THE CHANGE WE'RE IN

We are all aware that our planet is going through a radical transformation, brought by the exponential growth of technology.
Communication, health, environment, education, transportation... people are creating unimaginable solutions and scenarios for these elds. We need to discuss and learn how to use technology for our own sake. We need to recreate ourselves, to reframe our everyday jobs, our everyday life, the way we do everything. For the better. On a Thursday night of November 2013, a group of people got together at Flags HQ to think about the power that technology has to turn people, objects and ideas into networks. Presented by CLAN, Blending Sources brought FLAG to setup a 4-hour immersion with the help of our friends at Mesa&Cadeira. The purpose was to expand the participants perception about how to make creative use of technology. The inWhat were presenting here is a D-I-Y guide and an invitation: a guide for you to reproduce it at your own pace, time and necessity; an invitation for you to jump inside this universe of possibilities with us. tense dive into this universe of possibilities helped people to deconstruct and reframe them into meaningful, useful and beautiful ideas.

BLENDING SOURCES IS BASED ON THE INTERNET OF THINGS

The Internet of things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes scenarios where everyday physical objects are connected to the Internet and are able to identify themselves to other devices. More objects are becoming embedded with sensors and gaining the ability to communicate. Whats revolutionary in all this is that these physical information systems are now beginning to be deployed, and some of them even work largely without human intervention. As consumers we're already connected and, through our content, creating many new informational territories and social layers. Our access to devices made this possible. This was the starting point for making things happen. Anarconomy Predicted by CIFS (Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies), Anarconomy is a new wave of non-commercial, opensource alternatives to commercial prod-

ucts and services. They are often free offerings created and distributed in voluntary networks run on anarchic principles, and often work in a manner opposite to traditional economic theory. It is moving out of the internet and is changing economy in the physical world when we can make our own consumer goods on 3D printers based on open source blueprints. Betapreneurship Coined by UK forecasters LS:N Global, Betapreneurship is about new entrepreneurial mindset found on contemporary entrepreneurs: its about an understanding of business that is formed entirely by knowledge of the web, the digital world and the power of launching ideas in beta mode. Betapreneurs rely on online communities to beta test ideas quickly and cost-e#ectively. If audiences respond well, those ideas are expanded. If not, they can be quickly collapsed, minimising

losses. It's a far more e$cient way of testing new market opportunities, and is enabled by digital technology. How the IoT happens 1. Sensors capturing data that is most relevant to us (mics, thermometers, IMUs, distance meters, geolocalization). 2. Actuators to touch our senses or extend our capabilities (lights, speakers, servos, heater). 3. Local computing, preprocessing information locally and giving data identity, i.e. Electronic Product Code (ePC). 4. Remote computing (cloud) to gather and redistribute data in a service environment. 5. Data Visualization as an approach to read Big Data properly. The Required Mindset 1. Openness and Combination. One of the best ways to create new ideas is to share and merge the ones we have. Good ideas come from abundance, rather than scarcity. 2. Inclusive Value. Must be good and easy for everybody. The more people use something, the more valuable it becomes. 3. Fluently Human. When technology is applied focusing or mirroring a true human need, the more compelling it becomes.

EVERYTHING AROUND US HAS THE POSSIBILITY TO MORPH INTO SOMETHING ELSE.

With the right tools and mindset we can give a new use and a unusual purpose for the most ordinary things. The immersion into this universe of possibilities will help you to reframe your perspective about things of everyday life by learning through exercises new ways to deconstruct certainties and apply technology to create original things. In the following pages youll nd the process to unlock these ideas.

Important mind notes Time keeping Keep time short to keep your synapses owing and ideas coming. Time is not always a good friend when brainstorming, so put yourselves into a real working situation. Fun Enjoy the process, have a fun time. The creative process works when no one owns the idea.% This open source mindset leads every individual idea to meet and mate with other ways of thinking for a greater concept.% Mating ideas = mating people, it's just an obvious conclusion: it'll be fun :)

Materials you are going to need For creating ideas Paper (A4 and A3), pen, post its and a stopwatch. For your prototype Cardboard, glue, scissors color pens, color papers and LEGO (optional). Optional technology APIs, light sensor, microphone, pressure sensors, presence detector sensor, RFID, servomotor, speakers. If youre already familiar with eletronic components, use them - its great to see things coming to life. A Creative Matrix WHY. Being creatures of habit, we humans have some mental models and perceptions of reality that help us through

our day. The habitual is automatic. The unknown requires attention. Will your idea help people enhance, shake or resolve their habits? How will your idea make a di#erence in someone's life? This is the time to explore possibilities for engagement, inspiration, immersion and experience. WHAT. Having your goals dened, some questions must be answered: What kind of data or information will you need to make your idea happen? Is there a specic format that may help people to get engaged? What APIs that already exist may help you achieve your goals? What is the best way to connect them to make the magic happen? HOW. Last, but not least, comes the time to make the bridge between the intangibility of data and the tangibility of physical interaction. This is where your idea comes to life. What are the devices, the tools, the interface will you need to make it happen? How will you connect them to deliver a great result? Build your Creative Matrix using this model. WHAT WEVE LEARNED

! 2014 9 23 "" Blending Sources. An Immersion into hacked possibilities.

The everyday is a great source of inspiration. Great things and ideas dont always come from grandiosity and may be hidden in what we consider ordinary. The more we become mindful about what is around us, the better we can recreate it. Technology is an amazing way to enable ideas, but should not be the idea itself. Thinking about why doing something is as important as thinking about how to develop it. Dont be afraid if you cant write lines of codes: exchange ideas with coders, programmers and technologists. The more you use technology, greater intimacy and intuitive knowledge you get. For example, tools like FitBit, Nike FuelBand and Nike Plus are amazing connectors of physical and digital world, creating data from your body. Download and play with applications. Explore websites. Read about the novelties. Innovation rewards the curious.

"How to implement what is experienced here in our everyday life? I guess if we were a little more direct and bold, things would work out ne. We need to educate ourselves into this: do not think too much, do not say no, do not resist. Being part of a group helps a lot, because it's much easier. Don't be judgemental: just go for it!" Rafael Lopes, Unilever "The whole process is great because it turns not so obvious things into something tangible in a very short period of time. It opened my perception to references that we have in everyday life, which seems trivial, but can be converted into useful things. Also, because we have short time, a faster thinking is required, barriers and lters are taken away, and it prevents overthinking, which can annihilate an idea." Fbio Couto, Colletivo "The issue of time and the mix of people from di#erent areas and backgrounds was amazing. My group had people that worked with advertising, technology, programming, gaming, art. The coolest thing about it was to have a format where di#erent universes are mixed to design more creative ideas." Tatiana Lemos, Nestl "The accelerated process allows you to be more intuitive, random, fun and able to apply unltered thinking. It is necessary for us so we reach things that make sense later. This sets the beta mode which we live in, and what it takes you out of a linear process of thinking. Having little time eventually lead us to connect the dots and ideas more quickly, which would not exist without pressure." Rodrigo Hurtado, Pong Dynasty "Having the opportunity to join a process where an idea is implemented in minutes within a collaborative environment, brought me the feeling that sharing ideas makes the world bigger than we perceive, and things can be greater than they are. Something like: Hey, let's think of new things that can inuence others and change this reality."

GOING DEEPER

WHEN LIVING THE PROCESS OF BLENDING SOURCES

we discovered ourselves deeply connected with these three concepts. For each one, we curated a number of references you can see in the next pages. Go deeper and continue to acquire knowledge about it. The Makers Era Being a maker is a statement of life hacking. Not just building things with a DIY perspective but bringing this mindset to life. Blending physical and digital sources, reframing possibilities, being an active part of the processThere is no enough time to drop ideas and discuss them: let's prototype! Fluently Human P o s t - h u m a n s , h u m a n 2 . 0 , p ro t o cyborgs you can call it whatever you want. But there's no denial: our bodies & minds are being measured, dataqualied, upgraded, taken elsewhere. It's

an era to rediscover ourselves and rethink technology as a catalyst of our humanity. Reframing current models There's a sync delay in contemporaneity: the velocity of technology and innovation and its potential to facilitate, predict and gather makes it harder and harder everyday for traditional models to keep up with the change. In this scenario, reframing ethos is a condition to survive.
