and locally but we wanted to share the good news from across our region too. So we set out to give our customers a regional perspective as some of them have interests in Southeast Asia and most of them were interested in what others do in neighbouring countries. As expected we realised that such good intentions require even more improvements in the way we work. Yet it is all worth it. We, in the team, told ourselves that this is the normal situation in Scania. We have learnt what can be done and what can be done better for our customers and in this case, for our customers reading pleasure. The team found out that we are with our brothers and sisters in every part of the Scania organisation, going through the principle called Continuous Improvement. From Sales to After Sales Service, from the Parts department to Human Resource, even the front desk of the Reception to the tea-lady; each of us live and breathe the need to do good-made-great everyday for our customers. So on behalf of the team, I would like to apologise for any shortcomings during the process of creating this magazine. There is always room for improvement even when it gets better. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Thasanan Piya-aksornsak, Marketing and Communications Manager, Scania Siam, for putting this magazine together under challenging circumstances. Thank you to the people within the Scania organisation in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand for supporting with ideas and effort. Most of all, thank you, our dear customers who allowed us your time to share with us your valuable learnings which is already contributing to a mutual improvement for better productivity in our day-to-day operations. Thank you so much and I hope you will enjoy this rst read.

SANI EXPRESS ROUTE TO SUCCESS

Text & Photo: Phuah Ken Bin of Accent Edge

Sani United Berhad (SUB) is investing an estimated RM75 million to expand its express bus services nationwide. Recently, the homegrown company added 13 new Scania buses to meet growing passenger demands in Malaysia.

ACK IN 2006, Sani United Berhad

EARLY BUS TRAVELS During his childhood

started its operations with only six single-deck buses. Helmed by founder Dato Wan Mohamad Sani, the company today operates an entire eet of Scania buses and dominates the main routes between Kuala Lumpur and the main towns in the East Coast of Malaysia. Dato Sani is passionate about life and living every minute to its fullest. A man of amazing talents, he started his illustrious career in the entertainment industry as a lead singer, an accomplished actor and a successful model. With a seemingly insatiable appetite for taking on new challenges and enterprising ventures, Dato Sani decided to make a surprise career switch from singer to entrepreneur in 2006. He has not looked back ever since.

days, Dato Sani would often take an express bus from his hometown in Kuala Terengganu to visit his parents in Kuala Lumpur. I still remember commuting back and forth every weekend. Back then, buses were not as well-equipped or comfortable as they are now. Travelling was just a means to get to ones destination. There was hardly any service at all, said Dato Sani. As it turns out, this brave young lad would eventually move to Kuala Lumpur to further his studies at Sunway College. Little did he realise then, he would one day operate a successful express bus service company in Malaysia.

With Scania buses, Sani Express has benefitted from excellent fuel economy, reliability and high uptime.

Dato Wan Mohamad Sani, Founder of Sani Express, strives to improve customer satisfaction and quality of service. Sani Express Operations Control room.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS At the beginning, business was tough as Sani Express had to compete with other more established bus operators in terms of service levels and comfort. Also, its existing six single deck buses were not exactly meeting expectations and to make matters worse, these vehicles were constantly experiencing a lot of technical and maintenance issues. To quickly rise above the competition, Dato Sani realized it needed a brand new eet of buses. SUB set forth stringent requirements for this: fuel efciency, reliability, comfort, safety and minimum downtime. We spent a lot of time evaluating many different brands in the market. And nally, the decision was made to order 25 new Scania buses. We are indeed proud to have

chosen Scania as our new eet of buses, said Dato Sani. We started using Scania buses for our Kuala Terengganu route which required us to have a reliable bus for the long distance travel, said Dato Sani. From then on, we started replacing the old buses with Scania buses because I strongly believe the more you invest, the more you will get in return. And thankfully, our revenues began to grow and so did prot, added Dato Sani. At the time, Sani Express was still a relatively new player in the marketplace, and acquiring a Scania eet was a heavy investment for us. But in the end, it was worth it, Dato Sani commented.

SELECTING THE RIGHT BRAND Obviously, there were several determining factors when it came to nalising the managements procurement decision. One of the major criteria that prompted Sani Express to choose Scania was its excellent fuel economy. Premium after-sales service and quality technical support were among other important factors that were taken into consideration. We were very impressed with Scania buses because of its low fuel consumption, safety features, comfort level and low maintenance. In short, Scania delivers excellent value, reliability and high uptime, said Dato Sani.

If you choose to pay less for a product, you are actually inviting problems to yourself by paying for more maintenance in the future
Dato Wan Mohamad Sani

Branding is also paramount for Sani Express. By deploying a recognisable bus brand, Sani Express was able to capture market share rapidly and cultivate customer loyalty. Passengers naturally opt for Sani Express Bus service as it gives them a consistent and satisfying travel experience each time. We decided to invest in a total of twenty ve (25) Scania buses as I wanted to expand my routes to the East Coast and Northern states of Malaysia, said Dato Sani. In fact, Sani Express took delivery of 13 new Scania buses last year.

KIATTANA THE HIGHWAY STAR

PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE When it comes to maintaining his eet of buses, Sani Express spares no expense and has signed up for a comprehensive Repair & Maintenance contract with Scania, which covers all repair, maintenance and service requirements. From his experience, if a bus is well maintained, downtime will be minimized. If you choose to pay less for a product, you are actually inviting problems to yourself by paying for more maintenance in the future, quipped Dato Sani. In his relentless pursuit of excellence in customer satisfaction, Dato Sani strives to improve service and quality in transportation. With Scania buses, Sani Express has been able to benet from excellent fuel economy, less downtime and more importantly, better image and customer perception. Scanias comprehensive driver training program ensures that each and every of the Sani Express drivers is provided the necessary knowledge and expertise to optimize the performance of each Scania bus for the travel comfort and safety of all passengers. Going forward, Sani Express aims to spread its wings by conquering bus routes in southern peninsular Malaysia. Our plan is to expand our business from 30 to 100 buses by 2015 to cater to all major routes in Malaysia, said Dato Sani. I am extremely pleased with our working partnership with Scania. With Scanias world class reputation in building solid, reliable buses, I am condent this partnership will continue to ourish in the future, concluded Dato Sani.

Twenty years ago, while transportation was only about the delivery of packages from one place to another, Kiattana Transport Public Co., Ltd. believed that transportation can be the vein of other businesses too, which was not only the turning point of the company but also created a new history of transportation business in Thailand.

ADAENG INDUSTRY PUBLIC CO., LTD.

would like to hire a transportation company to deliver zinc and required at least 100,000 tonnes of standard transportation capacity annually. The founder of Kiattana then saw the opportunity to enter into the transportation business and set up the company in 1994. After that, Kiattana started to expand to the transportation of chemical products and energy like crude oil and natural gas for vehicles (NGV), the service of which is provided according to the needs of their customers by 7 branches in Tak, Bang-pain, Rayong, Bangpoo, Lankrabue, Khon Kaen, and Saraburi. With the expertise in transporting specialty goods, the company has been so successful and prospered continuously that it was registered as a public company in 2009. However, the competition in the transportation market has increased nowadays as the growing number of companies have entered into this industry from 20 years ago. Surachet Nainapalert, the Chief Operation Ofcer of Kiattana Transport Public Co., Ltd. said that, despite the continuous increase of new transport companies, a number of them have closed down due to rising costs of trucks, wages, and fuel at present. Nevertheless, with our knowledge, skills, and experience in the transportation of energy and chemical products for a long time as well as continuous development, Kiattana still remains the rst choice in the transportation market.

Kiattana has major transportation routes all over the country, mainly in the East, Central, North, Northeastern, and certain parts in the South. So the selection of trucks is the key. Even though we usually drive on highways, we still need good-quality, highcapacity, and fuel-saving trucks. From our past experience in using almost all brands because of being open-minded, we recognise that western trucks are more efcient, safer, stronger, and has more fuel economy. Also, from customers perspectives, western trucks are more reliable and efcient. At Lankrabue where 18 Scania long-haulage trucks are used and the maintenance agreement is signed, it is conrmed that Scania has good safety system and that the level of fuel consumption is also satisfactory. When its time to change lubricant or perform other types of maintenance, technicians will come in to provide services. Therefore, we do not have to worry about performing any maintenance ourselves. By the end of last year, Larnkrabue branch ordered 5 more Scania P380 6x2 trucks. said Surachet. Another issue of great attention is our drivers. For me, being a driver is a prestigious and important career, although, in the past, people might view that truck drivers were teamsters driving fast. Now, the transportation industry grows so quickly that there are not enough personnel. These drivers should be knowledgeable, skillful, well-experienced, and possess the level-4 license permitting the transportation of dangerous article prescribed by the law, which is the specialty ability. Kiattana is a family. We have managers taking care of the drivers closely. In addition to the accommodation for the drivers and their families so that they do not

have trouble commuting, there is other welfare. Finding goodquality trucks is also another way of showing our attention to them. Surachet continued to say that many drivers love Scanias modern long haulage equipped with the system assisting them to drive more comfortably, making them less exhausted and not stressed out. Our company has integrated the working style to be international but still follow the Thai tradition in taking care of our employees. Regarding the new challenge for Kiattana during the time of facing the increase in costs together with the trade liberalization of Asean Economic Community (AEC) in the future, Surachet said that, despite being long established in this business, we have never stopped looking for new innovations if they are for the better. We are not only studying the concept of AECs trade liberalisation but also revising our vision, strategy, and everything related to the administration for new management in order to deal with future changes. Moving forward, it is signicant that we have to standardise the knowledge of employees in the company so that they have the same level of understanding and share the same common goal. Without help from our partners, suppliers, customers, society or communities, we wouldnt be where we are now, as it is reected in our slogan, We Grow Together.

Furthermore to Surachets interesting viewpoint and useful tip, we had a great opportunity to interview Kasemsan, Branch Manager, Kiattana Transport, who told us another signicant tip working in transportation business. He said that providing good quality trucks is as signicant as offering them good care. At Larnkrabue, we use Scania for transporting crude oil and NGV. The rst eet in Series 4 has been in operation for more than 9 years while the use of new G Series started in January. We have made a contract service agreement right after we have gotten the trucks. This is so that the trucks will be maintained during the entire period of operation. However, the repair is rare and the only maintenance is changing lubricant, which is not different from the new trucks. Scania also sends their professionals to train our drivers constantly, hence they are well-trained. He ends his conversation with his kind message As I said earlier that we cant only have just quality trucks but we need quality drivers as well. Using a good quality truck will enhance drivers quality of life as they are 24/7 with the trucks. A good quality truck comes with a good after-sales service. It doesnt only give condence to owners and safety to the company but also gives a better life quality which some organization over look this fact. Kiattanas careful thought has shown us the essential traits to be a great pioneer and leader in transportation business in Thailand. Although the end of the road is still further away, Kiattana is not stepping back but looking beyond every obstacle and walking further ahead. With their high standards in the business, we believe they will step up in the international market.

However, the repair is rare and the only maintenance is changing lubricant, which is not different from the new trucks.
Kasemsan Maneesak Larnkarbue Branch Manager, Kiattana Transport

PATSB Receives Second Scania R500 V8 B-Double

Gurmit Singh Director of PATSB

Make it two please PATSB has recently received its second Scania R500 V8 B-Double, the longest LPG trucks in Malaysia

N 2010, Pengangkutan Aliran Teraju Sdn Bhd (PATSB) invested in a Scania R500 V8 B-Double which makes it Malaysias longest Liqueed Petroleum Gas (LPG) truck at 25 meters in total length. Gurmit Singh, Director of PATSB was so pleased with his rst purchase that he placed an order for a second Scania truck of the same model. Recently when his second Scania R500 V8 B-Double was delivered, we caught up with Gurmit to nd out why he decided to purchase the second truck, and what plans he had for future investments. PATSB is a transporter of loose cargo and LPG cylinders established in December 1996, and is contracted to transport LPG cylinders between Kuala Lumpur and Melaka for Petronas LPG stockist Pusaka Sdn. Bhd. Prior to his rst purchase, Gurmit was rst introduced to the Scania R500 V8 when he attended the launch of Petronas Dagangan Bhds B-Double trailer for its oil-tankers back in 2009. Upon further enquiry and research he found that the Scania R500 V8 meets his business requirements of transporting LPG cylinders, also on a B-Double platform. Impressed and convinced, Gurmit nally made his rst investment on the Scania R500 V8 B-Double in the year 2010. A year-and-a-half on, Gurmit went on to invest in a second Scania R500 V8 B-Double. I am happy that I have made a good business decision says Gurmit when asked on how he fared from his rst of the two trucks, which had obviously prompted him on the second. The maintenance is relatively low while the uptime is fantastic as I only have to visit a Scania workshop three times a year for a scheduled maintenance service, with the trucks averaging 600km/day, he added, expecting the same level of returns from the second R500 V8 as his rst for scheduled maintenance intervals.

Scania Siam Leasing takes your business even further

The proud owner of two Scania R500 V8 B-Double, Gurmit Singh, Director of PATSB (left) seen here with the owner of Petronas LPG Stockist, Pusaka Sdn. Bhd.

In line with PATSBs safety standards, the full-range of the Scania R500 V8 safety features complements his decision further with ESP, ABS and Lane Departure Warning come standard just to name a few. Gurmit is also convinced with the complete package of products and services that Scania provides. The prompt and good after sales services give me peace-of-mind in view of roadside emergencies in this nature of business, and the fact that the 24/7 roadside assistance manned by professionals in a nationwide network gives me just that. In addition, Scania also provides comprehensive drivers training to help my drivers know the trucks better, enabling them to operate it at optimum level, he said. On top of all these, Gurmit sees the increased productivity of his business by utilising the Scania R500 V8 B-Double adds up to the reason to invest in the second Scania R500 V8. Based on the results of his rst truck, the Scania R500 V8 B-Double is able to carry 65% more load than regular LPG semi-trucks. Thats a whopping 1,155 LPG cylinders every trip as opposed to 700 on regular trucks he beams. There were also savings on fuel cost as he spends 25 sen of Malaysian Ringgit (RM0.25) per cylinder now in comparison to RM0.35 per cylinder on regular trucks, all thanks to the higher amount of loads the Scania R500 V8 B-Double carries every trip. Gurmit has got some strategic plans to increase the productivity of PATSB too.

We are currently working to further increase the load capacity of the Scania R500 V8 B-Double to 75% more than regular LPG semi-trucks, which takes the load up to 1,225 cylinders per trip, he mentions. Not surprisingly, the truck is still very powerful under full load, and is even more comfortable than my own sedan car, he quips. Judging by the increased productivity of its business and further potentials, it is not hard to work out how PATSB can drive the gures even higher with the addition of the second Scania R500 V8 B-Double. With the potential of twice the amount of productivity to be

delivered, we cant help but to ask Gurmit if he intends to expand PATSBs Scania R500 V8 B-Double eet. He shares that the Malaysian Road Transport Department had issued only six permits for such trucks, and he have obtained three of them. With one more permit still in hand, we might soon invest on a third unit, he comments. Having heard that, one might be seeing triples of PATSBs Scania R500 V8 B-Double on the road in the not too distant future!

INTERVIEW

Text: Phakkavee Ritdee Photo: Varavudh Lattanand Translation: Cheewin Amornsinha

Update

I love everything about Scania ; the design, the safety, obviously everything!
Paleerut Klumsook

ITS MY LIFE, ITS MY DRIVE

In this bad economic situation, it is not surprising to see lots of women doing jobs you may never imagine they could do. Paleerut Klumsook, a mother of 3 children, aged 48 years old from Kanjanaburi has fought with all her heart and strength to survive in this economy. Her job is a bus driver and of course it is a Scania!
My husband was a truck driver and I have always sat beside him. So one day I asked him to teach me how to drive a truck because I have driven a van before. Once he had to move to a different city to work, I didnt think it was a good thing for our children to move, and if he wasnt there to provide for the family then it was my duty to do so. After that I went for a test and had been trained professionally. I passed the test in the year 1989 and my first job was to drive a 10-wheel-truck. Family and her children are the main reasons she decided to work as a truck driver, which is normally a mans job. I work for my children, but before I had them, I always had a passion in driving, she told us. Her experience in driving is no less than other men. I have been driving since 1989 from 10-wheel to a chemical truck. Ive got a grade C driving license, of course it is more risky, but I earn more for that. Until lately my sisters friend asked me to join Pasan tour company, so I tried my luck. First they were quite surprised as I am a woman but with my previous experience they took me in. She smiled. Being the only woman-driver in the company of course, requires more effort to be able to

prove to her colleagues and also customers. She surprised us with the fact that her male colleagues have not treated her differently. They treated me the same because they see my ambitions and my endeavor to work in this position. The customers always seem to be surprised to see a driver being a woman. Some of them even gave me a compliment for taking them to their destination safe and sound. Other drivers, apart from being surprised, also questioned whether it is just a typical Japanese bus with a Scania logo or it is actually a real Scania. They are just being too jealous. she laughed. I love everything about Scania; the design, the safety, obviously everything! she told us when we asked her why she is so in love with her bus. One particular thing I love the most are the brakes. It really gives me condence that it will never fail me. The secret to my success is that you have to be condent in what you do. Then people will accept for who you are. She will also be available to give training to any woman who wants to try out. I have been trained like any other. Whatever they can do, Im sure I can too. I am 175cm tall so I can do a mans job, sometimes even better than men. I am a calm

and caring driver, possibly because I am a mother. I feel like its my responsibility to bring them to their destination safe and sound. Before we ended the interview, Paleerut would like us to pass her thoughtful message to all drivers. The driver has to concentrate behind the wheel. Peoples lives are in our hands and it is our responsibility to drive safely. Everyone loves their lives. So be more careful. She adds, and keep smiling, to your customers and to everyone. Spread the happiness and it will be such an amazing road trip.

Scania trucks are synonymous with reliability, safety, robustness and comfort through superior technology.
