Part 1 Examination
Important note for students regarding past exam papers
Past exam papers are published for illustrative purposes only. They can be used as a study aid but do not provide a definitive guide to either the format of the next exam, the topics that will be examined or the style of questions that will be set. Students should not expect their own exam to be directly comparable with previous papers. Remember that a degree requires an amount of self-study, reading around topics, and lateral thinking particularly at the higher level modules and for higher marks. Specific guidance for your exam will be given by the lecturer.

Instructions to students: Candidates should answer FOUR questions in total with at least ONE Question from each of the two sections Section A and Section B. Questions from EACH section should be answered in SEPARATE answer books. All questions carry equal marks.

This examination paper consists of 3 printed pages including the title page. Materials: Number of answer books to be provided: 2 Only the Casio calculators FX-83 (MS, ES or GT+) or FX-85 (MS, ES or GT+) are permitted for use in this exam. Dictionaries are not permitted. This examination paper may be removed from the examination room.

Question 1 To what extent do process theories of motivation represent an improvement over content theories of motivation? (25%) Question 2 Is developing and sustaining a strong organisational culture a feasible and desirable goal of management? (25%) Question 3 Good leaders are born not made. Discuss.

Question 4 A study in the 1970s by Mintzberg established that managers discharged a wide range of roles during their working day. In what way do you think these roles may have changed by the current time (January 2013) and why? Compare and contrast these roles of the practicing manager with the team working roles identified by Belbin. (25%) Question 5 In what type of circumstances does the Competing Values Framework (CVF), proposed by Quinn (cited in Boddy, 2011) help managers to be effective in their jobs? Illustrate your answer with appropriate examples.

(25%) Question 6 You have been hired as a Corporate Social Responsibility consultant by a large UK clothing retailer. They have come under pressure due to poor labour conditions in their supply chain. Using the theories discussed in class make some suggestions about how they might seek to address these supply chain issues. (25%)
