DESCRIPTION
ECO BOX is the tertiary treatment system for the final disinfection and filtration of treated water. The system
consists of a water storage compartment, a sodium hypochlorite injection devise for disinfection and a final
filtration with sand and activated carbons filters. The water storage tank is made in polyethylene and designed for
underground installation, while filters and electromechanical equipment are housed in a steel cabinet which can
be positioned above ground for easy maintenance and operation. Following the disinfection and filtration stage,
water can be re-utilized for a variety of different uses e.g. irrigation, safe disposal to the environment (sea, rivers
or lakes), or any other industrial and commercial utilization in line with the provision of international standards.

STORAGE TANK The storage chamber, made of a single piece of seamless polyethylene, is the tank where
treated water is mixed with the disinfectant solution (sodium hypochlorite) to remove any
pathogens still present in the outflow of an activated sludge plant.
DISINFECTION Sodium hypochlorite is pumped into the storage tank by means of a membrane-dosing pump.
The storage tank is designed with an appropriate volume to optimize the contact between
treated water and disinfectant reagent for a time period necessary to complete the
disinfection of the water.
FILTRATION The storage chamber is also utilized to feed water to the pressurized filtration stage. A
self-priming pump connected to a piping system, is utilized to feed water to the filters at a
INSTALLAZIONE pre-determined pressure.
The pump is lodge inside the steel cabinet and anchor to the floor cabinet to avoid vibrations.
The pump’s discharge line is connected to the feed line of the pressure filters. The feed line
of the filters is a manifold with manually operated isolation valves to allow forward feed to the
filters or, when necessary, backwashing of the filters. Programmed periodical backwashing
of the filters is necessary to maintain their efficiency.
The on/off operation of the pump is controlled by level sensors placed in the collection
chamber. The pump is activated when the water level rises to a point where there is sufficient
water to make operation of the pump worthwhile and it de-activates as soon as the water
level falls below the level of sustainable operation.

Filtered water is generally conveyed into a final storage tank or directly connected to the
irrigation system. |Back-flushing water is instead returned to the inlet of the primary treatment
system.

All these electro-mechanical parts are operated by an electrical panel in the ECO BOX.

INSTALLATION
EXCAVATION Dig a hole of appropriate dimensions. The bottom of the excavation must be leveled
and compacted with a 10 cm layer of fine sand (grain size 0-5 mm).

PIPING AND Connect the inlet pipe of the contact chamber to the outlet of the secondary treatment system.
FITTINGS Install the piping for the dosing pump to the feed line from disinfectant storage tank.
Position the self-priming pump on a horizontal surface, Connect outlet from the self-priming
pump to the inlet manifold of the filter.
Connect the outlet of the filter to the final receiving vessel.

BACKFILLING Fill the tanks with clean water before backfilling to avoid collapse of the polyethylene
structure. Once the tank is full, dump sand around it and level.
For a walk-on solution build a 5 cm thick light concrete layer on top of the tank and finish
with a 40 cm thick soil. For a drive-on solution a reinforced concrete slab is required to
protect the tank.
Accessible manholes are required for inspection and maintenance.

ELECTRICAL Connect the dosing pump and the self- priming pump to the power supply (as appropriate
CONNECTIONS for your model of pump) and ensure that the connections are water tight.

COMMISSIONING After completion of installation, check that the dosing pump and the self- priming pump are
both working correctly.

MAINTENANCE

CHECKS AND Periodically check that no large bodies obstruct the inlet of the disinfection chamber by opening the
MAINTENANCE inspection ports. Similarly check that the out flow of filtered water is free from suspended particles.

Regular filters backwashing with clean water is required to keep the efficiency of the filtration process.
The operator must check that there is enough disinfectant solution in the storage tank.

Maintenance of the dosing pump and the self-priming pump is required on yearly basis.
