Making the right adjustments to stay active 5
Fred DAlo, a certified physical fitness specialist for seniors and people 50-plus, works with a client in the Roseville area.
am a Boomer. Although Paul McCartney beat me to it, I turn sixtyfour next month. As with everyone my age, throughout the past four decades, I suffered losses ranging from the closure of my long term employer to the death of a child and divorce after twenty-five years. I also remarried, had a daughter and turned to a new career. With the advent of injuries, less mobility and reduced overall fitness, I also gained weight. The closer my weight crept to 300 lbs., the more my health declined; sleep apnea, blood pressure and cholesterol. One day I simply had enough. I

believed I could change. It was about feeling good about myself and my health as much as it was about looking good. With a degree in biophysiology from UC Berkeley, I felt I knew a lot about health, fitness and nutrition. I wanted a short-term guide to address the micro-issues so I went to a local gym looking for a trainer. Despite the fact I am an extrovert, I felt self-conscious and very awkward. I sat in my car in the parking lot for almost 30 minutes before I could work up enough courage to walk in. My 30-something trainer immediately urged me to try a boot camp program. As I started my paces, it occurred to me that this was a great way to get injured. I tried it the trainers way for half an hour until aches in old injuries and insults about my unwillingness to commit persuaded me that the guide Id chosen had no clue as far as what anyone fifty or older should or should not do in order
to get fit. He simply didnt understand. On the other hand, it had not occurred to me prior to then that a safe and effective fitness program for anyone fifty and older needed a vastly different approach than that for someone in their twenties. I overlooked the need to distinguish between the motivations, abilities, and drawbacks unique to the 50-plus crowd as had my gym trainer. The following insights came through six months of studying with a national sports organization offering a specialized certificate in Personal Fitness Training for those 50-plus: Whether you are fifty or

eniors helping in area classrooms say volunteering fills a needed role in these days of trim school budgets. Working with students also helps them stay sharp and provides needed socialization. We have the time. We may have the talent, joked Sid Katz, 79. I find it to be an extremely beautiful program. Katz has volunteered at Coyote Ridge Elementary School in West Roseville for seven years. Currently, he tutors two to six fifthgrade students in math for 45 minutes once a week. The Sun City Roseville resident worked as an electronic engineer after dropping out of high school and entering the Air
Force. Realizing he needed a college degree for his job and to support his young family, he worked his way through night school, eventually obtaining his bachelors degree. My goal is to get the children to believe they can do the problems, he said. Some of them dont want to know they can do it. Around the same time the Golden Coyotes began, Katz co-founded an independent Sun City group for residents interested in school volunteering. Seniors Helping Our Roseville Schools (SHORS) now has about 30 members, said group president Jan Newburn. With the support of SHORS, members volunteer at Coyote Ridge and several schools in the
Roseville City School District. The group provides members with contact information for schools needing volunteers. Current SHORS members teach guitar and harmonica. In the past, a member taught bocce, Newburn said. Nancy Schmitz started volunteering this school year at Junction Elementary for two days a week for an hour and 20 minutes each day. She reads to the children and facilitates group work. This year, Valentines Day was a highlight. The teacher called Schmitz to the front of the room and presented her with a box of chocolates and homemade Valentines from the children. Schmitz said she started to cry. I hadnt had one of
those since my son was a little boy, so it just brought back a lot of memories, she said. Other seniors not affiliated with SHORS said they enjoy volunteering at Coyote Ridge. Josephine Proctor, 72, volunteers one full day per week, including for her daughter, who is a teacher at the school, and in her grandchildrens classrooms. Proctor reads to the children and completes other regular tasks for the teachers, such as making copies and preparing art materials. She also has accompanied students on field trips. She said volunteering is an important social activity for her, now that shes a widow and retired from her 42-year career in nursing. Volunteering is

gratifying to her. I dont think theres much in life that gives you more satisfaction than giving back, she added. Some former teachers find school volunteering a natural fit in retirement. Andrea Mello, 65, brings 41 years of experience as a public educator to her role as a volunteer. Mello supports four classrooms in varied ways, including leading literary discussion and one-one-one tutoring. She said she appreciates cultivating a love of learning in the students. Education was good to me so Id like to give back to education especially those kids that struggle, she added. Our struggling students really need the extra help.

new law set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2015 will create a state-wide registry of qualified home-care aides, and require home-care agencies to train their employees to a certain standard. Proponents of the law say this will prevent seniors who need care from being victimized by unqualified or untrustworthy caregivers, but others worry the bills cost will make care unaffordable for some seniors, limiting their ability to stay active and independent. Gov. Jerry Brown approved the Home Care Services Consumer Protection Act in October, and some local care providers, including Right at Home owner Tom Bollum of Roseville, are divided on the question of whether the bill has done a favor for seniors in the long run. On the up side, he said, the bill will

requires his caregivers to receive five hours of orientation on HPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) laws, safety and transferring, Alzheimers disease, dementia and other issues of caring at home, which is more than the new law will ask. But even though his employees wont need more training, his company will have to pay licensing fees to the Department of Social Services, and the size of those fees is still unknown. Bollum guessed his clients will have to absorb this new expense. The question is, if this costs $10,000 a year for us to be licensed, where does that come from? he asked. Bollum added his employees serve close to 75 clients in the Roseville area, and many of them depend on in-home care to stay active.

Remember Moms adage: Stand up straight! Well, she was right. Thats because posture plays a big role in our health and wellbeing, said Chiropractor Jenna Land of A Perfect Curve Chiropractic. The biggest thing I see is posture deterioration and that is seen in the head first, Land said. Thats when a persons head is forward from the shoulders. The mechano receptors in the back of the neck tell the head and the body what position to be in, Land said. If we dont pay attention to posture, these muscles become weak and the spine is not functioning the way it should. As a chiropractor, Land helps people prevent falls by working on posture and increasing their strength.

She helps older men and women stay healthy and active so that they can do the things they love to do. I think it all comes down to posture, she said. Land listed several benefits of chiropractic. No. 1 is pain relief. When people are in pain, its hard for them to sit up straight and maintain posture, she said.
Other benefits are:
Katherine Southworthy, left, is examined by Roseville chiropractor Jenna Land, with works with senior citizens.
Decreased joint degeneration; Increased health and well-being; Decreased incidences of falling. It helps when people are able to get their legs working properly and get their heads back on their shoulders, Land said. Another benefit, she said, is that chiropractic keeps seniors out of nursing homes. She cited a 1996 study in the journal Topics of Clinical Chiropractic by Dr.
Increased range of motion of the spine and extremities (arms, legs and head) Increased balance and coordination;
Ian Coulter that found less than five percent of people using chiropractic were in nursing homes while 48 percent who didnt use chiropractic care ended up in nursing homes. Lands mother is benefiting from her daughters care. She used to constantly catch colds, but after starting chiropractic 10 years ago, she doesnt get colds anymore, Land said. Chiropractic care boosts the immune system so much that people are more able to fight off viruses including the flu, sinus infections and regular colds, she said. Dr. Land offers the program, The BStrong4Life System which aids in rebuilding bone density and reversing the effects of osteopenia and osteoporosis. The warm-up and exercises, which can be done in street clothes, take less than 20 minutes and are done once a week.

hiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain and pain in the joints of the arms or legs and headaches. According to the American Chiropractic Association, the most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as spinal manipulation, also called chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile or restricted in their movement as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
oo many people feel they cant do the things they did when they were younger. But that idea doesnt sit well with Dr. Tim Smith of New Life Chiropractic in Rocklin. People may think their physical limitations are normal because of their age, but Smith disagrees. I tell them, you can do that. Smith sees patients with a variety of complaints. They may have pain, high blood pressure or health issues such as diabetes, heart problems or cancer. They may want to get off medications or theyd like to have more energy. As a chiropractor, Smith determines the needs of all his patients, including old-

er people, and accesses their health goals. We are able to help people by improving the function of the nervous system, he said. He explained that the spine surrounds the nervous system and, if the spine is out of alignment, the body loses communication with the nerves. We remove the things that interfere with the functions of the nervous system, he said. We do everything we can to increase their mobility and
flexibility and maximize their body functions. Problems with the neck can affect parts of the upper body including the heart, the respiratory system, hormones and high blood pressure. They may have difficulty sleeping. Some older people have chronic problems like arthritis, old injuries or chronic pain. Others want to lose weight. Medication and surgery are not the only things to help them, he said. We want to find the cause of their problems, not just decrease their symptoms. For example, people may take Tylenol for headaches, but their headaches come back. As a chiropractor, Smith wants to fix the problems so the symptoms go away and dont come back.
However, some people may wait too long and their treatment may take longer. Or they cant be helped. People need to check out their symptoms as soon as possible, before their problems cant be corrected, he said. Chiropractic care is defined as specific adjustments to remove interference to the nervous system and allow the body to heal itself, Smith said. We do a full examination and take special X-rays. Its very specific and we make sure its completely safe. He may start with gentle techniques and then go on to other procedures. His goal? We dont want to just decrease symptoms; we want to do what we can to relieve them.

and they are able to keep doing their daily tasks and routines theyve always been used to doing while staying at home. It gives them more freedom to come and go as they want and choose what activities and hobbies they want to continue doing. Bollum said laws which attempt to regulate a profession, even for the sake of safety, can sometimes create an underground economy, in which a consumer who cannot afford a licensed caregiver must resort to an unlicensed one on Craigslist or elsewhere. These may be cheaper but are often not insured, supervised or background-checked, and therefore pose a serious risk to vulnerable seniors. We hire 5 percent of people who apply, Bollum explained. We go through an extensive
interview process with references, drug tests, background and reference checks, and then I ask the question, Would I want them to take care of my parents? Youre not getting that when you hire somebody off the street. And if someone gets sick or has car trouble, what do you do? His other concern is that the law will create a registry of licensed caregivers, which he thinks is overreaching and potentially dangerous to his employees. No other professional health license or certificate administered by the state requires the linking of the employee to the employer, he said. To have online access to where they (work) and how they can be found may not be in the best interest of the safety of our employees.

Ask what restrictions you might currently face, the benefits of exercise for your specific health issues, and get tested for your Resting Metabolic Rate. A very inexpensive test that takes less than a half hour resulting in your knowing the maximum amount of calories you can take in every day without gaining weight. If you take in more calories than you expend, you will gain weight. 70-percent of any fitness program involves food: What you eat, how much you eat, when you eat and whether you are kept from weight goals due to allergies such as gluten or lactose intolerance or the side effects of certain medications. The remaining 30-percent is about exercise, which remains crucial regardless of age or level of fitness. Slow and steady is the rule, increasing only as your body allows. Age is no excuse: We can gain new muscle mass up through age eighty. Stronger muscles give us better balance so as to avoid muscle and bone damage, not just the ability to open up the pickle jar. Whether you share your program goals and daily routine with a friend, partner, co-worker or neighbor, add one source of social contact to keep you from slipping into isolation.
