Indian wars and Westward Expansion Rationale: Moving westward had always been part of the United States

ideals from the thirteen colonies until we were a continental nation. However, we today see this as a docile and normal event. This expansion, however, had many consequences for the native Americans who called the middle of the nation home, the plains, the north east and the remainder. Their suffering led to battles and wars with the troops of the US. Providing students with the full story is the goal of this lesson. Curriculum Frameworks: USII.40 Analyze the causes of the continuing westward expansion of the American people after the Civil War and the Impact of this migration on the Native Americans. NCSS: 3 People, Places and Environments- Learners examine where people, places and resources are located why they are there and why this matters. Learning Objectives: SWBAT: identify the battles of Little Big Horn, Wounded Knee, Red river wars and Geronimo, Sitting bull and General Custer. Explain how the expansion westward forced the native americans to give up their land and caused clashes and wars with US troops. Teaching Methods: Maps, Technology and research, Oral Presentations Procedure: 10-15 min=Opener: Map of the united states on the board (projector or overhead) o Where were citizens moving to after the civil war? Show where they already were (CA, East, South, Old west) o Show a map of westward movements o Why do we think they were moving there? Homestead acts- Land for farming was pretty much free Tabula rasa-blank slate- no one lived there o Did no one live there? Who lived there? Or who called that area home? Natives- Follow the buffalo o With Natives living there what issues can you forsee? War, fighting, niceness? etc o Show a map Native American battles and wars Introduce activity: Students will be researching the different battles of the time- I will select 4-7 battles, people or events that are important and the teams will pick them in order to do some research on them o 1: Present the goal- Students will be researching to learn more about the time and then they will present to the class so that they can teach their classmates about their event o 2: Present topics: Wounded Knee, Little Big Horn, Red River Wars, Sand Creek Massacre, Red Clouds War o 3: tell students what they are looking for: Information about their battle or person, what happened, why it happened, who was in it (native tribe and US forces) important indivduals. o 4: Put together presentations o 5: Present to class

Ask students to take a minute to try and figure out what he was singing about Black soldiers forced to fight for the US Natives called them Buffalo soldiers due to their curly hair o What is he describing? o What do we know about African American soldiers throughout history? Write a poem or a song about something we have learned or something from US I o Indian wars, Reconstruction, o One to two verses that is all.
