Stars fall to Tabor, sweep Robert Morris


OCU goes 2-1 in tripleheader

OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma City University fell to Tabor (Kan.) before talking two games from Robert Morris (Ill.) Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium. The Stars, ranked No. 5 in NAIA baseball, scored three in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't rally past Tabor and fell 5-3 in the first game of the day. OCU rebounded by sweeping a doubleheader with Robert Morris 7-2 and 7-5 to improve to 11-3 on the season. Tabor held the Stars scoreless for six innings and took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Jared Baker scored on a Tabor fielding error and put OCU on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Halbert and Hunter Marcum followed with back-to-back RBIs to make the score 5-3. Tabor's Alex Mann retired the side before the Stars could do any more damage and handed OCU the 5-3 loss. Brad Wieck made the start for OCU and struck out 12 in six innings of work but was saddled with the loss. Ricky Spain tossed one inning in relief. After Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead in the top of the forth, OCU responded with a two-run bottom half of the inning. Forrest Smith singled to right field and drove in Ryan Wright from second base. Austin Murphy followed with a sacrifice fly and plated Baker to give OCU a 2-1 advantage. Wright singled up the middle and scored Adonis Askew from second to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Stars in the bottom of the fifth. OCU scored four runs to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single from Laszlo Horvath and a sacrifice fly from Adam Clark helped OCU to a 7-1 advantage. Holden Lyons allowed one run in the top of the seventh but retired the side and gave the Stars the 7-2 victory. Starting pitcher Matt Marsh allowed one run on three hits and struck out eight in five innings of work to pick up the win. Lyons struck out three in two innings of relief. Smith drove in an OCU run in the bottom of the first and evened the score at 1-1. Robert Morris scored two runs in the second and another in the third and took a 4-1 advantage. In the bottom of the third, Mason Toole doubled to left and drove in Josh Dickey and Smith to cut the Robert Morris lead to 4-3. Smith and Toole each slugged two-run home runs in the fifth and gave OCU a 7-4 lead. The Stars gave up a run the top of the seventh but Halbert was able to retire the side and give OCU the 7-5 victory. Cale Russell struck out three in five innings of work and picked up the win. Halbert made his first pitching appearance of the season and earned a save. OCU will return to action against Robert Morris in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
