heard much from Charlize Theron
lately, but now we learn she has
pulled out of “The Tourist” and
Angelina Jolie will replace her. It
is not clear what happened; if I
find out, I’ll tell you. An
interesting aside about Charlize is
how many times she has changed
her hair color. One never knows
whether it will be blonde, brown,
or black. Perhaps she feels
brunette is villainous and blonde is
virtuous. However, or whatever,
she’s a helluva fine actress.

active in the business. He is just

come along. His last outing -- “Las

NAMES BRMC’S STEVEN HERRMANN, M.D.,
TO ‘LEADING PHYSICIANS’ PUBLICATION
Bradford Regional Medical Center’s (BRMC’s) Steven
Herrmann, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.S.E., medical director of
the hospital’s Cardiovascular Services and the region’s only
board-certified physician in cardiovascular imaging, has been
named to the 2009 edition of “The Leading Physicians of the
World” by the International Association of Cardiologists (IAC).
This will be the fifth time - and the third this year - that
Dr. Herrmann has been selected to a publication spotlighting
the best cardiologists in the country and abroad. Dr.
Herrmann, who leads BRMC’s Heart Center, works to provide
the highest levels of cardiac care possible for his patients.
“The IAC highlights and profiles the world’s top
cardiologists,” Teresa Cartier, the association’s assistant
director, said when announcing Dr. Herrmann’s inclusion to
the publication.
“This latest award shows the level of professional
achievement Dr. Herrmann has been known for among both
his peers and patients,” said BRMC President/CEO George E.
Leonhardt.
“We’re extremely pleased to have a specialist of Dr.
Herrmann’s caliber in our region. Someone of his credentials is
typically in a larger metropolitan area,” Mr. Leonhardt noted.
When learning about his inclusion to the publication, Dr.
Herrmann said, “It’s always nice to be recognized, but I have to
say this selection also gives credit to my talented and
dedicated staff at BRMC. They diligently work everyday to
deliver the best possible cardiac care in a two-state region.”
BRMC’s Heart Center, designated a Center of
Excellence, is located on the second floor of the hospital’s
Outpatient Services Center which opened in January 2007. It
provides comprehensive cardiovascular care and services, plus
a wide range of diagnostic services in the Imaging Services
Department which houses a state-of-the-art cardiac
catheterization suite.
Since being named medical director of Cardiovascular
Services, Dr. Herrmann has focused on developing a complete
line of cardiac imaging services at BRMC as well as developing
evidence-based medical protocols for the management of
ischemic heart disease and congestive heart failure for
patients.
Dr. Herrmann has brought a high level of expertise in
invasive catheterization and advanced hemodynamics for
patients requiring cardiac catheterization, say hospital
officials. Ultimately, it is planned Dr. Herrmann will be able to
perform cardiac angioplasty and stenting interventional
procedures at BRMC.
Significant upgrades in diagnostic imaging procedures
have now earned two nationally recognized accreditations that
show proven technical performance and accuracy. The Heart
Center and nearby Imaging Services Department house an on-
site, state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization suite for the
diagnosis and treatment of certain cardiac conditions.
No physician referral is needed for an appointment with
Dr. Herrmann at BRMC’s Heart Center. Appointments are
made directly by calling the office at 814-362-8720. Further

Dr. Herrmann joined BRMC’s medical staff in January
2006 from Saint Louis University Hospital. He was recruited
by BRMC to head the hospital’s expanding Cardiology
Services.
In August, Dr. Herrmann was named to the “Guide to
America’s Top Cardiologists” by Consumers Research Council
of America.
Earlier this year, Dr. Herrmann was selected to the
national “Best Physicians 2009” of U.S. cardiologists by the
Victoria Foundation. This list selects the top 500 cardiologists
in the U.S.
He was previously named to the prestigious Best Doctors
in America list in 2005-06 by Best Doctors Inc. and again for
that award in 2007-08. Best Doctors Inc. is a recognition of
excellence announced internationally and given to only 4
percent of physicians in the U.S. These awards are given based
on the survey results of more than 50,000 physicians across
the U.S. and 30 countries which provide their
recommendations of the best among their peer group.
In spring 2008, he earned a 10-year board certification in
Nuclear Cardiology from the Certification Board of Nuclear
Cardiology.
Dr. Herrmann also is board-certified in Internal
Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Adult Echocardiography
by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American
Society of Echocardiography. He also is board-eligible in
Interventional Cardiology.
Dr. Herrmann also is an award-winning teacher,
researcher and author. He was recognized as the Cardiology
Teacher of the Year, Internal Medicine Teacher of the Year, and
Distinguished Teacher in the School of Medicine for each of his
four years as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine/
Cardiovascular Diseases at Saint Louis University.
He holds an adjunctive Assistant Professor position in
Physiology and Pharmacology at Saint Louis University, where
he continues to teach Cardiovascular Physiology in the School
of Medicine.
Dr. Herrmann also is recognized in “Who’s Who” for
medical school educators. He received his medical degree from
Saint Louis University in 1995 and completed his Internal
Medicine Residency, Cardiology Fellowship and Interventional
Cardiology Fellowship at Saint Louis University Hospital.
He received his doctorate in Cardiovascular Physiology
and Biophysics from the University of Washington, where he
studied the metabolic control of coronary blood and cardiac
exercise physiology. f

Game Commission Offers Advice On
Avoiding Bear Conflicts
HARRISBURG - Many Pennsylvanians will be
spending increasing amounts of time outdoors. This

late-November. For some bears, the search for food may
lead them closer to people or homes.
Ternent offered suggestions on how to reduce the
likelihood that your property will attract bruins and
how to best react when a bear is encountered.
“Bear activity can increase during the fall as bears
try to consume as many calories as possible from any
source they can find in preparation for denning,”
Ternent said. “As a result, sightings of bears can
increase, particularly if natural nut and berry crops are
below average.”
“While Pennsylvania bears are mostly timid
animals that would sooner run than confront people,
residents should know a few things about how to react
if they encounter a bear, or better yet, how to avoid an
encounter altogether by reducing the likelihood of
attracting bears in the first place.”
Ternent stressed there are no known records of a
Pennsylvania black bear killing a human, and there
have been fewer than 25 reported injuries resulting
from black bear encounters during the past 10 years in
the state. However, deaths caused by black bears have
occurred elsewhere in North America. Pennsylvania’s
bear population currently is estimated at 15,000
animals, and reports of problems because people failed
to keep food away from bears are not uncommon.
“Pennsylvanians need to understand that when
bears become habituated to getting food from people, it
can lead to conflicts, property damage and the
possibility of injury or eventual destruction of the bear,”
Ternent said. “Feeding wildlife, whether the activity is
intended for birds or deer, can draw bears into an area.
Once bears become habituated to an area where they
find food, they will continue to return, which is when
the bear can become a real problem for homeowners
and neighbors.”
“Even more disturbing are the reports we receive
about people intentionally feeding bears to make them
more visible for viewing or photographing.”
Since March 2003, it has been illegal to
intentionally feed bears in Pennsylvania. Also, the
unintentional feeding of bears which results in nuisance
complaints filed with the Game Commission can result
in a written warning that, if ignored, could lead to a
citation and fine.
“We recognize that people enjoy viewing wildlife,
and we are not attempting to impact that activity,”
Ternent said. “But, the agency has an obligation to
reduce conflicts when and where we can. All too often,
human complaints about bears can be traced back to
intentional or unintentional feeding. To protect the
public, as well as bears, we need to avoid the dangers of

safely feed birds for those in prime bear areas include:

food dishes inside overnight.
Keep your distance. If a bear shows up in your
backyard, stay calm. From a safe distance, shout at it

CCMH WILL HOLD H1N1 CLINICS
Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will hold several H1N1
clinics for high risk groups, as recommended by the CDC:
pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of children
younger than six months, health care and emergency medical
services personnel, those six months to 24 years, and those 25
to 64 years with certain health conditions. Clinics will be held,
as vaccine is available, at the following locations:
Coudersport Primary Care, located at the Irwin Medical
Arts Center at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, will hold
several H1N1 vaccination clinics from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on
Wednesdays and Thursdays, through November 19. Additional
dates may be scheduled as vaccine is available. Appointments
are not needed.
The Emporium Health Center will hold H1N1 vaccination
clinics November 3, and November 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
and 1 to 4 p.m., November 5. Appointments are not required.

Port Allegany Pediatrics will hold a flu clinic for its patients
from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. November 7; children will be able to
receive seasonal and H1N1 vaccines, as vaccine is available.

vaccine and that children ages 6 months to 24 years receive an

BRMC HOSTING FREE FAMILY CAREGIVER
TELECONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER
McKean County VNA & Hospice, the home health
department of Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), will
be hosting a free teleconference for the public in November on
“Safe and Sound: How To Prevent Medication Mishaps.” It will
be held Thursday, Nov. 12, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in BRMC’s
Ground Floor Assembly Room.
November is National Family Caregivers Month and has
been celebrated for the past 13 years. It is designed to be a
time to thank, support and educate those who provide care to
loved ones in the home. The upcoming teleconference is
sponsored by the National Family Caregivers Association.
“This program is for those who are caring for a loved one
who is elderly, taking multiple medications, sees more than
one doctor, or suffers from multiple illnesses,” says Kathy
Pascarella, director of McKean County VNA & Hospice.
Answers will be provided on: when medication problems
are most likely to occur; what can be done to minimize risks
associated with medications; how to help a loved one be more
adherent to medication regimens; preventing medication
problems at the hospital and the doctor’s office; and how to use
the community pharmacist as a resource.
“The teleconference is designed to improve the ability of
family caregivers to manage medications, prevent medical
errors and minimize risks associated with medication use,”
says Mrs. Pascarella.
“Improved medication management between patients,
caregivers and healthcare professionals can improve clinical
outcomes and patient safety,” she notes.
No registration is required to attend the teleconference at
BRMC.
According to the National Family Caregivers Association,
“Bad reactions to medications result in 100,000 deaths a year.”

CONSERVATION CELEBRATION SET WITH TALK ON
DEREGULATION OF ELECTRICITY.
The County Conservation District, Penn State Extension,
and the Farm Service Agency celebrated 50 years of partnering
to achieve conservation efforts in McKean County at the
Masonic Lodge in Bradford on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Dr.
Dennis Buffington from the Department of Agricultural
Engineering at Penn State University presented information
on “Deregulation and Conservation of Electricity in
Pennsylvania”.
Buffington shared with the group that electricity
rate caps will expire for PPL on December 31st, 2009,
and for Penelec and Allegheny Power on December 31,
2010. PPL has recently released their rates for 2010,
indicating a 25 to 30% increase. Customers in the state
of Maine saw a 100% increase in electricity bills and
New Jersey saw 60 to 80% increases when deregulation
happened. Time is almost up for PPL customers, but
electricity consumers in our area have one more year to
begin understanding how their electricity bill is
generated and what decisions can be made to save on
electricity costs.
There are three stages to providing electricity. There
is the generation, the transmission, and the
distribution. On January 1, 2011, Penelec and Allegheny
Power Customers will still get their electricity
distribution from those companies, but they will be able
to choose among several companies who can generate
and transmit their electricity. If customers do nothing,
Penelec and Allegheny Power will still provide all of
your electricity, generation, transmission and
distribution, but it may not be the cheapest electricity
in the market. It is important for electricity consumers
in our area to begin understanding each line of their
electric bills and how they use electricity.
Buffington recommended that residents document how
much electricity they use and when they use it. Identify your
major uses of electricity. If on and off peak electricity is
available, understand the time periods and understand how
you could modify your load profile by shifting your electricity
usage to off peak periods. No electricity supplier will be
interested in a customer who historically has been tardy in
paying electric bills. All customers will benefit by establishing
and maintaining a record of paying electricity bills on time.

Better Money Habits Add Up to Savings
Don’t wait until the end of December to do a year-end financial review.
This is a good time to begin developing new habits that will help you
save money next year. Here are some ideas:
Utility bills: If you had a goal this year of reducing your utility expenses
by always turning off lights and lowering the thermostat, did you do it?
If your savings weren’t what you expected because you didn’t always
follow through, set a goal for next year. Notch the thermostat down a
degree or two and turn off lights you’re not using until it becomes an
easy habit.
Cell phones: If you’re on a monthly plan that gives you a certain number
of minutes for a set price, chances are you use up those minutes because
they’re there. You can save money, however, by changing to an
inexpensive phone with pre-paid minutes that you refill as needed. Your
cell phone usage is likely to go down when you consider that each call is
costing you a nickel or a dime per minute. The initial savings: no
monthly bill. Additional savings: fewer minutes used.
Grocery coupons: You have to do the work -- cut them out of the paper,
plan meals around items that are covered by the coupons -- but there is
serious money to be saved using grocery coupons. Investigate online
coupon sites, too. (Generate a throwaway e-mail address for those sites
requiring that you sign up.) Check with your local store before you
present them with printed coupons. Some stores won’t take them. Pay
attention to expiration dates. Rule of thumb: Don’t be tempted to buy
food your family won’t eat just because it looks like a good deal.
Sales flyers, ads and Internet comparison: Get in the habit of looking at
the flyers and ads in the newspaper. Compare any intended purchases to
what you find online. Plus, a local store with a Web site might list
specials that never show up in a print ad.
