Culture Today, Poland has a population of about 38 million people. 98% of the population are Poles and speak the Slavic official language, Polish. English is the most popular foreign language. Poland's national culture developed as a medley of Latin and Byzantine influences and was further propagated by the numerous European immersions throughout its history. Conventions and traditions display a diverse mix of the East and the West. It is kaleidoscope of the spirited relations of the Eastern ornamental style and the somber Islamic influence. Poland has a long-standing tradition of tolerance towards minorities. It is well known for its social graces offering exceptional hospitality. A few general occurrences in Poland include being offered pair of slippers for comfort on the very first visit to someones home, an overwhelming amount of food (feast) during dinners with an abundance of home distilled flavored liquor and a display of old fashion courtesy on public transportation. While dining in a restaurant, tipping (at least 10%) is expected. Since 95% of the population is Roman Catholics, all major church holidays are strictly observed, particularly Christmas and Easter. On such occasion, Polish families come together to enjoy good spirit and good food and drink. It is worth knowing that the Poles are a particularly friendly and supportive people, who cultivate a sense of duty towards each other and their families and friends. Although a highly individualistic society, the Poles are hierarchical. As a manager working in Poland, it is advised to establish a second level of communication, having a personal contact with everybody in the structure, allowing to give the impression that everybody is important in the organization, although unequal. Poland is a masculine society so Managers are expected to be decisive and assertive. The emphasis is on equity, competition and performance and conflicts are resolved

by fighting them out. Poland has a high preference for avoiding uncertainty so they maintain rigid codes of belief and behavior. Time is money, precision and punctuality is the norm, and security is and important element in individual motivation. Poland is a short-term orientation culture. They exhibit the great respect for traditions and have a strong pressure to keep up with others (materialistic), and have a strong concern for establishing the truth.
