it was powered by an ,tto cycle engine producing about - horse powers. .ote this design again employed wooden wheels and *aimler dropped the twist grip controls from his !&// design in favor of leavers on the frame.
In !&(" Hildebrand and 0olfmuller, 1rance 0orlds first production motorcycle. It came with a !"2& cc water cooled four3stro$e motor producing 2.) bhp. And speed of 2) mph. two3wheelers produced and the sales of two3wheelers respectively. In the year 277&3277(, the annual production of two3wheelers in India stood at around /'77&7! units. The trend of owning two3wheelers is due to a variety of facts peculiar to India. ,ne of the chief factors is poor public transport in many parts of India. Additionally, two3wheelers offer a great deal of convenience and mobility for the Indian family.
8a9a9 auto began trading in imported :espa Scooters in !("&. eanwhile Automobile 5roducts of India ;A5I< commenced production of scooters in the country in the early )7%s. 4ntil !()&, A5I and +nfield were the only producers of two3wheelers in India. However, 8a9a9 signed a technical collaboration in !('7 with 5iaggio of Italy to produce 8a9a9 Scooters. This deal expired in !(/!.
The condition of motorcycle manufacturers was no different. 4ntil the mid &7%s, there were only three ma9or motorcycle manufacturers in India namely =a9doot, +scorts, and +nfield. The two3wheeler mar$et was opened to foreign manufacturers in the mid &7%s. The industry, which had seen a smooth ride before, faced fierce foreign competition. otorcycle companies li$e the >amaha, Honda, and ?awasa$i, set up plants in India in collaboration with various Indian two3wheeler companies.
Companies li$e +scorts, =a9doot and faced immense competition from smaller !77 cc 6apanese technology motorbi$es. 8i$es manufactured by Hero Honda, the only company manufacturing four3stro$e bi$es at that time, gained massive popularity. In the mid &7%s, ?inetic introduced a gearless scooter in collaboration with Honda. This scooter became instantly popular with the younger generation, especially people who found it difficult to use geared scooters. The
introduction of scooters created another segment for people such as women and teenagers who could not get used to driving either motorcycles or gearless scooters. any companies such as ?inetic, T:S, and Hero also started manufacturing mopeds that proved immensely popular with people who wanted a simple riding machine. The change in the government%s policy owning to pollution control norms and the ?yoto agreement saw the phasing out of two stro$e two3
wheelers from production. Currently there are around !7 two3wheeler manufacturers in the country, they being 8a9a9, Hero, Hero Honda, Honda, Indus , ?inetic, =oyal +nfield, Su#u$i, T:S, and >amaha. The latest trend in the two3wheeler mar$et is the introduction of electrically operated vehicles from a range of manufacturers such as Indus and Hero. These can be recharged from convenient household electrical points. The only disadvantage is speed, which is restricted to around 2) miles per hour.
Currently, the motorcycle mar$et is witnessing a demand for higher volume engines. 5reviously, the !77 c bi$es were very popular owning to the high fuel efficiency offered. However, the mar$et is maturing fast. Sensing this movement, the manufacturers launched various models in !2)cc, !@)cc, !)7cc, !'7cc, !&7cc, 277cc, 22)cc, and even 2)7cc by considering not only fuel efficiency but power as well. ,ur two wheeler industry is divided into three categories

1rom definition it is evident that research design is more or less a blueprint of research. At the outset may be noted that there are several ways of studying and tac$ling a problem. There is no single perfect design. The research design can be classified in to three broad categories ;A< ;8< +xploratory *escriptive
;C<
Casual
+xploratory research is focus on the discovery of ideas. +xploratory research is carried out to define problems and developed hypothesis to test later. An exploratory study is generally based on the secondary data that are readily available. It does not have to change its focus of direction, depending on the availability of new ideas and relationship among variables.
*escriptive studies are underta$en in many circumstances. *escriptive studies can be complex, determining a high degree of scientific s$ill on the part of the researcher. Casual research helps in determined cause and effect relationship between two or more variables. The present study see$s to find out the consumers attitude towards buying of bi$e. The study also aims at findings out the drawbac$s of the

a dreamer. He dreamed of a better way of ma$ing piston rings, founded a small company, and began production. He dreamed of giving people everywhere an economical form of transportation, and began producing small motorcycles, including one built in !("( called the *3Type *ream. He also loved racing too. So his company built bigger and faster machines, two, four, five and six3cylinder race bi$es and won the Isle of an.
Honda
HondaKs first motorcycle was born out of necessity in immediate post 0orld 0ar II 6apan, where public transportation was desperately overcrowded and gasoline severely restricted. Aoo$ing for a solution to his, and thousands of othersK, personal transport problems, Honda came across a 9ob lot of )77 war surplus two3stro$e
motors designed to power electric generatorsC nobody else wanted them so Honda pic$ed them up cheap. His aim was to adapt them for attachment to push3bi$es and, by ,ctober !("', his small factory in Hamamatsu was ma$ing complete, ma$eshift motor bi$es using proprietary cycle frames. 8ecause gasoline was in short supply, Honda adapted his motors to run on turpentine, a fuel that he himself distilled from pine trees and sold throughout 6apan. Turpentine ;or gas thinned out with
turpentine< was not the best thing for powering motorbi$es, and reBuired a lot of strenuous pedaling to warm the engine up enough before you could get going. HondaKs first bi$es were very successful and supplies of the surplus engines ran out after a few months. 8usiness was good by then, so he decided to manufacture his own motors. 4sing the surplus motor as a model, Honda designed and built his own )7cc engine.
In .ovember !("/, the !L2 horsepower A3Type Honda was being manufactured and sold as a complete motorbi$e. 8ecause the motorbi$e gave off a lot of smo$e and a stench of turpentine it was $nown as the MChimneyM. Soichiro Honda started Honda built an empire. otor Company in !("&, at the age of "!. Soon after he hoo$ed up with financial whi# Ta$eo 1u9isawa and together they
!("& saw Honda introduce a (7cc version of the A3Type $nown as the M83TypeM. 8y !("( Honda came out with the M*3TypeM. r. Honda was involved in every step of the two3stro$e *3Type *reamKs design and manufacture. This was HondaKs first motorcycle. This was far from simply slotting a motor into a pushbi$e frame. Honda called his machine KThe *reamK, because his dream of building a complete, motorcycle had come true. Soichiro Honda was an
engineer and was always loo$ing to produce better and more sophisticated machines. It turned out to be the !"'cc, ,H:, four3stro$e +3Type *ream. A powerful machine producing ) !L2bhp capable of )7mph. It had a steel frame and proper suspension front and rear. 8y ,ctober !()! the new *ream was in production at the rate of !@7 units per day.
In !()2 Honda produced the first MCubM 13Type, a !L2 horsepower, )7cc, two3stro$e engine that was produced in huge numbers. >ou could get one to fit to your pushbi$e or buy the complete red and white Honda MAuto 8aiM. Aess than a year after its Introduction, production was ')77 units per month, at that time it was /7N of 6apanKs powered two3wheeler mar$et. In !()@ Honda produced the (7cc, four3stro$e single, a motorcycle of even greater sophistication. This was $nown as the 8enly, in 6apanese this
means MconvenienceM. The 63Type 8enly had a three3speed gearbox, produced @.&bhp, a pressed steel 1rame, rear suspension with the engine and swinging arm on a sprung pivot, and telescopic front suspension. 8efore long they were selling at a rate of !777 units a month. In !()" a 277cc scooter, the 6uno, was introduced to capture some of the sales from the :espa scooter copies that were being built in 6apan. Honda produced different versions of the *ream and 8enly motorcycles over the next
few years incorporating different si#e engines ;up to @)7cc< and other refinements. In September !()/ Honda introduced their first twin3cylinder motorcycle, the sophisticated 2)7cc ,HC four3stro$e C/7 *ream. It was the forerunner of HondaKs high3performance !2) and 2)7cc twins.
In early !()& Honda fitted an electric starter to the 2)7cc *ream and named it the C/! and, in !()(, the latest 8enly an incredibly sophisticated !2)cc ,HC four3stro$e twin, capable of /7mph was introduced as the C(2. In 6uly !()& Honda introduced in 6apan what became the worldKs most successful motor cycle, the C!77 Super Cub. The Super Cub was developed over three years to be a cheap and practical motorcycle that literally anyone could use. It used a )7cc four3stro$e
,H: motor and centrifugal clutch with three3speed transmission. It was so easy to operate that even new riders could ride it as easily as a pushbi$e. Its innovative frame without a crossbar made it popular with the ladies and set a new trend in commuter motorcycling. The word MscooteretteM was coined to describe this step3through style motorbi$e which sold in )7, /7 and (7cc versions.
In !()( it was the first Honda motorcycle sold in the 4.S., eventually becoming the worldKs best3selling vehicle ;@7 million to date<. As proof the original concept and design was perfect is the fact that todayKs C)7, C/7 and C(7s have only detail changes to set them apart from the machines of 2) years ago. That same year, !()(, Honda introduced the 2)7cc C/2 *ream in Amsterdam. This was the first 6apanese bi$e to be officially shown in +urope.
It surprised the crowd with its unusual pressed steel frame, swing arm and front leading lin$ for$s, sophisticated ,HC all aluminum engine, electric starter and indicators. In the 4? learners had 9ust been restricted to motorcycles of this si#e and wanted the fastest bi$es they could legally ride. The HondaKs were the fastest 2)7s around, and the C/2 with its improvements li$e !23volt electricKs
and wet sump lubrication, successor of the C/!, was capable of &7mph and could still get '' miles per gallon. The C8(2 retained the pressed3steel frame and leading lin$ for$s while the C8/2 received a tubular style frame and telescopic front suspension. In !('! two years after Honda started selling Super Cubs, Honda stunned the racing world with M i$e the 8i$eM HailwoodKs twin victories at the

The classic C8/2 and C8// helped fuel interest in riding, got America on two wheels, and established Honda as a serious player. The Haw$ name has appeared on Honda models C8/2, C8//, C8"77T, .T')7, :T=!7771 ever since, the latest being the !((& :T=!7771. In !('2 this brea$through advertising M>ou meet the nicest people on a HondaM shattered the myth that motorcycles were only for tough guys and

The C// a @7)cc version of the *ream and the C8//, a Super Sports motorcycle producing 2&.)bhp were introduced in !('@. In !('" the C() a !)"cc version of the 8enly and a !'!cc version ,f the C8!'7 was also offered.
The Hondells recorded MAittle HondaM in !('". Honda entered the American pop culture as the sub9ect of this hit song. In !(') Honda, always eager for a new mar$et, 9umped into the big leagues with their first big, fast production motorcycle, the innovative "@bhp C8")7 twin. This was a double overhead3camshaft machine with torsion bar valve springs that would do a genuine !7"mph, a machine to challenge the )77cc3plus bi$es.
*espite its performance, sales of the C8")7 worldwide were 5oor. A number of engineering changes were made, in !('/ a five3speed gearbox was added. In !('/ Honda had their first big off3road win in the MfirstM 8a9a !777. In !('& Honda stopped production of the C8/2 and C8// and produced a new line of high performance S,HC twins with five3speed gearboxes, called the C82)7 and C8@)7, with the C8@)7 able to hit !7'mph.
At the To$yo Show of !('& Honda, after months of tantali#ing rumor, unveiled a landmar$ achievement that would change the motorcycling world forever. A /)7cc bi$e with four cylinders and a disc bra$e that was so fast and powerful a new word, Msuperbi$eM, was coined to describe it. The C8/)71 four was the biggest bi$e out of 6apan, proving that a high3performance motorcycle could also be very reliable.
In April !('( Honda set the motorcycle world on fire with the introduction of the C8/)7. 5erformance was staggering, easily hitting !27mph and at the time it had better acceleration than anything else on the road. !(((, their first two3wheeler for India to prove everyone wrong. There%s been several scooters from other manufacturers, along with several minor Activa upgrades from Honda, but the fact of the matter remainsC an Activa is an Activa. Honda has mil$ed the Activa cash cow, without ever tampering too much with the proven formula. a9or upgrades have come in a shift up from !72cc to !7(cc, and more recently in the engine embracing Honda +co
Technology, H+T technology, plus a new body. Still, the Activa is now a shade long in the tooth, and it%s a good time to move on.
So the Activa !2) steps in on cue, to fill in the blan$s left vacant by previous Activa models. The new !2) includes a tough metal body, often loo$ed up to and preferred in India, with elegant, still conservative body lines. A single, halogen powered headlight is at hand, as are clear lens indicators, flush fitted to the front apron. Instruments are a mix of analogue and digital, sitting over a silvered casing, speedometer calibrated up to !!7$ph and a green economy #one mar$ed from @7 to )7$ph. The Activa !2) engine comes with roller supported roc$er arm fingers for good efficiency, and given its conservative
power figures, you can expect an only nominal fuel3efficiency drop over the smaller, !7(cc Activa. Also loo$ forward to a Honda typical engine that provides refined and smooth performance.
This new Activa seats riders in a comfortable, upright riding position. ?eeping with its premium positioning, the upcoming Activa !2) features five3 spo$e alloy rims, a pair of telescopic for$s as front suspension and single rear shoc$ absorber, with engine doubling up as a stressed member of the frame. A hydraulic !(7mm front disc bra$e is optional, while a cable actuated !@7mm drum handles stopping duties at rear. Additionally, the Activa !2) comes with

It is no secret that the automatic scooter segment of Indian two wheelers mar$et is fast heating up. >amaha recently launched the =ay V and T:S will be soon seen launching a 0ego based scooter that could rival the Honda Aviator.
