Catherine Jobe Reflective Practice Guidance Logs

Part 1 Objective Observation

(Clearly identify the problem. Examine the context of the problem)

Date: November 18, 2013. M and B were running back and forth between the couches. B ran into the couch hard and it turned over onto its side, with B tumbling over with it.

Part 2 Decision
(Clearly identify the guidance strategy and state why the chosen strategy is appropriate for this child and the situation)

The guidance strategy I chose to use in this situation is Setting Limits. The limits that I talked to the children about are to Be Safe and Respect the Environment. I chose this strategy because I felt that it was important to remind the children to play safely and to use walking feet in the classroom; I also wanted to tell them not to be too rough with the furnishings, so that they would last a long time and provide a comfortable place for them to sit during quiet time. Another strategy I used was an I-Message. Adults influence children by stating their expectations for desired behaviour and helping children understand that there are boundaries, or limits, on behaviour. Authoritative caregivers understand the importance of proper boundaries in relationships in general, and appropriate limits in adult-child relationships in particular. They figure out and clearly communicate limits that will be most helpful in encouraging children to behave appropriately. (Guidance of Young Children, pages 118-119).

Part 3 Actions
(Clearly discuss your actions (what you did and said), the childs response and the results of the guidance strategy)

I walked over to B quickly to make sure he wasnt hurt; thankfully he was just fine. I set the couch upright. I reminded both children of the classrooms safety limit, telling them We use walking feet inside. Then I used an I- message, I was worried when you ran into the couch like that because I was afraid you would get hurt. I also told the children that they needed to treat the couches gently so they wouldnt get ruined. Miss Gowry was nearby and she told B, You frightened Miss Catherine and I, we thought you were hurt. You need to play safely. Bs eyes widened as he listened to what we were saying to him. I noticed that he used his walking feet indoors for the rest of the day, as did the rest of the children.

Part 4 Reflection
(Clearly discuss your strengths and needs and the changes that you would make if needed)

Strengths

Needs

I investigated quickly to ensure that B wasnt hurt. I reminded the children of classroom limits. (Be safe walking feet inside.) I used an I-message to help B better understand the consequences of his actions.

I think it would be a good idea to post the classroom limits on the wall, using images and just a few words so that it would be easily understood by the children.

Discuss the changes that you would make and why you would make them. I think that the couches being placed across from each other created a tempting situation for the children. We could try to prevent this from happening again by making sure the couches are arranged in a different manner. Supervising ECE Signature
