Alissa Zalewski EDR 321 Winter 2014 Proving the Law of Cosines and Law of Sines Tentative date:

May 13th I. Benchmark/Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.SRT.D.9 (+) Derive the formula A = 1/2 ab sin(C) for the area of a triangle by drawing an auxiliary line from a vertex perpendicular to the opposite side. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.SRT.D.10 (+) Prove the Laws of Sines and Cosines and use them to solve problems. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.SRT.D.11 (+) Understand and apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to find unknown measurements in right and non-right triangles (e.g., surveying problems, resultant forces). Behavioral/Objective: The learner will understand and apply the Law of Cosines and the Law of Sines. The learner will prove each law first without structure and then with a guided activity. The learner can use the laws to find unknown side lengths and angles of triangles. Anticipatory Set: Begin with warm-up problems reviewing the triangle congruence properties. Objective/Purpose: Today we prove both the Law of Cosines and the Law of Sines. By the end of the period, you should be able to explain, understand, and apply the Law of Cosines and Law of Sines. Input: a. Task Analysis: i. Warm-up. Four problems reviewing properties. ii. Discuss warm-up. iii. Working in groups, students will prove the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosine. iv. Students will complete guided worksheets to prove both laws, individually or in groups. v. End with discussion over proving both laws. vi. Students will fill out an exit pass on Socrative. 1. Pretend you are explaining the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines to a middle schooler. a. How would you explain the laws to the students? b. How would you explain the proofs to them? b. i. Remediation: The lesson will incorporate the following learning styles: audio, visual, and logical. ii. Intrapersonal: Students can work on assigned worksheet alone if they choose. iii. Interpersonal: Students can work on assigned worksheet with other students if they choose. c. Method and Materials: i. Ways of presenting: Discovery, discussion, demonstration, and independent/group work. ii. Materials needed: Worksheets, warm-up questions, Elmo, calculator. VI. Modeling: a. Model warm-up if any questions. b. The teacher can model the proofs at the end of class. Check for Understanding: a. Warm-up. b. Proof activities. c. Circulating room while students are working. d. Exit pass. Closure: a. End with discussion and modeling of proofs for the Law of Cosines and the Law of Sines. b. Exit pass questions on Socrative. i. Pretend you are explaining the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines to a middle schooler. 1. How would you explain the laws to the students? 2. How would you explain the proofs to them?
