Oliver Berking, passionate sailor and lover of classic yachts, creates a unique publishing haven for GOOSE. Fifth-generation proprietor of the silverware manufacturing company Robbe & Berking (world market leaders in fine silver cutlery), the yacht dockyard Robbe & Berking Classics, the yacht brokerage firm Baum & Knig and publisher of GOOSE. In Flensburg, where we are from, you live on the water. You live on the water and you are bound to tradition. My main work is overseeing the creation of fine tableware for cultivated international customers in our silver manufacturing company. In addition to this, I am a passionate sailor and classic yacht enthusiast.

The Robbe & Berking Classics yacht dockyard grew out of this passion in 2008. Here, classic motor and sailing yachts are restored with great love and attention to detail directly in Flensburg city harbour. The shipyard also builds replicas of particularly fine classics that have been lost. Also born from this passion is the magazine GOOSE. Like the Swedish folk hero Nils Holgersson, who rides on the back of a goose, our team of editors fly with GOOSE over the worlds most beautiful coasts, seas and lakes in search of their stories.

g: Was sollte ein Besucher gesehen haben und warum? Susan Rockefeller: Ganz bestimmt sollte man die Kunstsammlung im MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) gesehen und dort auch einen Film angeschaut haben. Man sollte im The Modern gegessen haben, dann nach Chelsea zu den kleinen Kunstgalerien und nach High Line zum Spazierengehen. Im Central Park sollte man es sich gnnen, die vielen Menschen beim Laufen, Spielen und bei den diversen Auftritten anzuschauen. Die Konsumkultur bestaunen, whrend man einfach nur Madison und Fifth Avenue entlangschlendert. In Greenwich Village die Musik und die Kaffeehuser genieen, im Dizzys am Columbus Circle den Jazz. Es macht auch einen Riesenspa, wegen der schrgen Lden und der Galerien und der Kunstszene nach Williamsburg in Brooklyn zu gehen, und ins PS1, wo innovative, aufstrebende Knstler ausstellen. g: Was sollte ein Besucher gegessen haben und wo?

g: Seit wann leben Sie hier und warum? Susan Rockefeller: New York City ist eine der schnsten und energiegeladensten Stdte der Welt. Hier gibt es einen Reichtum in der Vielfltigkeit, an Kunst, Kultur, Restaurants, der Geschichte und in einer Magie, die elektrisierend ist fr alle, die hier leben und an diesen reichen Gaben teilhaben mchten. g: Was ist das Besondere an dieser Stadt? Susan Rockefeller: Hier passiert etwas rund um die Uhr, an sieben Tagen der Woche. Die Stadt ist wie ein Gittermuster angelegt, man kann meilenweit spazieren, ohne Navigationsprobleme zu bekommen. Es gibt die Museumsmeile mit einigen wirklich tollen Museen, es gibt den Central Park und noch so viel mehr.

// South sea dream island with Dragon the first one that was built in New Zealand, from exotic timbers, in 1965. Not a fairy-tale dragon, but a classic sailing boat of the same class, plus a traditional sailing canoe and a luxury motoryacht, and a sailing ketch and a private plane. This exotic dream has a name: Laucala Island, and on this island is one of the very few seven-star hotels of this world. Malcolm Forbes bought the island in 1972, allegedly for a meagre 450,000 dollars. He also lies buried here. A few years ago, Red Bull-Boss, Dieter Mateschitz, acquired the three by five kilometres large island that lies east of Taveuni, Fiji, from the Forbes family. He then had a spectacular resort built here. 25 open-walled villas lie scattered around the north tip of the island. Views of the ocean and palm-trees and the cool sea-breeze in your bedroom are all inclusive. The climate is pleasant all year round, averaging 26 to 27 degrees Celsius from June to August and a very cosy 30-plus from November to March and it is in this season that you also have the best wind for sailing. Of course there is a lot more to do here, including sports activities from diving to golf, wellness and meditation. The classy architecture blends perfectly into the island ambience and the cuisine is, as you might expect, exquisite. Too good to be true? Rates begin at 3,500 dollars a night. Most of the illustrious guests stay for a week to ten days.

The green-hulled Sira caught the stern of Delphi despite the King putting the helm hard down. Both yachts needed about two minutes to get disentangled. King Harald retired from the race while Delphi was able to continue. We lost a couple of minutes but otherwise it was not a big problem said Delphis helmsman, Micael Sielecki. Apart from a few scratches there was luckily no major damage. Whatever the case, it was a new experience for the young crew of Delphi having a king apologising to them. His majesty didnt get back to sailing for another 2 days: The king said Sail, but the wind said No! The next day it blew so hard that all the races were cancelled. Before the start of the races, Harald V had expressed his great pleasure to be racing on the German-Danish waters. I have never sailed here before but I am excited about the Flensburger Fjord said the 74-year-old. The King has successfully skippered his classic yacht Sira, which is only a few years younger than himself, at several events in the past years. For instance, in 2008 at the World Championship in Hanko, Norway he won the Sira Cup for classic 8-Metres designed before 1960. This is a trophy he himself donated to the 8-Metre Association in 1983.

Unluckily he didnt manage to repeat that feat in Flensburg. The Canadian yacht, Raven, was faster, so second place in the Sira Cup for the King. Despite this he was satisfied: It was a great regatta. Second place was the best we could manage as Raven was unbeatable this time. She is really fast and the crew sailed excellently. With a wink he added Maybe we should start training here a week before the event and not just one day. A remarkable feature of the Eights is that many older boats can compete almost on an even level with modern high-tech yachts with aluminium masts and wing keels. Also quite remarkable is the fact that some of them honour tradition as it once was by actually arriving on their own keel at the event. Peter Wilson, a boat builder from England and owner of If, has sailed her to these events for years, regardless of whether they take place in France, Flensburg or Helsinki. His example was followed by the Russian, Alexey Rusetsky, owner of Astra II, who sailed her from St. Petersburg. This is even further than the route from England and so he won the new If-Trophy for the ship that has travelled the furthest on her own keel which was donated this year by Peter Wilson. As always the event had been more than worthwhile. The 48 crews from 15 nations had a happy and challenging sailing week despite a cold front that brought rain and very windy conditions for several days.

Well, first I have to tell you why Goose? The sailors among you, and especially the

friends of the wonderful metre-class yachts, may know that Goose was the name of one of the fastest 6-metre yachts ever built. Olin Stephens, whose designs won the Americas Cup for decades, designed her in 1939. Yes, we love classic yachts and will grant them the space they so rightly deserve in Goose, but Goose is also the goose on whose back I fly over the coasts, lakes and seas of this world to regularly report on the finest things that I will find on these travels. On our first flight, for instance, we met a King, not any King, but the Norwegian, Harald V. He instantly knew about Goose the yacht, as he himself also loves classic yachts.
