Noemi Flores April 8, 2014 LIS 773 Collection Development Proposal The picture book collection of St.

Theodosias elementary school library is in need of revitalization. This coincides with the institution of the the Common Core State Standards. The standards highlight the importance of mastering the skill of illustration evaluation by the children (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.7) and the best way for the library to accomplish this- and through this the other objectives- is to provide a stellar picture book collection. It is important that children are able to recognize and read common types of texts such as fiction, literary nonfiction, poetry and plays (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.5, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.10 ), identify various narrators (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.6), recount fables and determine their morals (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2), understand the relationship between words and rhythm in poetry and song (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4), and compare and contrast several renditions of the same story. As this is a picture book collection, the intended audience is kindergarten, first and second graders, and the adults who work with these students. There are both print and digital picture books included here. The digital picture books are mostly nonfiction. The reasoning behind this is that as nonfiction is often more difficult or off putting to students these interactive digital picture books will engender early interest in nonfiction and increase their familiarity with technology. This is part of a long term plan to graduate well students literate in any area. This list is organized into categories so that the reasoning for their purchase is clear. I utilized Titlewave, EBSCOs Core Childrens Collection database, reviews from School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews etc., award lists, and amazon.com to determine which purchases to make. I propose the addition of the following materials in pursuit of creating a collection which supports student learning as inspired by the new standards.
