NOTE: If the sequence of thinking that follows allows you to find points of resonance in your own life (past,

present, and future),

then it will have fulfilled its purpose. If you are able to apply these points of resonant knowledge and moments of resonant experience
to uncover maximum potential and maximum function in your unique creative expression, no further technology will be necessary.

THE POWER OF RESONANCE

In every human being, regardless of background or place
of origin, there are moments of time when a powerful built-in
mechanism of the human mind1 comes into action that leads
to a state of optimal experience. This mechanism is called
resonance -- it is central to every other concept in the
framework that is about to be revealed.
During moments of resonance, a person is markedly
present, possesses maximal use of his or her facilities,
experiences a temporary dissolution of concerns and worries,
benefits from an almost complete dissolving of the ego, and
is maximally enjoying whatever he or she is doing. A mind
operating in resonance functions at a higher energy level;
therefore, a mind in resonance generates more power, and
therefore more value for itself and for others.
Resonance arises from a state of fascination with this
life. When resonant, a human feels an inherent richness in
the world, from which follows a certain intrigue that prompts
him or her to both explore and take action. It is also an
experience of ‘flow’ or ‘correctness’2, where a human feels
most aligned with purpose and task.

THE ORIGIN OF RESONANCE

"Trust thyself; every heart vibrates to that iron string!"
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Resonance can be derived from several different lenses, or

perspectives, based on different knowledge backgrounds. References
to it as a concept are scattered throughout the written texts and words
uttered from men and women in different walks of life, although the
terms for it vary. The choice of the word resonance in this framework
comes from the amplified state of consciousness that it describes and
1
And, possibly every living thing… though obviously the being’s ability to analyze
and act on this response will vary widely. For the purpose of this document, we shall
limit ourselves to human consciousness only.
2
The words "flow" and "optimal experience" may invoke cues toward the work of
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and his research into optimal states of consciousness, living
an enjoyable life, and an evolving consciousness. Csikszentmihalyi's work created an
important bridge for this work (as did the work of other authors and researchers) and
the states he describes arise naturally through the discovery of resonance (e.g.,
resonance gives rise to flow, but flow does not necessarily give rise to resonance).
Thus, the two works have a symbiotic relationship.

has several analogues in the physical world (e.g., resonant structures

in chemistry, resonant frequency of matter, acoustic intensification,
etc.).
Resonance points to a fundamental characteristic of
consciousness, but individuality plays an important role in determining
points of resonance. Knowledge and experience are two fundamental
-- and highly interrelated -- elements that give rise to the exploration of
resonance. These elements illustrate the personalized nature of
resonance and how it unfolds in different ways to different individuals.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
"I pored over the books of all the sages from Morienus, Aristotle, and Plato
downward,
but yet I went wrong, until, by trial and mistakes, I at length discovered the
truth."
-- Albertus Magnus

These moments in time, when the

powerful built-in mechanism of resonance
comes into action, are phenomena worthy EXPERIENCE
of deep study. An individual, after
thorough investigation, can recognize
resonance in a series of personal KNOWLEDGE
experiences that have occurred
throughout his or her life. Furthermore,
an individual can find that certain knowledge can invoke resonance,
at either the moment one learns the knowledge or at the moment one
applies the knowledge. For knowledge of any form is just experience
captured into a transmittable form (on the learning side). Furthermore,
knowledge can lead to a series of different experiences when the
bearer produces action in the world (on the application side).
This relationship between experience and knowledge is crucial to
our unfolding framework. Experience gives rise to knowledge and
knowledge gives rise to new experiences. When combined with
resonance, ordinary knowledge and ordinary experiences take on
powerful qualities. Thus, resonant experience gives rise to resonant
knowledge; likewise, resonant knowledge gives rise to resonant
experiences. The evolution of this important resonant
knowledge/experience relationship is explored later in the section
titled, "Resonant Language".
In the framework of our project, the moments of resonant
experience are labeled "Golden Moments". During a Golden Moment
all thought activity arising from knowledge appears to cease within the
human mind, while total focus and awareness are applied, typically via
one or more of the five senses. In fact, knowledge, in this instance,
actually reverses its typical role: normally knowledge gives rise to
thought and/or action, but in a Golden Moment thought activity and

3

action become still. Thus, it gives the human mind the quiet it needs
to absorb this current interaction between human and world by
subtracting all non-resonant information.3 For a Golden Moment is
truly a conversation, a dialogue between human and world, and the
mind must be fully present, attentive, and free of distraction. The
content of this conversation is explored elsewhere (see the Deiforming
project). Nevertheless, new knowledge is being transferred into the
human mind, yet it requires the healthy collaboration of past learning
to allow clear transmission.4
The knowledge that invokes, permits, and advances resonance5
in an individual is termed "Resonant Knowledge", which
encapsulates the activity that arises in consciousness from interaction
with the knowledge. Just as Golden Moments stand in sharp contrast
to other experiences in a person's life, Resonant Knowledge gives rise
to an important, distinctive experience in the individual when the
knowledge is learned (acquisition) or when the knowledge is applied
(application). When an individual encounters Resonant Knowledge
(i.e., knowledge that causes resonance in him/her) in the learning
stage, it is easy to recognize by the temporary pause in the stream of
consciousness as resonance sets in, just like in a Golden Moment.6
When an experience that invokes resonance (a Golden Moment)
occurs, if the individual has a way to capture the experience into a
transmittable form (other terms for this act are “encoded”,
“collapsed”, “distilled”) for easy retrieval and subsequent use, it will be
of high value to the individual and it is probable it will be of value to
others. The transmittable form becomes knowledge and the form it
takes is highly significant.7
RESONANT LANGUAGE
"A scientist worthy of his name, above all a mathematician, experiences in
his work the same impression as an artist; his pleasure is as great and of
the same nature."
-- Henri Poincaire

This is known as the Meaningful Pause. This and other important elements of
Golden Moments are explored elsewhere.
4
Advanced techniques in the recognition, uncovering, and use of Golden Moments for
the benefit of the individual and of society is the domain of the Deiforming project,
the work of co-author Christopher Galtenberg.
5
Knowledge invoking resonance in an individual is a complex topic that is explored
elsewhere. A theoretical scientific framework gives application to this important
event and leads to a new theory of creativity and innovation.
6
Advanced techniques for recognition, modification, transformation, and application
of Resonant Knowledge are the domain of Static Pattern Engineering, work done
by co-author Joel Kotarski.
7
This is about to be explored but must be noted now: The transmittable form an
experience takes is completely influenced by the knowledge a person possesses. For
instance: the native language of the person is knowledge that is used to express the
experience.

In our framework, language serves as a critical two-fold

mechanism: it converts experience into explicit, transmittable
knowledge and transmits knowledge to invoke experiences. Language
can take many forms, and, in this framework, fits this broader
definition:

A language arises from a set of elements allowing

transmission (expression) and reception of knowledge
and/or experience.
This description of language as the intermediate between knowledge
and experience implies another important element: there is the
possibility of a Resonant Language as an intermediary agent between
Resonant Knowledge and Resonant Experience.
From the outset, it is important to point out that the learning of
language itself is made possible through a combination of knowledge
and experience, where the language is usually acquired through a
blending of both experiencing the language in motion as well as
learning explicit rules about the language (usually through another
language, such as English).
Nonetheless, we can represent any form of language as a set of
knowledge that facilitates a unique way of expressing human
experiences. Although written and spoken languages come to mind
most readily when one hears the term "language", there are numerous
examples of languages that meet the criteria "allowing expression and
reception of knowledge and experience": musical language, visual
arts, dramatic expression, dance, mathematics, engineering diagrams,
and computer programming. Notice that all of these example
languages have an associated set of prerequisite knowledge: once a
person acquires this knowledge, expression and reception via the
language can occur.

RESONANCE AS A CONCEPT

RESONANT RESONANT RESONANT

KNOWLEDGE LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE

This relationship between the requisite knowledge of a language

and communication in that language when combined with the concept
of resonance leads to the essential element of Resonant Language.
If a person resonates with the knowledge (or set of experiences it
produces) that constructs a language fitting this broader definition,
then he or she will express a resonant experience more powerfully
through this resonant language than via any other language. Using
one's resonant language(s), it is possible to express a resonant
experience with less friction; hence, these experiences can be
transmitted as knowledge to invoke (potentially resonant) experiences
in others.

EXCHANGES OF VALUE
"All the sciences are connected; they lend each other material aid as parts
of one great whole. Each does its own work, not for itself alone, but for the
other parts. . . . No part can attain its proper result separately; since all are
parts of one and the same complete wisdom."
-- Francis Bacon

In any form of human interaction/transaction, there is an

exchange of value between two or more parties. This pattern
encompasses every activity that a person engages in throughout his or
her life. Central to this paradigm of resonance is a belief that any
exchange of value involving resonance between two or more parties
will be of the highest value to those involved. Furthermore, thanks to
resonance, the value created by the exchange will most likely be of
value to parties even outside of the exchange.
At first glance, this might appear to be an idealistic picture of
human interaction. Nevertheless, we can certainly agree that there

have been, in the past, human exchanges (dialogues, debates,

relationships, creative collaborations, alliances, combined efforts) of
high value. Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that the members
involved in these exchanges were resonant, if not with each other,
then at least with the subject at hand? We believe so.
We will study resonance itself, with the firm belief that from
any instance of resonance comes an output of value.
With this belief in mind, we will seek to invoke, permit, and
advance resonance to spark exchanges of value with increasing value
for the individual and the community.8 It is possible to immediately
enhance any exchanges of value via the injection of the elements of
resonance: resonant knowledge, resonant experiences, and resonant
language.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

"Knowledge is a polite word for dead but not yet buried imagination."
-- E.E. Cummings

It is important to note a common occurrence: Golden Moments9

are not automatically encapsulated into a transmittable form.
Therefore, they are often forgotten or buried, preventing immediate
and useful access. This is one corner of the problem.
When a person is able to encode Golden Moments (resonant
experiences) into a transmittable form, it is possible to analyze them,
and then to draw meaning from this information. This is the beginning
of a process of forming self-generated resonant knowledge, in which
the individual generates knowledge from personal experiences
involving resonance.
In the process of learning that occurs throughout a person's life,
he or she is drawn to certain "pieces" of an area of study that cause
resonance in consciousness. In these moments, an individual's
attention is being hooked by externally generated resonant
knowledge. Because the resonant knowledge is based on the
reception of experiences of other people (in some cases, the period of
this experience encompasses decades or even centuries), it is
"externally generated".
Yet, ironically, just as Golden Moments are often forgotten or
buried from immediate and useful access, it is quite typical that this
acquired (externally-generated) resonant knowledge is captured into a
larger “common collection” (into a repository, like a book or university
8
One can certainly observe these optimal exchanges of value (via resonance) in
categories other than the interpersonal. This distinction is important to keep in mind.
9
Our term “Golden Moments” encapsulates both fascination and resonance, which
always occur over a period of time--thus a reference to time is appropriate.
Bachelard used the term reverie (specifically, poetic reverie) to delineate this mental
aspect, though he often linked this to oneirism and songes.

class). Therefore, these bits of resonant knowledge are often buried,

preventing immediate and useful access. This is another corner of the
problem, for often our practice of collecting the knowledge of others
(our learning) is far from ideal.
One may link these two corners of the problem using this
common factor: in consciousness, the resonant
knowledge/experiences are separated from each other due to
ineffective knowledge/experiences. In fact, when an individual is able
to effectively resolve this problem, amazing results appear in the flow
of consciousness.
Here is a reformulation of the central problem we are seeking to
resolve:

We recognize that we are bound to a flow of experience

dictated by time, but this linear flow of experience/learning
can quickly bury points of resonant knowledge and
moments of resonant experience.

This central problem arises from this root cause: By not being
aware of resonance, a person often enjoys the improved flow of
consciousness but may not separate out the knowledge and/or
experience for future use. Over time, the point of resonant knowledge
or moment of resonant experience may be forgotten. Therefore, the
person may not return to this experience or knowledge, which prevents
a maximal exchange of value in the flow of experience. This less than
optimal experience perpetuates the burying of points of resonance in
the line of experience, due to the highly probable increase of non-
resonant experiences and non-resonant knowledge, thus creating a
perpetual cycle.

THE IDEAL FINAL RESULT

"No single thing abides, but all things flow.
Fragment to fragment clings; all things thus grow
Until we know and name them. By degrees
They melt and are no more the things we know."
-- Lucretius

It is time for a thought experiment: Imagine for a moment that it

were possible to resolve this central problem… Specifically, what if we
could find a solution that allows any person to identify/recognize
moments of resonant experience (Golden Moments) and points of
resonant knowledge from the past or arising right now (in the
present)? What if another component of this solution allowed the
person to encapsulate the resonant knowledge/experience into a form
meaningful to him or her and also in a form that was transmittable to
others in an ideal manner? What if these transmittable slices of
resonant knowledge or resonant experience (Golden Moments) invoked
resonance in other individuals?

In summary, what if the solution permitted, advanced, and

invoked resonance and therefore was a link to optimal
exchanges of value based on resonance?

To illustrate the principle of resonance to yourself even now,

take a full moment, a meaningful pause, to clear your mind of all
distractions (other threads of thought) and come fully present and
aware… . . .
Now, in this state of mind, reread the above paragraph. While
reading, take time for a meaningful pause after each question above
to imagine this solution. Perhaps your mind will build a solution out of
your own (dead but not yet buried) resonant experiences and
resonant knowledge from your own life.

PROLOGUE
If this sequence of thinking has allowed you to find points of
resonance in your own life (past, present, and future), then it has
fulfilled its purpose. If you are able to apply these points of resonant
knowledge and moments of resonant experience to uncover maximum
potential and maximum function in your unique creative expression, no
further technology will be necessary.
The next step is a series of exchanges of value with the world
based on resonance. If during the envisioning of the Ideal Final Result,

9

a unique solution to the central problem springs to mind based on your

own resonant knowledge and/or experiences, then perhaps you are
ready to implement it10. As of this writing, we are aware of no current
project or organization for bringing about resolution of this newly
discovered problem other than the Praesentia project that is described
in another paper, The Platform for Praesentia, a Channel for Resonant
Implementation.11 Praesentia is a robust and complete framework for
solving the central problem (and root cause) by approaching the Ideal
Final Result described in this paper. It is based on extensive research
in the domains of resonant experience and resonant knowledge and
makes maximal use of recent advances in human- and computer-based
technology.
Nonetheless, the goal of this paper is to introduce the reader to
resonance, which will never be "owned" by one group or project (it is
simply impossible). Instead, it is already within everyone's grasp.
There are several ways to complete this goal:
•Spread this paper, but only if it brought you value. It is
"copylefted" for free distribution: just read the Design Science
License available at http://staticpatternengineering.net/dsl.txt
before distribution.
•Start using resonance in your own life right now, through
whatever means appear to you (this might be a clue to your
Resonant Language), and inject it into every moment, where
you can always exchange value with the world. Start using the
phrases, “I resonate with ____”, and “I don’t resonate with that.”
Watch and see how quickly you both utilize and reject
knowledge now. With this effortless mindset, efficacy is already
yours.
•Start a project to spread awareness of resonance in your
local community or to multiple communities. Feel free to
contact the authors for collaborative assistance. There is no
competition for resonance -- it is a resource not subject to
scarcity.
•Employ resonance in your personal creations and realize the
creative potential you have to fulfill your purpose or life's work
using the Resonant Language that unfolds.

Ideal Final Result is a term from TRIZ, the Theory of Innovative Problem Solving
which originated from Henry Altschuller in the former USSR. So are the activities of
Correct Statement of Problem and Root Cause Analysis, which were used in the
"Description of the Problem" section.
11
Praesentia is the merging of two projects based on resonance and linked by
resonance itself. These two projects are Static Pattern Engineering (a
theory/process of innovative collaborative human creativity) and Deiforming (a
process for uncovering/reclaiming maximal use of consciousness). For information on
Praesentia, Deiforming, or Static Pattern Engineering, contact Christopher Galtenberg
