sm.Yetasa wealthofstudieshavedemonstrated,Westernimperialismwasitselfahighlyfractured fieldinwhichparticularpowerrelationstookforminresponsetoavarietyoflocal conditions.Moreover,fromaworldhistoricalperspective,itisimportanttoviewthe latenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturiesasaperiodinwhichgoods,ideas,people, andpracticescirculatednotonlywithinbutalsoacrossimperialboundaries,shapingthe developmentofeachimperialsystemandleadingtocooperationaswellasclashes amongthem. ThisseminarwillusethehistoryofJapaneseimperialismandcolonialismtoexplore broaderissuesintheglobalandcomparativehistoryofempiresinthemodernera.Topics weaddresswillinclude:theformationofthemodernimperialistglobalsystemthecultural politicsofempirescolonialism,"colonialmodernity,"colonialidentities,and colonymetropolerelationsgenderandimperialismregionalmigrationempireandtotal waranddecolonization,history,andmemory.InadditiontoreadingsontheJapanese case,wewillworkwithstudiesoftheBritish,French,Dutch,andAmericanempiresaswell asgeneralworksonempires.NopriorcourseworkonJapanisrequired,thoughIwill assignaconcisehistoricalsurveyaspreliminaryreading.
