Akzo Nobel India Limited

History

AkzoNobel is known as much for its innovation and creativity as for its products and people. Underlying all these have been the inherent values of dedication, commitment, trust and responsibility that have shaped the organisation through the decades Let us turn the hands of time to some hundred years ago; the year is 1911, when the ICI Group commenced its operations in India. Brunner Mond & Co, one of the four companies that combined in 1926 to form ICI in the UK, opened a trading office in Calcutta (now Kolkata) to sell alkalis and dyes. In 1923, it became Brunner Mond & Co (India) and, in 1929, the name was changed to Imperial Chemical Industries (India) Ltd. This was followed by a period of sustained expansion, diversification and growth leading to 1954, with the formation of Indian Explosives Ltd, promoted jointly by ICI PLC and the Government of India. Its name was changed to IEL Limited in 1985 and to ICI

India Limited in 1989. The Government of Indias holding became nil in 2003. Along with the other group companies of ICI PLC in India, it sponsored the establishment of the ICI India Research and Technology Centre in Thane in 1976. Over the years, it saw more consolidation, restructuring and divestment. The highlights of this period include the merger of three other group companies of ICI plc in IndiaThe Alkali and Chemical Corporation of India Ltd, Chemicals and Fibres India Limited and Crescent Dyes and Chemicals Limited in 1984. Nalco Chemicals India Ltd was formed in 1987. A paints plant as well as a polyurethanes systems house were commissioned at Thane in 1997; another paints plant was commissioned at Mohali near Chandigarh; the Uniqema Innovation Centre opened at Thane in the following year. There are many more stories of growth and expansion of products and markets, of people and their dreams, with a fair mix of re-structuring and divesments. Then came 2 January 2008, the day Akzo Nobel NV became owner of the entire equity share capital of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., the holding company of ICI India Limited, through a scheme of arrangement under section 425 of the UK Companies Act 1985. The name of the Company was changed to its present name, Akzo Nobel India Limited, in February 2010. The businesses currently in its portfolio are Coatings and Specialty Chemicals. We end this historic account with a significant footnote: In 2012, under the scheme of amalgamation sanctioned by the High Courts of Karnataka, Mumbai and Kolkata, Akzo Nobel Car Refinishes India Private Limited, Akzo Nobel Coatings India Private Limited and Akzo Nobel Chemicals (India) Limited were amalgamated with the Company, with effect from 18 May. The merger has created a strong entity. Akzo Nobel India is now ready to unleash the Power of One!

Caring for life

Environmentalists across the globe warn us that if proper care is not extended to the earth and its precious resources, the world could simply come to a halt. For Akzo Nobel India these are not just random voices of alarmists that can be easily dismissed. On the contrary, taking care of the planet and being committed to sustainability top its priorities. Backed by a strong sense of responsibility as corporate citizens, Akzo Nobel India (ANI) uses innovative production methods that underscore its basic belief in caring for life. The Company has created five pillars of sustainabilityenergy, transport, waste, product and community. Take the example of the dramatic reduction of energy consumption at the factory in Thane, Maharashtra, where roof sheets were replaced, with opaque sheets changed to transparent ones. Or visit Krishna, Hyderabad, which was declared the best paints factory in India. The technology used here is the most contemporary in the world, with the lowest water consumption as well as the lowest consumption of energy per unit. Expanding this factory has also helped in reducing primary freight carbon dioxide emissions by reducing the transportation distance to service the south India market. The Company is considering the use of wind energy, wastewater and rainwater across its plants in India and is also working with its suppliers to recycle the plastic that is used for storing its products. A project to make containers out of recycled plastic is under way. Aware that saving water is of paramount importance in todays world, AkzoNobel is constantly working towards reducing its consumption. For instance, latex, which is a key raw material for ANI, has a certain quantity of water. The liquid level has been reduced and the solid content increased so that water does not have to be transported. ANI is working with design houses to re-engineer its packaging containers to reduce up to 10% of plastic weight and is also exploring possibilities of moving away from rigid plastic to flexible plastic, which will further reduce the quantity of plastic used. The Company has integrated sustainability into every area of its business and was the first to adopt a 100% lead and chrome-free formulation in its industrial paints.

Health and safety are two values that drive AkzoNobel in all its initiatives. It takes on challenging targets to meet its Health, Safety, Environment & Security objectives. ANI uses the behaviour base safety or BBS model. Simply put, this is a formal system of people auditing each other by just observing their colleagues, identifying the right behaviour that they demonstrate as well as the unsafe behaviour. The model then positively reinforces the good behaviour and seeks commitment for change of behaviour if it does not meet the BBS standard. As the Company grows, both in volumes and markets, it is essential that the focus is on Operational Eco Efficiency (OEE) performance. ANI has its own eco-efficiency strategy that encourages the finding of new ways to do things. It is committed to pioneering people, products and performance, offering a chance to employees to nurture and grow to their full potential. The intent is make the year 2012 equal to 2015 in terms of the waste the Company produces, the water it uses and the energy it consumes. Beyond budgets and the bottom line, the emphasis is on finding more innovative ways of consuming less water, using alternate energy models and generating less waste. Or, in other words, offering sustainable solutions and products. Indeed, for Akzo Nobel India, the future is now, and it comes coated in various shades of hope and opportunities.

Sustainability Products
The key words here are responsible care. Elaborate that with equally important words such as conservation of energy, research, development and innovation and you get a clear picture of what drives AkzoNobel. Here is a Company which realises that its vision for a green tomorrow has little or no meaning unless it is incorporated in all its products. So be it chemicals or coatings, the intent is to ensure that the focus remains on creating a healthy planet. Alcoguard H 5240, for instance, is produced using hybrid technology developed by AkzoNobel that combines natural (plant-based) materials (selected polysaccharides) with petrochemical materials (synthetic monomers) and is based on over 60% renewable resources. The full and rapid biodegradability of the polysaccharides contained in this product makes it an environmentally friendly alternative (with a significantly lower carbon footprint) to traditional synthetic polymers. It has even been granted Design for Environment (DfE) certification by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Indeed, the Company continues to use its research and development base to bring consumers new products with improved performance features and products for special applications. Take the example of Dulux Super Smooth Colour Bright, an interior paint that produces greater light in a room. According to independent evaluation tests conducted at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in the UK, a room decorated with LumiTecTM-based interior emulsion paints can save up to 20% artificial lighting energy, thereby making it a sustainable product solution with energy cost savings. Dulux Super Smooth Colour Bright uses this technology to reduce the amount of light absorbed by the painted surface and to reflect up to twice as much light around the room, compared to conventional emulsion paints of a similar hue and chroma. Then there is Dulux Guardian, an anti-bacterial paint, which has been launched with a view to create healthy living conditions at home. Guardian is the only paint in India to be certified by an independent laboratory for protection against six bacteria that cause health problems such as
