Reaching Every Teen

Reaching Out
Adolescence is tougher than its ever been As our western society makes many supposed advances, there are costs to be paid, many of them by teenagers. Ironically, a world that boasts of its connectedness may in fact be more disconnected than ever before. We are witnessing the continuing breakdown of family and true relationships are becoming a thing of the past as more and more people are lost in cyberspace, having hundreds of friends but not really having anyone Teens need somebody Two years ago Canadians learned of the tragic tale of Amanda Todd, who before taking her own life, cried out for help and asked the biggest life question. Sadly, Amandas story is not unique.

Mental health services are strained as a growing number of teens show up at emergency rooms across Canada with selfinflicted injuries and suicidal thoughts, say pediatric psychiatrists. The Vancouver Sun

Kids lack self-esteem... because nobody loved us or care. The moment I pulled it together... all it took was somebody to show a little love as a human being. Canadian Press

A Place for Every Teen

CONTACT WORK Is the vital part of Young Life where volunteer leaders spend time with teens in their world; at schools, sporting events, malls or wherever they hang out. CLUB Is launched by the relationships leaders have built through contact work. These meetings are attended by teens from junior or senior high schools and they include music, humor and a talk about the Christian faith. CAMPAIGNERS Is the name given to our weekly small group Bible Studies, which are opportunities for teens and their friends to explore and grow in their faith. CAMP Is unique because teens attend and come home from camp with the Young Life leader they have come to know throughout the school year. It is very common for teens to say their week at camp was the best week of their life. Check out Young Lifes amazing camp RockRidge Canyon (rockridgecanyon.com)

Increasing Our Reach

BUILDING THE MISSION Our vision includes adding cultural diversity to our leadership ranks, with an emphasis on volunteer recruitment and committee ownership. The latter two strategies will lead to growth at the grass roots level. A key strategy to provide sustainable funds for building our mission is to retire building debt which will free up ongoing cash flow for new salaries and new programs.

GROWING OUR PROGRAMS This growth will strengthen existing areas, cause growth in new communities and spur on our small town ministry. Through growth of the field, not only will we reach more kids, but increased financial sustainablility with further enhance the National Offices capacity to make more investments to strengthen our fieldwork.

EXPANDING CAMPING CAPACITY An expectation for growth in field ministries mandates a plan to increase our camping capacity. We have the ability to add capacity incrementally by building additional bed space at RockRidge Canyon and/or establishing junior high camping at a separate rental facility, perhaps in Alberta.

Expected Outcomes of Building Our Mission

To spur on continued mission growth we wish to invest in three key areas; restoration of working capital, increased investment in our field work and growing our camp capacity.

BUILDING THE MISSION Retire $3.9 million of camp construction debt owed internally and externally to restore our working capital Establish a working pipeline to increase staff, increase the quality of work with teens and improve local committee ownership Increase the diversity of our leadership and our outreach to minority teen groups GROWING OUR PROGRAMS Young Life Club Ministry would be doubled over 2011 baseline of 64 to 128 clubs by 2015 and double again by 2018 Ministry growth rates will accelerate as volunteer ministry with teens becomes the norm Thousands more people would be impacted by Jesus Christ through their direct involvement in ministry activity through Young Life of Canada EXPANDING CAMPING CAPACITY Summer Camping attendance would steadily increase to 2,500 at RockRidge Canyon by 2016 Eastern Division Young Life would fill its own week at Saranac Lake (300 teens and leaders) by the summer of 2015 New Alberta junior high camp rental and/or dorm expansion at RockRidge would begin by 2016
