lS0AlR has the requlslte lnfrastructure to undertake composlng/
prlntlng of lts own publlcatlons lncludlng research journals. Besldes,
lt also takes up slmllar speclallzed jobs from other 0SlR laboratorles/
lnstltutlons, government agencles/departments and other organlzatlons.
The lrlntlng and lroductlon Dlvlslon comprlses Arts & Craphlcs, 0omputer
faclllty, DTl, lroductlon, lrlntlng and Blndlng unlts. NlS0AlR also
undertakes productlon and prlntlng of journals for outslde agencles on
regular basls. 0urrently, (l) Current Literature cn Science cf Science, a
blmonthly journal of NlSTADS, (ll) N|STADS News and (lll) Mausam, a
quarterly journal of lndlan Meteorologlcal Department are belng produced
at NlS0AlR.
wlth the merger of lNSD00 and NlS00M, the maln journals of
erstwhlle lNSD00, namely |ndian Science Abstracts (Fortnlghtly) and Anna|s
cf Library & |nfcrmaticn Science (uarterly) are also handled by thls
Dlvlslon for prlntlng.
Many jobs are also recelved for prlntlng from the SAAR0
Documentatlon 0entre, 14 Satsang vlhar Marg, New Delhl.
1obs are preferably accepted ln dlgltlzed form for lt expedltes the
work process. Data entry ls also carrled out wherever necessary. The
lroductlon sectlon analyses the job and glves an estlmate ln accordance
wlth the lald pollcles and concurrence of the flnance department along
wlth a rough tlme schedule. Tlmellness and quallty servlce are glven prlme
lmportance.
Desk Top Publishing (DTP)
Thls sectlon ls malnly lnvolved ln DTl processlng and scannlng jobs. The
processlng ls done ln such a way that the llne drawlngs and graphlcs are
also lncorporated lnto the lald out pages to get a composlte slngle page

and laser prlnter outputs are taken on translucent sheets. Thls ellmlnates
the process of maklng negatlves as the output ls used dlrectly for plate
maklng, and the cost of prlntlng ls reduced.
Durlng thls year the jobs carrled out lncluded NlS0AlR Research
1ournals, CS|F News, lopular Sclence Books and other sclentlflc books,
Annual Reports, Bulletlns, Folders, lamphlets, lroceedlngs, etc. NlS0AlR`s
yearly magazlne, Sanchetna ln Hlndl was also produced ln a very short
perlod.
Computer Facility
The 0omputer Faclllty ls equlpped wlth adequate number of advanced
computers along wlth two Hl scanners and prlnters. The sectlon provldes
servlces such as, data entry, scannlng of photographs, lllustratlons,
chemlcal structures, graphs, etc., and complete page formattlng uslng
approprlate softwares. The lllustratlons and flgures recelved ln hard copy
form are scanned and saved ln graphlc mode uslng dlfferent formats.
These graphlc flles are then lmported ln lhotoshop program where edltlng,
cleanlng, cropplng, lmage rotatlng, etc., are done for better reproductlon.
The data entry of varlous jobs was also undertaken uslng Hlndl and
Fngllsh word lrocesslng Softwares. ln addltlon to these, the sectlon

provldes asslstance ln preparatlon of slldes uslng MS lower lolnt for
presentatlons on varlous occaslons. Also, thls unlt ls entrusted wlth the
job of malntalnlng and updatlng NlS0AlR`s webslte. The contents and
abstracts of all the perlodlcals publlshed by NlS0AlR are now avallable on
the webslte.
Art and Graphics (Designing, Layout, Graphic Arts
and Photography)
Ar t and Craphlcs Sectlon ls equlpped wlth hlghend systems and
accessorles to handle all the vlsuals, drawlngs and lllustratlons of the
varlous lnhouse publlcatlons as well as outslde jobs undertaken by the
lnstltute. 0onsultancy for 'Deslgnlng and Craphlcs` ls also provlded to
outslde cllents where aesthetlc and technlcal aspects are dlscussed to
brlng out the best results. lnhouse colour photography ls handled by the
photo studlo attached to the sectlon. 0onventlonal slldes are also prepared
on demand. Tasks such as cover deslgnlng, creatlve lllustratlons, layout
and colour scheme, master head deslgn, photo masklng, etc., are done
ln thls sectlon.
Softwares such as 0orel Draw 8 and lhotoshop 5.5 are used for
deslgnlng. 0reatlve lllustratlons ln colour or black and whlte are elther
done by hand or on computer. Sometlmes they are shot, scanned, lmproved
and glven as TlFF or FlS flles. Technlcal lllustratlons recelved from the
authors of research papers ln the form of hard copy are redrawn by hand,
lf needed, scanned and lmproved uslng lhotoshop and glven to the edltors
of the research journals on flopples or through LAN for placement ln the
lald out DTl pages.
Production
Thls sectlon has quallfled persons for undertaklng productlon jobs such
as plannlng and estlmatlon of prlntlng jobs, proofreadlng, etc. Thls sectlon
lnteracts wlth the outslde partles for undertaklng jobs as well as sub
contractlng part of the job to outslde vendors. Staff of thls sectlon are
actlvely lnvolved ln collectlon of the job fee from the outslde partles too.
Printing Facilities
lrlntlng ls one of the major actlvltles of the lnstltute. Apart from research
journals and magazlnes, prlntlng of a number of books, monographs and
repor ts ls also carrled out. After obtalnlng the cameraready pages/

translucent sheets, and scannlng, the maln steps lnvolved ln the productlon
of a publlcatlon are negatlve/posltlve maklng, lmposltlon, plate maklng,
prlntlng and blndlng. The output of the prlntlng unlt ls around 28,000
pages per annum lncludlng 5000 colour pages; the total number of
lmpresslons durlng the year were around 4 crores.
For performlng these operatlons, the NlS0AlR lrlntlng Unlt has the
followlng major equlpments:

Modernization Plan
Slnce prlntlng ls the backbone of NlS0AlR, lt ls necessary that thls unlt ls
kept well equlpped wlth advanced machlnes to remaln competltlve ln the

publlshlng lndustry. ln vlew of thls and to further lmprove the quallty of
prlnt productlon, a modernlzatlon plan for prepress and postpress has
been prepared. Under thls plan an lmage Setter System wlll be acqulred.
lt would enable fourpage plannlng and lmpose materlal for plate maklng
and thus ellmlnate conventlonal manual lmposlng system and chances of
error. lrocurement of a flvecolour 0l0 0ffset prlntlng machlne compatlble
wlth the lmagesetter wlth advanced features such as flvecolour job at
one go ls also ln the plpellne.
