VirtualCenter Database Sizing Calculator for Microsoft SQL Server

This calculator estimates the size of the VirtualCenter database after it runs for a certain time period. This estimate is calculated from the information that you enter about your VMware Infrastructure 3 deployment, such as the number of hosts and virtual machines. There are three versions of the calculatorone for VirtualCenter 2 releases prior to 2.0.1 Patch 2, one for VirtualCenter 2.0.1 Patch 2 or later, and one for VirtualCenter 2.5. Note: For 2.0.x releases, because the method of performing rollups to calculated derived values changed with Patch 2, the size that the database attains over fdadftime is much smaller. In both cases, the estimate is based on the following assumptions: The database is SQL Server, version 2000 or later. The Statistics Collection Intervals are set to the default values. The information you provide to the calculator remains valid for the entire period. To see the upper limit of the database size, enter the expected maximum values. The database size is adequately buffered to account for the fact that it is not possible to estimate the Event and Event Arg records. The fragmentation level of the database is around 50%. Defragmenting the database reduces its size. The results assume a reasonable number of tasks and events, although the final value does not depend on this. The calculator presents results for each statistics collection level. If you alter the collection level, the size estimate will be somewhere between the values for the initial and final collection level. Changing the collection level temporarily for a limited period (a few days) should not affect the size estimate. Instructions: Enter the data for your deployment in the highlighted yellow boxes. The results for each statistics collection level are as follows: The number of samples collected by VirtualCenter every five minutes. This calculation shows the impact of setting a higher statistics collection level. The estimated size of the database after the indicated number of years. The higher and lower bounds on the estimation, assuming a 15% variance. The amount of space needed for the temporary database used during the calculation of rollup values, such as averages. This additional space should be allocated along with the primary VirtualCenter database. If you were running VirtualCenter 2.0 and later upgraded to 2.0.1 Patch 2, then for the same inputs, the database eventually shrinks from the value prior to the upgrade to the Patch 2 value. The time scale for the shrinkage is on the order of months, and you can expect to achieve the final value after running for one year. Note: If you installed the database rollup patch for VirtualCenter 2.0, the results here will not be as accurate.
