NEVADA STATE COLLEGE TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Description of Classroom:
Biology grade 9-12 Type of class: P1=22 students;P2=24 students;P4=21 students;P5= 21 students Demographics: Hispanic, Asian Age: 14-19 Gender: P1=13 boys; 9 girls, P2=15 boys; 9 girls, P4= 10 boys; 11girls, P5= 11 boys, 10 girls

Background:
The lesson: Introduction to DNA fits into the Science Curriculum benchmarks Biology I 6760 Second semester Third Quarter: Introduction to the Structure of DNA This is the first lesson about DNA structure. The students stage of learning relative to content : acquisition

Content Objective(s):
After the teachers explanations, taking notes about DNA structure ,guidance and hands Instructions to work with nucleotides cards, completing the worksheet questions the students will be able to: Describe the structure of DNA ( nucleotide, sugar, phosphate, nucleic acids) Explain the principal function of DNA Define the term complementary base paring

Language Objective(s): The students will be able to:

Listen to the new information about DNA structure write notes on their notebook participate in classroom discussion match name to DNA structure in diagram

Nevada Standards:
6.1 The student will relate the structure of DNA to mitosis[L12.A.1, L12 A.3]

Key Vocabulary: Nucleotide = The basic building block of nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA. It is an organic
compound made up of nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group.

Nitrogen base = A molecule that contains nitrogen and has the chemical properties of a base.
The nitrogenous bases in DNA are adenine(A), guanine(G) thymine(T) and cytosine(C)

Sugar =Any monosaccharide or disaccharide used especially by organisms to store energy. Phosphate=as a biological molecule, it is composed of phosphorus and oxygen and plays a
major role in biological process of many organism as chemical component nucleic acids(DNA and RNA),nucleotides (ATP), plasma membrane(phospholipids)etc.

Adenine=one of the fundamental components of nucleic acids, as DNA, in which it forms a base pair with thymine, and RNA, in which it pairs with uracil. Symbol: A Thymine =one of the four bases of a nucleotide that are found in DNA. Thymine is paired with
adenine in DNA sequences and is replaced by uracil in mRNA

Cytosine =A pyrimidine base found in DNA and RNA that pairs with guanine Guanine = A purine base found in DNA and RNA; pairs with cytosine. One of the four bases,
one of the constituent bases of nucleic acids and nucleotides.

Teaching Strategies:
Explanation students will listen to the teacher explanation, or they will participate with answer to explain parts of the DNA structure Questioning Collaborate-peer review, the students will be able to check their neighbor DNA model Modeling using DNA kits Closing

Warm Up Activity: Describe what happens on S phase during the Interphase. Lesson Sequence:
Warm up: (5 min) The students will take notes about DNA structure there will be 5 power point slides (15 min) The students will use DNA kits to practice build the DNA structure (10 min) They will answer to the question on the board: What is the structure of the DNA? This question will help them to practice build the DNA structure using the DNA kits. Structure. (5 min.)Using the notes, the students will work individually on Introduction to DNA worksheet filling up the blank spaces for each question. On the second page they will color and label the DNA diagram(20 min) Ticket out the door. (5 min.)

Accommodations:
The class accommodations will meet all required student accommodations. The sitting chart will be used to help students to become involved in class participation The students will help each other and the teacher will help with the guidance needed for lab or other activities. Extra time provided for students who need it. Students can translate for each other.

Supplementary Materials:
Notes DNA kits Introduction to DNA worksheet Ticket out the door Biology text book pg. 185-187

Review/Assessment:
Introduction to DNA worksheet Ticket at the door

Reflection:
The lesson went well. All students were taking notes and they were participating in discussions. For next time I have to anticipate the time necessary for completing the whole assessment worksheet and their ticket out the door. It is very important to make sure that the students pay attention when I give them directions to follow when they have to work with DNA kits. Lack of attention will lead them to confusion and they will not be able to know what they are supposed to do on their assessments.
