English 4 04/06/14 Company of Wolves Desire Many feminists take issue with LRRH and its portrayal of women because it makes women seem passive. Giving women this image make men think that they are weak and incapable of taking care of themselves just as Little Red in Perraults story. In this story objectification was frequently used because they never saw her as a person but pure beauty and food. Carters story is different from Perraults because Carter makes her main character more realistic. Carters story is more relatable to women that are seductive, brave, and still beautiful instead of a weak, scared, and easily manipulated young girl. Carters main character desires spontaneity but her villages patriarchy ways try to prevent that yet she overcomes her obstacles and achieves her goal. Carters Red Riding Hood character is an beautiful and confident young woman who desires more spontaneity in her life. While Red and the Hunts bet who would get to grandmothers house first she asked what would you like? She asked disingenuously. A kiss This reveals that she wants spontaneity because asking him disingenuously what he wanted when she knew he would agree to her kiss because shes looking for excitement thus showing her desire for spontaneity. Red also comes from a village of fear, and most men do not come

out during wolf season and this has increased Reds desire for spontaneity because she doesnt have anyone to interact with. Furthermore Red decided dawdle to her grandmothers house so that the huntsman can win their bet shows that she looks forward to awarding him with his winning kiss Because Red hasnt encountered other men in her village she shows quick interest in the huntsman, thus excited about her kiss. When Red referred to the huntsman as a handsome gentleman proves that she is sexually attracted to him and shes looking forward to their kiss thus desiring spontaneity. Although Little Red desires spontaneity her desires wont be easily accomplished. Patriarchy possibly blocked Little Reds desire for spontaneity. In reds household Her father might forbid her to travel in the woods alone which reveals that she lives in a patriarchy household where her father is dominant. The fact that her father would forbid h er shows that he portrays his daughter as weak and thinks shes incapable of being careful out in the woods. In addition to her fathers underestimating portrayal of Red the huntsman [offers] to carry her basket, she [gives] it to him because he told her his rifle would protect them revealing that the huntsman also likes dominance Because in patriarchy societies men like to control, protect, and defend women and these two men in Reds life are trying to control her as well as underestimate her abilities. This kind of society pushes Red closer to her desire of spontaneity because she doesnt want people controlling her she wants to go and enjoy life herself. Although men in Reds life try to dominant her, her desire for spontaneity will push her to go as far as she needs to. Red has overcome all obstacles to achieve her goal of spontaneity. While the Wolf constantly made comments on eating she burst out laughing; she knew she was nobodys

meat revealing that shes achieved her goal of spontaneity Because shes no longer fears wolves and knows that they will not eat her because she has befriended them with her bravery. By saying shes nobodys meat and laughing she proves that shes achieved spontaneity. Moreover the story concludes with Red sleep in grannys bed, between the paws of the tender wolf suggesting that shes accomplished survival as well as spontaneity because she feels comfortable to sleep with the wolf thats eaten her grandmother and awarded him of his prize from the bet shes seen more than shes ever saw in her pervious village. This proves shes an expert when it comes to spontaneity because shes moved on to a brand new life. Although Carters main character (Red) battles with spontaneity and her village patriarchy ways almost abolishes her dreams she achieves her goal of creating a spontaneous lifestyle of sporadic excitement. Carters success at creating a feminist version of Little Red Riding Hood is qualified because women are no longer weak however still struggle with names like slut because of the seductive image that was given to females. Women are just as important if not more as men in this world. If they dont start getting credit and respect for the hard work being done for important things such as child birth, than the world will parish and fall apart without the cooperation of the men.
