Traditional Lesson Plan Samford University Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education & Professional Studies

Phillip Ketcham Spanish I McAdory HS 11-29-12 9:30 AM

Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to conjugate ar verbs in the present tense correctly. Students will be able to speak using the new ar verbs they will have learned as well as the new vocabulary learned in this section. National & State Standards: National Standards: Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. State Standards: 1.) Recognize target language words and phrases spoken in context. 3.) Present oral and written information in the target language using familiar vocabulary and correct structure in the present time frame.

Pre-Instructional Activities: Teacher will introduce himself/herself to the class and begin explaining the lesson objectives for the day. In this section, the teacher will explain to the students the importance of conjugating verbs in the present tense correctly and speaking as they pertain to communication in the Spanish Language. Also, the teacher will make English to Spanish grammar connection by explaining how a verb tense is the form of the verb that shows when an action is happening. After explaining that the teacher will say something along the lines of, the present tense shows that an action is happening now. The Spanish present-tense verb form estudiamos can be expressed in English in three different ways: we study, we are studying, or we do study. The teacher will remind students the difference between an

infinitive (non-conjugated) verb and a conjugated verb. The teacher will conclude the pre-instructional activities by reassuring students that the pattern of ar verb conjugations in Spanish is very predictable.

Directed Teaching: Teacher will write on a white board a conjugation table and begin to conjugate the verb Hablar, but before conjugating the verb the class will repeat after the teacher the meaning and pronunciation of Hablar. The teacher will remind the students that the endings for ar present tense verbs are o, as, a, amos, is, or an.

Guided Practice: Teacher will begin by asking students to turn to page 97 in their textbooks ( Avancemos! Uno, Mcdougal Littell) and look to activity 11. The teacher will explain the activity out of the textbook and write the following example on the board: Modelo: Claudia/ llegar a clase temprano. Respuesta: Claudia siempre llega a clase temprano. The students will perform the activity. The teacher will then call on students using the popcorn method (the teacher will have notecards with each students name on it and will draw randomly from the list of names) to come write out one of the sentences in the activity. After completing the sentence and conjugating the verb correctly, the student will read the sentence out loud to the class.

Independent Practice: Teacher will divide the class into two teams. For independent practice, the class teams will engage in a game of competition. The teacher will stand at the back of the classroom while the students face the front. The teacher will call out an ar verb and a representative from each team will go to the white-board and proceed to conjugate the verb. The first student to correctly conjugate the verb and recite the verbs conjugation verbally will receive one point for their team. The team with the most points at the end of the game will receive a prize (candy) at the end of class. The teacher (Coach Dabbs) will keep tally of the points by his desk. Formative Evaluation: Teacher will create a quiz for students to take towards the end of the class (see attached). In the quiz students will be individually asked to conjugate 3 ar verbs correctly. They will receive credit for the correct translation of the verb and conjugation of the verb.

Differentiating Instruction: While students are working in guided practice, the teacher will walk around the room monitoring students comprehension of the material. If the teacher sees misinterpretations of vocabulary, incorrect understanding of subjects, or incorrect conjugations of ar verb, teacher will point these mistakes out to them. If teacher sees a many students making the same mistake, the teacher will stop the class work momentarily and address the problem to the whole class by re-teaching the material that students were struggling to comprehend. Considering some students may finish early with their class work, they will be asked to write out 3 sentences of their own using ar verbs. For accommodations/ modifications, depending on students individualized education plans (IEPs), students may not be asked to read sentences off the board aloud to the whole class, but record their part to turn into the teacher at a later time. Some students will be allowed extra time to complete the quiz if extra time for quizzes and tests is proscribed in their IEP.

Closure: When all of the students have completed the quiz, the teacher will commend them for their work. The teacher will quickly remind the students of the objectives for the lesson and show the students how those lessons were met throughout the lesson. The teacher will then hand back to the students their quiz in order that the students may see their grade.

Reflection upon Lesson: After completing the lesson at McAdory High School, I think I learned a lot about myself and how I handle high school students. I was satisfied with myself in that the students behaved relatively well. Students asked questions politely, and the interruptions that occurred during the class I was able to quell. In the future, I can always be more prepared. I need to think through the entire lesson plan better in order that I might be better prepared for student questions on the material. Also, I need to do a better job of making transitions from one activity to another smoother and faster in order to keep students attention. I believe students today perform best and comprehend the most, when they are asked to perform a variety of activities throughout the class period.
