AM LETTER FROM THE TE

Take it outside!
Psst! Were about to let you in on a not-so-well-kept industry secret: Due to deadlines, magazine writers often have to create their articles in advance. So, as we write this, what is hopefully the last snow of the season is just finishing dumping inches of the soggy white stuff all over our state. But, by the time you read this, the snow now littering our streets will hopefully be nothing more than a vague memory you shrug off while basking in the tender warmth of the late spring/early summer sun. What better time than now to enjoy that sun? Bookended by April (Garden Month) and June (Great Outdoors Month), May itself is chockfull of great outside activities and celebrations. Here are just a few events that might prompt you and your family to get out and about: Barbecue Month: Grab the veggies and your favorite protein and fire up that grill! Enjoy your barbecue with a refreshing Lime Ginger Zinger, a delicious drink created by Rebecca Brown of Happy Bellies Bake Shop. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month: Celebrate May by trying out a new fitness activity but dont forget proper nutrition! Lisa Jermain with Isagenix shares The smart whey to fuel your workout. If you notice youve plateaued in meeting your fitness goals, consider Rolfing. Certified Rolfer Victoria L. Huss explains how the practice can help properly balance and align the body in A yoga journey through back pain. National Bike Month: Get your road, mountain or other type of bike out of storage, pump up those tires and start cycling. National Pet Month: We humans arent the only ones raring to get outside now that the weather is nicer. Consider taking your four-legged friend for a walk or romp at the dog park. But remember: As is always the case with Wisconsin, the weather can be unpredictable. There undoubtedly will be days when you want to stay inside. You have plenty of options on those occasions too! Museum Day (May 18): Explore your local museum today! Learn About Composting Day (May 29): Both Sarah Everson of Compost Joes and Jennifer Semrau of Winnebago County Solid Waste provide the basics for those interested in starting to compost in Compost: natures way to grow and Home composting. Celiac Awareness Month: Try out the gluten-free lifestyle with our Healthy Eating feature: Mudd Creeks Fiesta Chicken Tacos with Mango Slaw, by Danielle Lythjohan. Learn more about going gluten-free in the Natural Expressions article, Is wheat gluten bad? written by Grandma Rose. We hope these and the rest of this months Natures Pathways articles help you enjoy the most out of May!

Is your thyroid working optimally?

You could have hypothyroidism and not know it; get the right tests to nd out!
By Randi Mann, NP

o you feel frustrated because you are gaining weight 10 pounds or more in the past three months without an explainable cause and feel exhausted most of the time? Do you have mood swings, brain fog, anxiety, depression, constipation and cold hands and feet? How about signs of hormone imbalances such as PMS, low sex drive and irregular periods? Or joint and muscle pain, dry skin, brittle splitting fingernails and excessive hair loss?

If so, you have a lot in common with many of my patients. The thyroid gland is an endocrine organ that sits in the front of your neck, below your Adams apple, and produces thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are the hormones of metabolism and they regulate speed of function of your cells and your body temperature. How well your thyroid is functioning is related to every cell in your body, and if your thyroid is not working

well, you will not feel well and be at higher risk for Alzheimers disease, cardiac disease and many other illnesses. There are many reasons for the symptoms mentioned earlier, but the most common is that the cells in your body are not receiving the right message or enough stimulation from a thyroid hormone called triiodothyronine (T3). This hormone is primarily converted from another hormone made in the thyroid gland called thyroxine (T4). T4 is activated by a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that is released by your pituitary gland. Twenty percent of T3 comes from the thyroid secretion, while the rest comes from T4 when T4 is converted into T3 in peripheral organs such as the liver and the kidneys. Low levels of T3 and T4 signal the pituitary to release more TSH, while high levels of circulating T3 and T4 signal the pituitary to stop the release of TSH. It is possible to measure your thyroid levels in your blood including TSH, free T4, and free T3 (FT3). If you have been under a great deal of stress, it is also a good idea to measure a hormone called reverse T3 (RT3), as your body may be converting your T4 into more RT3 in an effort to slow your stressed body down. RT3 competes with FT3 at your cell receptor sites and is a place holder hormone as opposed to an activating hormone. If present in large amounts, it can block the activating FT3 from telling your cells what to do. If your TSH is in the upper

... if your thyroid is not working well, you will not feel well and be at higher risk for Alzheimers disease, cardiac disease and many other illnesses.
range of normal, this may signal that you are starting to have thyroid problems. Many functional medicine providers prefer to see your TSH between 1 and 2 or 2.5, depending on the reference range of the laboratory. It is also possible that your thyroid gland is under attack from your own immune system. This attack can eventually lead to your thyroid being so damaged that it cannot function. Autoimmune thyroid disease includes Hashimotos thyroiditis and Graves disease. Hashimotos thyroiditis is the most common autoimmune disease, the most common cause of hypothyroidism and is becoming more prevalent. This can be picked up by a blood test called thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb). If you have autoimmune thyroid disease, it may be very important to eliminate gluten from your diet as many people who do so have been able to see their antibodies drop significantly, signifying that the attack on the thyroid is lessening and hence less damage is taking place. The thyroid hormones also interact with your adrenal hormones (such as cortisol and DHEA) and sex hormones (such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone) to keep in balance. If your estrogen is too high (a condition some call estrogen dominance) or your cortisol is routinely elevated due to stress, it can cause havoc with your thyroid hormone output. Keeping all of

your hormones in balance with a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise and taking a pharmacy-grade multivitamin with adequate zinc, selenium and iodine is essential. If your thyroid test results come back normal, but you have many of the symptoms described in this article, please consider seeing a functional medicine practitioner who may be able to guide you. The Thyroflex test, a way to measure the speed of the deep tendon reflex of the arm, can help assess intracellular thyroid function. This can be very helpful to diagnose a thyroid condition if your lab results are normal but your symptoms are obvious. Please dont ignore your thyroid symptoms; seek help to figure out the cause and feel better!

Do-ityourself organic lawn care

By Todd Rockweit

he first step in switching from conventional to natural, organic lawn care is to assess the quality of the existing lawn. If an existing lawn contains few weeds and consists of desirable turfgrass species, natural, organic methods and cultural practices can maintain a good lawn. If a lawn has excessive weeds and/or consists of undesirable turfgrass species, it may be best to initially take a more aggressive approach or start over. While the second option is rather aggressive, the fresh start and healthy turf will be worth it. After addressing lawn quality, the next step is assessing soil quality. A number of inexpensive soil test kits are readily available; however, they generally will not provide enough information to help benchmark your current soil requirements and provide you with a roadmap to a successful lawn care program. Without knowing what is right and what is wrong with your existing soil, you may be wasting your time and money. For the purpose of this article, I will recommend a program based on a nine-year database of soil tests taken from the Fox Cities and the surrounding area. Most lawns found in the Fox Valley are lacking nutrients like nitrogen, calcium and potassium. Our soils are also poor in structure, which is a result of high clay, low organic matter and a poor balance between calcium and magnesium. Based on those findings, my general recommendations for starting a do-it-yourself organic lawn care program are as follows:

on the product. The fertilizer is typically applied in early spring and applied at a rate of 5 to 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet depending on the nitrogen content.

Summer Feed the soil

What creates a sustainable lawn is healthy, biologically rich soil. Creating an environment that the biology thrives in is the key to a healthy lawn. There are a number of ways to accomplish this. Compost tea inoculates the soil with added beneficial organisms and, if done correctly, feeds the organisms and plants, creating a less stressful environment for both; this results in healthy, productive plants and a sustainable soil. If compost tea is not available to you, improve organic matter by top dressing with compost and/ or humates. Apply compost tea throughout the growing season at a rate of 2 gallons per 1,000 square feet. Top dress with -inch compost at least one time per year until a sufficient organic matter percentage is achieved (5 to 6 percent).

Fall Amend the soil

Spring Feed the plants

Apply all-natural organic fertilizer, which utilizes water insoluble nitrogen and zero phosphorus. The application rate will depend on the deficiencies found on your soil test and the recommendations

Natures Pathways | May 2014

Fall is a great time to do a number of soil structure amendments if compacted soils are the problem. Aeration is the quickest way to deal with soil structure issues like compaction. Aeration opens up the soil allowing air and moisture to get deeper into the root zone which helps with loosening up tight soils. While the soil is open due to aeration, its also a great time to add humates and calcium (gypsum). If your grass is thin and has a number of bare spots throughout, overseeding with good quality C3 grasses like bluegrass and perennial rye is recommended. If available, add mycorrhizal fungi to the seed mix to enhance plant vigor and soil

structure. Apply seed in late fall at a rate of 2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet; however, give yourself enough warm days to insure complete seed germination.

abundance of dandelions. The best approach to eliminate weeds is to improve your soil through an appropriate balance of biology and nutrients and improving soil texture and structure. This takes time if your soil is out of balance. The organic approach is not a quick fix; its a healthy and safe alternative approach to chemicals which benefits our family and our environment. Having said that, here are some tools to get rid of weeds without chemicals: Total eradication using nonselective sprays or solarizing techniques Spot weeding with nonselective sprays, flaming or mechanical tools Soil modification that gets to the root of the problem Overseeding with new grass seed to crowd out weeds Mowing at an appropriate height (3 to 4 inches) and bagging only occasionally (first cut of the year, right after dandelions go to seed, right before winter) Good luck and happy growing! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Call us at 920-730-3253 or 888-200-0446.

Watering

Turf is just like any other plant and it requires water to maintain its vigor and appearance, especially Kentucky bluegrass, which is in most of our lawns. I recommend deep, infrequent waterings in the morning only with 3/4 to 1 inch of water one to two times per week. Overwatering leads to soil compaction and disease. During extreme heat, water more frequently for shorter periods, or simply let your grass go dormant.

A word about weeds

Since the 1940s, traditional lawn care has feasted on a one-size-fitsall approach to weed control that paints every plant with the same broad stroke. The EPA estimates, however, that only 2 percent of the active ingredients in synthetic weed killers, which are called herbicides, ever reach the target plant. The other 98 percent goes into the soil, the ground water and the atmosphere. Organic land care specialists believe that the best tool against weeds is a healthy grass plant which can only happen with healthy soils. That takes time, especially on yards that have an abundance of weeds. Weeds are telling you something about your yard. Each weed seed is genetically programmed to replace specific deficiencies in the soil. For example, if your lawn is missing nitrogen, nature will often send in clover or one of its cousins in the legume family of plants, which can trap and process nitrogen from the atmosphere. If your lawn has too much nitrogen, nature will likely give you an

Choosing joy in your relationships

By Roger Wyer

ature is awakening nows a terrific time to awaken your relationship too! You can take a big leap forward together quickly when you simply follow joy in every decision you make. Choosing joy to light the way in your relationships changes everything. Its not always easy, but it does always shift the situation often in wondrous ways you could not have predicted. Joy has something to do with our deepest connection with who we truly are. Its not a feel-good moment or a way to forget our troubles. Joy lives at the core of us. It is what we seek. If you are spiritual at all, you experience joy all around you, as though the Creator planted it there in endless forms to guide your awakening. Joy is part of the ground of our being. Joy is gentle. Joy is powerful. Everything that shows up today either moves us toward our joy or temporarily blocks it. And, joy is infectious. Its difficult to hold fear or anger when joy is around. Joy is our natural state, so choosing joy has much to do with allowing that which wants to be.

a joyful marriage; what else is worth your attention? Your new vows will describe what a joyful marriage means for you and your spouse. The two of you may not have ever considered what a joyful marriage means. It may take a little while to come to a shared understanding. Begin now. Without doubt, joy is what we seek. To the extent we feel joy, the way is open for connection and love. To the extent it is missing, we suffer. When you can consciously stop and notice your joy, youre ready to mindfully use it as the measure of every decision you make. Wheres the joy in this? Wheres the joy if I choose that? Following your joy will help you stay on track. Awareness of your joy will enable you to begin nurturing and growing. What things, people or situations tend to block your joy? What do you do to quickly recover your joy? How do you communicate your joy to your partner? How do you help each other stay on track? What will you do to maximize your joy to open the window and let it shine?

Your wedding vows serve you best when they reflect who you are as individuals and as a couple: both today and as a vision of your future together. Your vows describe your deepest thoughts and feelings about marriage, and state the promises you make to each other all in support of creating the joyful marriage of your dreams. Writing your vows and planning a ceremony to renew them can be a wonderful time of growth and sharing with your partner. These moments can be quite romantic. Use them to deepen your relationship and clarify your desires. When you devote yourselves to working together on your vows, the words and actions you choose will hold their meaning for years to come. You deserve a joyful life and a joyful marriage. In times of trouble and in times of celebration, you can return to your vows over and over for guidance and support.

Preparing for disaster

By Karen M. Strickfaden, DVM

atural and manmade disasters can change lives in an instant. These disasters include tornadoes, floods and gas leaks. One of the most common disasters is house fires. If you need to evacuate from your home, will you have what you need to care for

your pets? It is important to include plans for your pets when planning for disaster. Prepare a kit that will include everything your pets may need in the 72 hours after disaster strikes. Have that kit ready so that you can easily take it with you in the event of an evacuation.

Determine where your pets will stay if you have to leave your home. Many emergency shelters cannot take in pets due to health and safety concerns. Find out which hotels accept pets. Contact friends and family members to see if they will care for your pets during an emergency. Keep your pets up-to-date on vaccines in case they need to stay at a boarding facility. Make sure your pets have identification on them at all times. Consider microchipping your pets. Microchipping is a permanent form of identification that cannot fall off or be removed from your pet. Include your pets in your evacuation drills. Coordinate with neighbors who can take care of your pets if you are not home when disaster strikes. Place stickers on your windows or doors alerting emergency personnel that there are pets inside the home.

things in the evacuation kit: Important documents Phone numbers for your veterinarian, boarding facilities and hotels that allow pets Your pets vaccination records Photos of your pets Lists of feeding and medication schedules for each pet Pet care items Pet food Drinking water Can opener (for canned food) Treats Toys Pet beds/blankets Leashes Cat litter box Cat litter Litter scoop Pet medications Pet first-aid kit Evacuating livestock and exotic pets can require a little extra planning. To develop disaster plan and evacuation kits for these

pets, go to www.mspca.org and search for Evacuation Essentials.

After a disaster

Be aware that animals may act dramatically different after a disaster. They may become defensive or aggressive. Familiar scents may have changed, and this can confuse and disorient your pets. Examine your animals for injuries like cuts, burns or smoke inhalation. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect your pets have been hurt in the disaster. Allow your pets to have uninterrupted sleep to recover from the trauma. Check the area for debris that may harm your pets. Sharp objects, chemicals, contaminated water or downed power lines pose a threat to your animals. Check for damage to fences to ensure that your pets dont escape from the yard or that dangerous wildlife doesnt wander into your yard.

to collect important phone numbers, create an evacuation kit and discuss your disaster plan with neighbors. For help developing a plan, go to www.RedCross.org, www.Ready. gov or www.HSUS.org (Humane Society of the United States). Pets are important parts of our families. They depend on us for their safety. It is important for their sakes, and for ours, that we take time to plan what we will do in the event of evacuation. Having and practicing a disaster plan is the best way to keep you and your pets out of danger.

Softening and surrendering as a way to heal

By Stephen Kastner

e human animals seem to have a much harder time releasing trauma than do other living creatures in the wild. In Waking the Tiger, author Dr. Peter A. Levine describes the way wild felines experience the coming and going of a threat: tensing in response to danger and as the threat passes, the tigers muscles shake, twitch and let go, right then and there, letting go of the fear-related energy which now is forever out of mind and body. Unreleased trauma is typically at the root of disruptions in human health and peace of mind, denying us the capacity to live a joyful and creative life. The rise of trauma energy and its accompanying emotions can become locked within our brain and retained throughout our bodys musculature, nervous system and organs hoping for release. Instead, we clench and retain the stress, manifesting it in aches and pains, sleep disorders, cardiac problems, poor digestion, weak respiration and immune system weakness. The longer I do bodywork, reiki and most recently, begin to apply the techniques of sound healing, I have come to realize that a huge thread is common to all of these restorative modalities, explains wellness therapist Gina Armstrong. In

order for real healing to occur, the recipient must learn how to enter into a safe, secure, virtual space one that permits them to soften their body, to release and relax the ever-present grip of their mind. As a physician with more than 20 years of medical practice as an observation point, author Dr. Judith Orloff sees surrendering as the missing part of the healing equation. Im intrigued with the idea of surrender, not as defeat or loss as it is frequently

thought of but as a positive, intuitive way of living, says Orloff. Contrary to common stereotypes that equate surrender with weakness, in her latest book, The Ecstasy of Surrender, she presents surrendering as a way to gain mastery of your life. People dont think surrender will work because they fear giving up power, she explains. Our brains are not only divided into

hemispheres, but we also have three distinct interconnected and interlinked layers or sections that regulate behavior. All three have specific functions that relate and interact with each other. At the core is the earliest reptilian brain, which is responsible for what evolutionary biologists describe as a typical mammals four basic drives, the four Fs: feeding, fighting, fleeing and fornicating the autonomic behaviors necessary for survival of the species. Comprised of the upper brainstem including the hypothalamus, basal ganglia and part of the olfactory system, its also responsible for involuntary responses such as your heartbeat and breathing. The limbic system of the brain, the middle section that first emerged in mammals, is in charge of emotion and motivation, as well as learning and memory. The outer layer, called the neo-mammalian brain consists of the neo-cortex and the connected thalamus. It is responsible for complex stimulus analysis, abstract and rational thought, language, introspection, creation, manifestation, imagination, awareness, development, empathy, and most importantly,

consciousness. Trauma may result from any manner of unexpected occurrences: accidents, invasive medical procedures, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, war, natural disasters, loss, birth trauma, or the corrosive stressors of ongoing fear and conflict. Levine has developed a therapeutic system he calls Somatic Experiencing, which explains that trauma is not caused by the event itself, but rather develops through the failure of the body, psyche and nervous system to process and release these adverse experiences. Our brain simply gets stuck in the fight, flight, freeze or collapse responses. Although humans are similarly designed to rebound from high-intensity survival states, we also have the problematic ability to neo-cortically override the natural discharge of excess survival energy. Through rationalizations, judgments, shame, enculturation and fear of our bodily sensations, the human nervous system may not reset like that of a tiger after an overwhelming trauma. Exhale instead of clench, explains Orloff. This doesnt mean giving up or giving in it means accepting what is and trying to do

your best with as much faith and hope that you can muster. Western cultures habits of over-intellectualizing, over-controlling and pushing so hard that you sabotage and exhaust yourself do not work. I instruct my clients to use their breath, concentrating on the flow as I work on their body either with massage therapy, myofascial release or with sound healing, explains Gina Armstrong. As they soften the guarding patterns that are stored within their body, the mind gently dissipates stress with greater ease. One of the most important changes we can make is to go from seeing surrender as sign of defeat to seeing it as a land of victory inside ourselves. Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Coaxing kids into eating their fruits and veggies and understanding the benets of walking
By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: I am a busy mother of three and usually do most of the cooking for the family. I commonly find that my kids do not eat their fruits and vegetables when I cook them. Do you have any suggestions for ways I can incorporate fruits and vegetables into meals so they will actually eat them? Answer: Youre not alone! Many parents find it hard to feed their children the proper amount of fruits and vegetables. Lets face it, most children will never choose a side of broccoli over a side of macaroni and cheese. So what can parents do? Begin by finding the foods your kids enjoy most, such as pizza, popsicles or dessert, and then try adding in fruits and veggies to these staples. For instance, instead of ordering a plain cheese pizza, try adding toppings such as mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, olives or even pineapple to increase their fruit and veggie intake. During the summer, Popsicles can be a real hit for kids. Try making your own by adding strawberries, raspberries or blueberries to your favorite fruit juice and freezing in ice pop molds. If your family loves desserts, try adding whole fruit to the dessert, or make a dessert from a fruit base. Yogurt parfaits, strawberry shortcake or even making your own ice cream out of frozen bananas is a great way to make dessert more healthful for the entire family. What about breakfast? Kids love smoothies, and smoothies provide an easy platform for sneaking in whatever kinds of fruits and vegetables you have around the house! Try adding some greens to their smoothie, like spinach or kale, which have energyboosting compounds to kick-start their morning. I know what youre thinking, youre worried adding vegetables will make their smoothie taste bad. In reality, the sweetness of the fruit you add will disguise the bitterness of any vegetables, so add those veggies!

The best thing about these tricks is your kids will never even notice that their favorite foods have been redesigned and are more healthful with a handful of fruits and vegetables in each serving. Question: I really enjoy walking, but does it provide any real health benefits? Answer: If walking works for you, it works for me! Truly, fitness all starts with finding something you wont mind doing! Walking has many hidden benefits that most people overlook because its low impact and so easy to get started. Most people falsely assume that in order to be healthy and prevent disease, they need to perform rigorous cardio activity, but this is not always the case. Recent studies indicate that frequent walkers have lower rates of heart attacks and strokes than those who dont walk as often, as well as lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Walking is also is great for keeping the weight off. Most people would never think taking a 30-minute walk during your lunch break or after work could do much good, but that walk can slice off anywhere from 100-200 calories, depending on your pace and how much you weigh. An extra 100-200 calories burned each day can go a long way to prevent weight gain and keep you staying slim, especially if its more than youve done before. Another benefit of this simple exercise is that it keeps your bones strong and dense as you age, helping to prevent osteoporosis.
www.naturespathways.com

Although it has many physical benefits, walking can do wonders for mental health as well. Going for a walk can be very relaxing and can easily lighten your mood when youre feeling stressed or anxious. Even better, walking has shown to improve mental clarity and cognition. As you can see, adding a brisk, 30-minute walk to your daily routine can do wonders for your health in the long run. But, if you cant find a stretch of 30 minutes, go smaller and move whenever you can. Stringing three 10-minute bouts together throughout the day can be equally impactful. You simply cant go wrong with this easy, enjoyable exercise that you can do anywhere at any time!

Understanding pain, according to Oriental medicine

By Sarah Atkinson C.A.

cupuncturists graduate with their Oriental medicine (OM) degree and enter the world to begin their journey of helping people heal. One way acupuncturists can help their patients is to provide relief from pain. The nervous system lets us know when there is a blockage within our bodies that needs our attention, and it is this blockage that results in pain signals. Pain can present itself in many ways, such as being sharp, burning, stabbing, achy or numb. The different pain presentations each have their own unique cause and treatment plan, according to OM. Wisconsins wide variety of weather conditions can be very difficult on our bodies. Through winter and spring we are exposed to a very cold and damp environment. When pain symptoms increase during this time of the year, one common diagnosis is an invasion of cold damp bi (pain). This type of pain typically affects our joints, making them stiff and achy. If the pain symptoms have become irritated or worse during the bitter cold winter, an acupuncturist would diagnose and treat this pattern with points that provide warmth and nourish the body. The use of moxibustion, a specific acupuncture technique involving burning a Chinese herb on acupoints, is useful to warm the channels and provide optimal healing.

Another common type of pain we see presented in the clinic is due to trauma. Overuse or excessive tension within a tendon or muscle can result in many slight tears of the microfibers, which can result in a swollen and inflamed area. A common acupuncture technique is to surround the injured area with acupuncture needles and to needle some distal points on the affected channel to release the stagnation. This kind of pain is best healed by dispersing the excess swelling and increasing the flow of blood in the painful area. When our bodies get run down, pain can often be the result of the bodys overall weakened or deficient state. This weakening can occur from overdoing anything or from exposure to the stressors in our daily lives or environment. Stress, whether physical or emotional, can weaken our immune system and let pathogenic factors (e.g., coldness, dampness) into our bodies, which can transform into pain. In addition to protecting ourselves from the weather, we also need to avoid things such as preservatives and chemicals in food, or negative and unsupportive people. Your acupuncturist will do a thorough intake and ask many questions to determine the possible causes of a deficiency and come up with the best treatment strategy. Acupuncturists have many years of training in this art and possess the knowledgeable skills necessary to transform this imbalance and restore health. Spring is the time of year that is the most challenging of the seasonal changes on our bodies. The long winter drains our energy and the transition from a slower state into a more active one needs to be supported by a well-functioning digestive system. Our digestive organs are important to transform our food and drink into nourishment to support our bodies. The deficiency of this system may result in an overall fatigue and malnourishment of the muscles and tendons, which leave us open for injury. As you can see, according to Oriental medicine, pain isnt just

one thing. A skilled acupuncturist is able to ask questions, assess, diagnose and identify what type of pain the patient is suffering from. Your treatment plan may involve acupuncture, Chinese herbs, applying heat, Gua Sha or cupping. So, whether you suffer from acute or chronic pain, your acupuncturist can come up with a treatment plan that will help relieve pain, restore health and get you back on track today!

Traveling with children

By Meridith Starling

ven though Mother Nature may not be on board, we are all certain that summer is near: The countdown has begun for summer break! This being said, as an avid traveler, I have a few words of advice for you. I have done my fair share of road trips over the years. As soon as our son turned 2 and the airlines charged for his ticket, we started driving from Michigan and Wisconsin to Tennessee. What Ive learned on these nine-plus hour drives was priceless to me and my family. I hope it will be the same to you!

Take your time and add at least an hour to what your GPS tells you

We tend to hold ourselves to the timeframe estimated by our GPS. However, these estimates do not take traffic, weather or time changes into account. I find it better to ignore the time clock because it adds pressure, and when on vacation, do we really need to be held to the clock, anyway?

Plan for the unexpected

child, we learned this lesson the hard way. We ran out of snacks, had a kiddo needing to potty and we were all getting ants in our pants. We sat outside the White Sox stadium long enough to catch the score of two innings true story! Now we pack extra snacks and water, pick our favorite places to stop (even if we dont think we need to at the time), pick road side attractions to visit like Mars Cheese Castle fascinating for not only buying cheese, but people watching! Also remember to take car chargers for those iPads and DVD players that have a great hypnotizing effect on children. This dials down the Are we there yet? naggings.

It is easier said than done, when trapped in a car, to tell your children that you are taking away the items that are keeping them somewhat occupied in the car. I can recall a trip with our then 3-year-old who was being defiant by kicking the back of my seat. Looking back, he was being a typical kid who needed to get out of the car and burn off energy. I decided that taking away his movie until he apologized would be a good move. Forty-five minutes later and over 100 My movie! cries, I realized that we had just punished all of us! To avoid meltdowns, I suggest taking at least one 10-minute break from the car for every two hours traveled. Not only do our children need to run off energy, we do too! your kids before buckling up. Prepare them for the car ride. You can curb poor behavior by preparing them for what is ahead, and avoid trying to figure out how to discipline a child because timeouts dont work in a car! For example, if it is a twohour drive, explain to them that it will take the length of one movie. If it is a longer drive, equate it to the school day. and frustration. My mom made us a copy of a piano CD that would calm our son down quickly as a baby. I made sure that I had this CD in whatever car we took on our road trips. I also made our own playlist with songs that we all enjoy and sing along to, too. Not the kiddy bop music that can make adults want to plug their ears, but the classics like Life is a Highway. This song is in the Cars movie, so kids love it and it isnt going to remind anyone of nursery rhyme songs that can get stuck in your head forever. I try to set up my playlist with alternating dance type beats to soothing songs by U2, Enya and John Mayer. You can choose whatever suits you! As children get older, having their

own MP3 player and earbuds can also be helpful.

Sometimes feeling the breeze in your hair can be quite calming and refreshing! Just make sure to have a hair tie to avoid tangles. Enjoy the journey and take in the beauty of nature. Each time you travel, try to find one new thing you have never noticed before! I do hope this helps in your upcoming travels!

A beauty treatment t for an empress

Discover the ancient benets of rosewater
By Caitlin Brotz

here are many reasons to fall in love with rosewater and just in time for spring, too. Rosewater has been used throughout history in both the culinary world and the cosmetic world for a variety of reasons. No one knows where rosewaters use originated for sure, but one bit of folklore

When using rosewater after your shower and before your moisturizer, it can remove dirt and other contaminates from deep in the pores.
suggests that an emperor had his citys water canals filled with rosewater to fill the air with its scent for his bride on their wedding day. Upon walking around the waterfalls and canals, his bride noticed an oily film on the surface of the water and dipped her hand in. She fell in love with the aroma and the emperor began bottling rosewater in her honor. The wonderful benefit you will notice when you use rosewater is its ability to instantly alter your mood by provoking all of your senses. I instantly feel myself closing my eyes, taking in a deep breath and enjoying the moment. It seems to have the ability to help muster an emotional strength from within. Besides its incredible aroma, rosewater has so many wonderful benefits. When using rosewater after your shower and before your moisturizer, it can remove dirt and other contaminates from deep in the pores. I like to spray the beauty water onto a cotton ball and do a clean sweep across my skin, removing unwanted residue and leaving me feeling fresh. You may also mist the water directly on your face to hydrate and help create a dewy look. Rosewater is a gentle ingredient that has many users reporting cleaner, softer and more hydrated skin. It is high in vitamin C, which is great at repairing your skins elastin fibers, helping to reduce fine lines. Its no wonder this product has been a staple in the medicine cabinet of so many women throughout the ages. Try it for yourself and be prepared to fall in love.

Overcoming obstacles
By Heather LaFond

t is important to acknowledge that change is almost never a linear process. It is common to make some forward progress only to experience a hiccup and take a few steps or leaps backward. Most obstacles encountered on your journey to health are unavoidable. Even though we may have a concrete plan in place, we cant plan for things that we do not foresee. Lets discuss some of the more frequent obstacles encountered during a lifestyle change and ways to move past them. One of the most common obstacles encountered when making a healthy lifestyle change is doing too much too soon. When we set out to make a change, a lot of times excitement and an extreme sense of motivation can cause us to set up unrealistic expectations. Lifestyle changes are something you are hoping to change permanently. It is because of this that you must approach these changes slowly and with intention. Doing too much too soon may lead to burnout or even worse, an injury from over-training that will set you back physically and mentally. A carefully designed roadmap to your goals will increase the likelihood of your success. For the majority of people, success doesnt happen by chance. You must plan! It is normal for our journey to health to take a few detours, even with a carefully thought-out plan. Without a plan of attack you may find yourself running in circles, getting nowhere near your goal. It is often said that when you fail to plan, plan to fail. Plans should be flexible. Sometimes, we will come across an obstacle and need to be able to adjust our plan to go around it. If something beyond your control gets in the way, you must allow yourself a break to go with it and then regroup. When an obstacle is encountered, it is always a good idea to revisit, revise and re-evaluate your goal. Get yourself back on track right away! Sometimes an obstacle may be the goal itself. Often we create really big goals, which is good! But without smaller goals leading up to them, it may be difficult to track our progress and we may get discouraged. Make sure to have smaller goals allowing for pats on the back of positive reinforcement to encourage your journey to that big, all-encompassing goal. You must prioritize. On some occasions, we create a goal but allow other things to take priority. How important is your goal? If you have been struggling for a long period of time to attain it, maybe it is time to re-evaluate its importance. You can wish for a

flat stomach or to comfortably fit into your skinny jeans until youre blue in the face, but if it isnt important, other things will get in its way. We find time for the things that are important to us. If its not important, we will always find a distraction or an excuse. If your goal has meaning, you will plan. You will set aside time to make it happen. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Obstacles can make or break you. You can learn from them and become stronger, or you can give up and give in. What you choose to do in those moments of weakness determines your success. Be brave, be defiant, be a goal getter! Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise regime.

supported community groups in Green Bay, Appleton and elsewhere and has worked with local elected officials to broaden lawn-centric land use ordinances. She said there are many attractive and constructive ways to use a yard beyond growing high maintenance turf. Natural landscapes can go by many other names, Dantoin noted. An edible landscape provides food or seasonings for your table, but its not a typical, square vegetables-only garden. Rain gardens are designed to hold rainwater, prevent erosion and cut down on the need for irrigation. Permaculture incorporates permanent, small-scale agriculture on small properties. Backyard or urban ag provides food for your family and/or your community. A wildlife garden grows habitat for butterflies and other small, beneficial creatures. What they have in common, and what distinguishes them from your average vegetable garden, is that they all use native plants and perennials; the focus is on beautiful, flowing, nonlinear design rather than utilitarian rows; and they provide benefits in multiple seasons.

But how do you convert your yard from burdensome to beneficial? NWTC Landscape Horticulture instructor David Wright, whose students provide plants for the Green Bay Botanical Garden (among other projects), offers a few tips: 1. Build good soil. Remember to improve your soil before planting by adding compost or organic matter, Wright says. In addition to providing nutrients, mulch suppresses weed development and conserves water saving work for busy gardeners and reducing stress on seedlings. 2. Use native plants in the landscape. What is native is a bit of a moving target, but finding and using plants that are indigenous to an area means that they are adapted to local conditions temperature extremes, rainfall amounts, resistance to common pests, etc. The result is that you need to provide fewer

inputs to create a landscape. For ideas, try www.missouribotanicalgarden.org; you may have to dig a little, but there is some great information there. Also, the Brown County Extension sites are very good. www.browncountyextension.org, www.hort.uwex.edu or www.learningstore.uwex.edu are good examples. 3. Plan for reduced watering. Use plants that are adapted to low-water conditions, called xeriphytic plants. There are a number of plants that require less water, including some that survive arctic conditions. Many succulent species (and there are a number of hardy ones) fall into the low-water category. Sedums, hens and chicks, and yucca would be good examples.
4. Consider edible landscapes. Incor-

porating edible ornamentals into a planting makes sense on a lot of levels. Herbs make great container plants. Many types of thyme are good ground covers. Variegated sages and Swiss chard are very colorful. Ornamental cabbages and peppers create nice fall combinations but the peppers are extremely hot! Cherry or grape tomatoes are good candidates for window boxes or hanging baskets. There are also a number of small fruits that incorporate well in a landscape: blueberries, currents and chokecherry, to name a few.

in sustainability, but there are more benefits to converting a yard or garden to a more sustainable plan. Sustainable gardening is a great community service, providing fresh, low-cost food for others; improving air and water quality; reducing neighbors exposure to pesticides, fertilizers and mower fumes; and building beauty and biodiversity. Sustainable gardeners can also save on household grocery bills and provide easier access to fresh produce, which supports better health.

A yoga journey through back pain

melia* had been practicing yoga three times a week for some time when she realized that one day she could actually move from baby cobra to downward dog in one smooth, strong transition. Previously, back pain and weakness in her core resulting from long periods of sitting behind a desk forced her make that transition in steps. Amelia found herself amazed at

her bodys healing ability. She knew that if she kept at it, she could become stronger and more flexible. But as time passed, she noticed that she seemed to be hitting a plateau in her yoga practice. Amelia had a talk with her yoga teacher about her diminishing returns from her time investment in yoga. Still suffering from back pain, she could not help but feel disappointed that yoga could not help her get to the bottom of her issues. The teacher suggested private lessons to help Amelia with refining specific movements and poses. Those sessions went well, yet the teacher noticed that Amelias movement seemed inhibited and restricted in certain ways. The teacher suggested that Amelia consider a holistic system of balancing and aligning the body called Rolfing Structural Integration, or Rolfing SI. She encouraged Amelia to continue her dedication to yoga practice as she handed her the business card of a local Rolfer. Amelia met with the Rolfer and learned about the Ten Series as a way to help get to the root cause of pain, inflexibility or mobility issues. It made sense to her that just one session wouldnt undo years of habits, emotional clutter and unhealthy movement patterns. She also really liked the fact that Dr. Ida Rolf, the woman who developed the system of Rolfing SI, studied yoga all through the 1920s. Dr. Rolf actually looked to yoga as the cornerstone of her thinking but also realized that the [yoga] asanas did not achieve length and separation of the joints, that in too many cases there was actual contraction of the joint surfaces. Something else was needed. Dr. Rolf s thinking was also influenced by her study of Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais and, most importantly, her research and study of fascia the web of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and protects all of the muscles, bones, nerves, vessels, ligaments, tendons and organs of the body. Amelia was impressed by the depth of human body understanding infused throughout the work of Rolfing SI. She took the plunge and started receiving the work on a biweekly basis all the while continuing her yoga practice. Amelias first session left her feeling airy and light and able to
www.naturespathways.com

breathe more deeply. Her second session helped her legs and feet not cramp so much when trying to balance in her standing yoga poses. Her third session seemed to help her get into the twisting poses more comfortably. Her fourth session helped her to connect more with her pelvic floor. Her fifth session opened up her hip flexors and she found even more ease in her poses as her center of gravity started shifting. Each session opened up more options for moving, standing and being that she just could not reach on her own. Amelia was astounded at the subtlety yet powerfulness of the Rolfing SI experience when combined with yoga. Each and every time she stepped on her mat to practice, Amelia found a renewed sense of wonder and discovery with her process. She experienced a greater connection with her body and breath that more deeply rooted and grounded her yoga practice. She started to find greater expanses of pain-free episodes. And she marveled at healing that really truly came from within. *Name changed to protect privacy.

Getting out of debt and into saving

By Alan M. Zierler

ith summer breezes hopefully around the corner, Christmas 2013, with all its gifts and celebrations, is just a fading memory. Or is it? If youre still paying off your holiday credit card bill or other old debt, youre not alone. In a March 2014 American Household Credit Card Debt Statistics article, nerdwallet.com reported that based on an analysis of Federal Reserve statistics and other government data, the average household owes $7,115 on their cards. The same article notes that credit card debt ranks No. 3 as a personal debt source, surpassed only by student loan debt at $32,986 and mortgage debt at $152,209. Paying a large monthly credit card bill can really take a bite out of your budget. It can also create a vicious cycle of use if you have an emergency and dont have funds set aside. For instance, if the car breaks down, youve got to get to work, right? But if you dont have the money to pay for repairs, how do you pay for it? Charge it. The problem is that when you use your credit card and dont pay off the balance monthly, you end up paying interest in addition to the amount you charged.

Financial planning expert Dave Ramsey recommends what he calls a debt snowball plan, paying off your smallest debt rst, regardless of interest rates.
If you were carrying that average $7,115 balance and paid $200 a month on your bill, it would take you 46 months, just shy of four years, to pay it off. You could settle up as quickly as 12 months by making monthly payments of $635.49, but chances are that if youre carrying that much credit card debt, you probably cant afford a hefty payment every month. Digging your way out of debt can seem like a daunting task, but with some strategy and perseverance, it can be done. Among other online resources, bankrate.com offers a free debt calculator at www.bankrate.com/finance/debt/use-debt-calculator-to-helpreduce-debt.aspx. Financial planning expert Dave Ramsey recommends what he calls a debt snowball plan, paying off your smallest debt first, regardless of interest rates. He recommends paying at least the minimum on all of your other debts while attacking the small debt by paying as much extra on it as possible. After youve cancelled out the smallest debt, go on to the nextsmallest debt, putting the money you were paying on your first debt toward the second one until thats finished too, and so on. Just like you roll a little snowball into a big one, by the time you get to the bills with bigger balances, youll be making bigger payments and thus pay them off sooner. Plus, each time you pay off another bill, youll feel the accomplishment of moving closer to your debt-free goal.

Once youve got your debt in check, focus your efforts on building your savings in order to stay out of debt. An easy way to do that is to simply repurpose the money you were using to pay your debts, depositing that amount into your savings account instead. Many credit unions and banks give you the option of naming your accounts to meet your goals, which is a great way to focus your saving and your spending. Be sure to include both short-term and long-term savings goals so you can take care of immediate needs and also allocate resources for investing. Today is a great day to change your life and get out of debt. Along with credit card debt, if youre paying high interest rates on your car, home or other loans, its time to shop around for a better rate. Talk to a trusted loan officer at your local credit union or bank about refinancing options so you can pay off your balances quicker and start enjoying the benefits of debt-free living.

Your pregnancy, your birth and your voice

By Mary E. Smits, CD, CBE

regnant? Congratulations! If you are more than a few weeks into your pregnancy, youll likely acknowledge that this time of preparation and expansion is no ordinary experience. Pregnancy is an event-filled journey that culminates in the most intimate yet powerful experience of labor and birth. Although your pregnancy has many elements in common with other womens pregnancies, your pregnancy and birth journey is uniquely your own. As a soonto-be birthing mother, have you considered where you want this adventure to take

you? Are you aware that you have a choice in the paths you take along the way? When you embark on the final excursion of this trip labor and birth do you know that you have a voice in choosing the environment, pace, amenities and even the tour guide of your journey? Many people are only familiar with one path to birth: obstetrician, hospital, bed, IV, monitors, epidural, jello, birth, warmer, vitals, hat, swaddle and finally, togetherness. This well-known and predictable road to birth is commonplace in the U.S.,

yet many birth stories that emerge from this routine approach not only lack joy and contentment, but often include quite a bit of distress, dissatisfaction and even trauma. Birth trauma can stem from dramatic birth events; however, trauma can also arise from issues and procedures that some may deem to be insignificant. One key reason for emotional birth trauma is the mother feeling she had no choice regarding the activities and procedures surrounding

her labor and birth. Emotional birth trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder commonly occur when a birthing mother feels as if authorities have taken over her will, leaving her to believe she is not allowed to make choices of her own and is not knowledgeable enough to have a voice in decisions that affect the course of her labor. According to the Birth Trauma Association, it is not always the sensational or dramatic events that trigger childbirth trauma but other factors such as loss of control, loss of dignity, the hostile or difficult attitudes of the people around them, feelings of not being heard or the absence of informed consent to medical procedures. Labor does not need to be this way! Giving birth to your baby can be an empowering, meaningful, intimate and precious event in your life and the life of your partner. You do not need to follow the norm, submit to ritual and sacrifice achieving the best birth experience possible. As lives, traditions and situations vary greatly, birth options that result in an optimal birth

experience vary also. As there are many diverse personalities and circumstances, there are just as many right options in how to labor and birth. To achieve your best birth goal, it is important for you to discover how you want your birth journey to unfold. Explore alternative birth styles, learn about various types of care providers, search for alternative birth environments, discover the options that are right for you and find the courage to voice your will. What is of utmost importance is that you labor and birth your way. As the birthing mother, you have the right to choose your labor path, the right to be informed of procedural risks and benefits and the right to deny procedures. This is best accomplished by finding your voice, speaking up for what you believe will be of the greatest benefit to you, your baby and your partner, along with building a birth team that will offer compassionate, knowledgeable support while respecting your wishes. If you do not know where to start on your journey to your best birth, consider hiring a doula (a professional birth assistant). According to many research studies

published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, having a doula increases overall birth experience satisfaction. Your doula will help you uncover your fears and expectations of birth, provide information on alternative birth options in your area and help you discover for yourself what your labor and birth desires are. Shell support you and encourage you to find your voice when making the choices and decisions that are right for you. Above all, remember: It is your pregnancy, your birth and your voice.

Miracles for Madison

By Kathi Bloy

adison Leigh Gerrits, barely a year old, suffered a nearfatal head injury at 5 months of age. She is now recovering at home, where her mother, Melissa Gerrits, said she is healing in leaps and bounds beyond the projected milestones. After the accident, Madison was diagnosed with West syndrome, a rare epileptic condition associated with spasms and cognitive disabilities. Gerrits, who worked full time before the accident, said she has dropped to part-time to take care of Madison. She moved in with her mother, Nancy Degrave, to be able to support Madison on her limited income. Gerrits best friend, Kelly Chartre, is heading up a Celebration of Support for baby Madison with help from Community Benefit Tree (CBT). What has impressed Chartre most, she said, is that Degrave and Jeff Gerrits, Melissas father, and their significant others, have come together to create a beautiful grandparent scenario for Madison. It is absolutely touching. Both Degrave and Jeff Gerrits are on the committee to plan Miracles for Madison, the benefit event that will take place May 10 at Tanners Grill and Bar in Kimberly.

Chartre described Gerrits as an overwhelmingly good mother. As part of the gay and lesbian community, she had to make a concerted effort to have Madison. It takes a lot of planning and desire and love on her part to make that happen. Melissas love and commitment for Madison is so beautiful. She and Gerrits were in school and choir together, and now, Chartre said, they have something else in common. My son Lincoln is one month younger than Madison, so it was a blessing for us being able to go through the pregnancy and childbirth together. One of the difficult things through this whole experience, Chartre said, is watching my son achieve certain traditional milestones and seeing how much harder Madison has to work to achieve those. However, since receiving a new medication, Madison is like a completely different baby, Gerrits said. In the month since shes been on it, its like a light switch went on in her mental development. Suddenly, shes playing with cause-and-effect toys and she bounces around all the time. Chartre wants to make sure Madison continues to have every

advantage on her long medical journey. She explained that the support received from Community Benefit Tree is absolutely pivotal to Madisons success. When you have a source like CBT to give you the template for an effective and efficient event, the majority of the funds come back to the family. You couldnt do that without them, she said. Not only do they have the know-how to plan events with efficiency and effectiveness, but they have people to drive those resources. They have folks helping us maintain a donation log and volunteers who will be at our event, helping us do what we need to do to raise the money. They have the technology that enables us all to share information and documents in a way that we could never do without their help. When we started the planning process, Chartre said, we were trying to understand what it would take for us to file and become a 501(c)(3) and set up central locations for donations. It became apparent that working with CBT was the solution. Without the backing of a larger name, people tend not to have as much trust in where their money might be going, Chartre said. I was the marketing manager for a large company in the Fox Valley. We received so many benefit requests that we finally decided to send thousands of dollars of gift cards to CBT. When we received a call asking us to donate to a benefit, we would say, If you register with CBT, they will give you a stack of our gift cards. A lot of community businesses do that. Its a safe way for them to ensure that their donations are being used properly. Otherwise, those monies can be eaten up through the administration costs of running the benefit. Readers who are unable to attend Madisons celebration event can donate by going to the CBT website at communitybenefittree. org. Go to Current Celebration of Support Events and scroll to find Miracles for Madison Celebration. Community Benefit Tree, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, celebrates peoples lives and supports them during medical crises. They help families, friends and co-workers plan Celebration of Support events for their loved ones and provide education, support, resources and financial assistance for families struggling with medical crises. CBT has assisted with more than 500 Celebration of Support events in the last 10 years. For more information, visit communitybenefittree.org or contact CBT staff at 920-422-1919.

Quieting the inner critic

By Stephanie Tsoris

ake a moment to think about your daily internal dialogue. What are a few of the most common things you say to yourself? Are they mostly positive or mostly negative? If the way we think has the ability to shape our reality and our happiness, why not let go of our inner critic? Many of us havent learned effective ways of looking at ourselves, and a constant inner critic in our heads is often the result. Too much negative internal dialogue leads to automatic thoughts and reactions. Over time, negative thinking patterns get wired into our brain, lessening our ability to think positively. Therefore, restructuring these thought patterns takes conscious and mindful effort, which can be tough work. With the emerging evidence of neuroplasticity, we now know that we can rewire our brains even into old age. One step in examining our inner world is to look at who the self is that we need to love and esteem. An effective therapeutic method that involves cognitive restructuring is the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, created by Richard Schwarz. IFS

deals with the concept of the self as being subdivided into parts. Other ways to describe parts are subpersonalities or aspects of our personality. The inner voice that calls you lazy if you are not doing all the things on your to-do list every day can certainly make ones life miserable. Examining why a part exists in the self in a nonjudging, curious and open-minded way, we can gain the ability to discover where a strong reaction or trigger to a particular person or event is coming from. Its common for many of us to have protective parts. They come forward for all kinds of reasons, such as fear of being judged, failure, not being good enough or being unlovable. If a person has been humiliated, made to feel worthless, has had traumas and/ or losses in the past, a part can get stuck in the past. That part usually has been stifled rather than examined and/or understood. An example is if you felt humiliated as a child for living in a messy

home, its possible youll be sensitive when someone calls your housekeeping skills into question. The humiliated child part can come forward in your reaction to the criticism. By the same token, when you are 3 or 4 years old, you dont have the ability to understand that your mom or dad is having a bad day. The message that can start and get integrated very early is Im bad. Acceptance, nonattachment, nonjudgment and letting go of expectations are integral to both IFS and mindfulness. Both invite us to first be present and then to explore the self objectively with a compassionate heart. In a meditation technique called thought diffusion, thoughts are observed objectively and as separate from the self. It teaches us to listen to our thoughts without getting caught up in them. The thought becomes more of a reflection, and we find equilibrium in that emptiness of ego or, in IFS, the emptiness of our parts. Our inner lives are extremely complex. If we let go of thinking we can fix these parts, preferably exploring and examining them instead, the process of quieting our inner critic can begin.

She is developing experience in mindfulness and compassion-focused therapy, internal family systems, and brainspotting (a trauma therapy technique evolving out of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). Her experience teaching yoga and meditation has greatly influenced her approach to therapy and interest in emotional regulation development. Detoxication
Spring cleaning for the body!
By Kim Neher, M.S., Clinical Nutritionist

ere constantly exposed to toxins: in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the things we touch. Our bodies do a good job trying to keep up to all these toxins through detoxification processes that go on in our colon, liver, kidneys, lymph, lungs and skin, but if were exposed to more toxins than we can detoxify, they can build up and store in our tissues. This can lead to fatigue, brain fog, muscle weakness and pain, headaches, chemical sensitivity, memory loss, various skin conditions, and even depletion of your immune system.

Theres plenty we can do to minimize our exposure to toxins. Purify your work and home environment: Use nontoxic cleaners, avoid vehicle emissions, and avoid stainresistant/flame-retardant materials, dyes, paints, solvents and glues. Avoiding eating processed foods with food dyes, artificial flavors and artificial sweeteners. Eat organic or from local farmers when possible to minimize consumption of growth

hormones, pesticides, herbicides, and meat and dairy from animals that have been fed antibiotics. Drink purified water to minimize heavy metals, chlorine, hormones and pharmaceutical drugs found in the water. Use natural cosmetics, shampoos, soaps and perfumes free of chemicals and heavy metals. However, even with our best efforts, it is impossible to avoid toxins completely. Therefore, dont wait for the accumulation of toxins to start affecting your health. Take control now with a nutritionistsupported individualized detoxification program. This is not a water or juice fast, or an aggressive laxative detox-type program, which often take a one-size-fitsall approach and are less complete. This is a heavily nutrient- and protein-supported program designed to fuel the bodys natural detoxification mechanisms. Although this is not promoted as a weight loss program, weight loss is inevitable as you go through the detox. The program is designed to have you lose toxic water weight and body fat, yet maintain your muscle mass. The goal is never to detox, just to return to retox. Therefore, a big part of detoxification is to be educated on a healthy diet and to return to post-detox life able to maintain your newly achieved health status. Take control of your health. Hearing on the phone!

By Dr. Stephanie Long, Audiologist

ven with a minimal degree of hearing changes, hearing on the phone can be a challenge. This can be true for a variety of reasons. It is always harder to hear when you cannot see someone. As my mother always says, (even though she wears hearing aids) I have to put on my glasses so I can hear you. Even without hearing loss, absolutely everyone hears better if they can see the person who is speaking. Whether you are aware of it or not, almost everyone can read lips to some extent. This is why it is so bothersome to watch a video when the sound and lips do not match. The human brain is programed to combine what is heard with what is seen in order to make sense of what is being said. In addition, if the person to whom we are talking is familiar and they are talking about something we know a lot about, it is also much easier to hear. As you can see, not having these benefits leads to a significant disadvantage on the telephone. On the phone, we do not have the advantage of seeing the person we are talking to. In addition, the topic of conversation may not be immediately known or familiar. Luckily, there are several options to enhance listening on the phone, such as amplified phones or captioned phones. Simply put, amplified phones are much louder than a regular phone.

These devices can be a wireless or wired phone and come with and without answering machines. Captioned phones have the option to have a transcript of the conversation displayed on a small monitor near the phone. If you are having a particularly challenging conversation, by the push of a one button you can read what is being said. My patients have found this particularly helpful when talking with unfamiliar people, such as when calling the doctors office, calling customer service numbers or ordering takeout food. Assistance is also available for cell phone communication. Funding to purchase this assistive technology is often available through the Telecommunications Equipment Purchase Program (TEPP). More information can be found at https://psc.wi.gov/ consumerInfo/assistancePrograms/tepp/tepp-ind.htm (or just search for TEPP Wisconsin in your web browser). The website explains TEPP in the following way: The Telecommunications Equipment Purchase program is to help people with disabilities buy specialized equipment that they need in order to use basic telephone services. The TEPP is one of several different programs paid for by the Wisconsin Universal Service Fund (USF) established by the Public Service Commission. Money collected from Wisconsin telephone services providers goes into the USF.

The TEPP program is not income dependent, so I encourage you to apply for it yourself online or contact your audiologist to apply for you. Once you have applied and been found to qualify, a voucher will be mailed to you or your audiologist. At that time, you can use the voucher to select a phone to meet your needs. Some devices (such as some Bluetooth-enabled devices) require prior authorization. TEPP offers a variety of vouchers that can be used with different vendors to purchase equipment to hear well on the phone. There are different categories, which include: hard of hearing, deaf/ severely hard of hearing, speech impaired, mobility impaired, low vision and hard of hearing, and blind and severely hard of hearing. Depending on the challenges an individual faces, different amounts of funding are available toward the purchase of the correct technology to meet your needs. If a person simply needs an amplified phone, the voucher is $100, which is enough to cover many amplified phone options. Finally, there are ways to work with TEPP to purchase phone-amplification options that can work with hearing aids, as many people with hearing aids need additional assistance for the phone.

Healthy in spirit
How to coexist with your polar opposite
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

s there someone in your life who seems to be your polar opposite? If so, then you know how frustrating it can be! It may seem that the two of you never agree on anything, so you learn to expect disagreement. What can be done? Sometimes its a matter of simply being unable to coexist, and if the relationship is not important to you, then perhaps you will choose to disengage. Most often, however, the relationship is very important to you and it is worth taking some steps toward a more amiable coexistence unless you thrive on endless conflict. But lets assume you dont. The truth is, we come into relationships with needs, desires and preferences we have carried for a while. In the workplace, one office mate might prefer neatness and order, while the other believes out of sight, out of mind, so everything must be visible at all times and whats a little dust or a few candy wrappers? Viewing others with understanding and compassion is a great way to find personal freedom and reduce conflict in our lives. For example, it may help to realize that within all of us is the desire to be comfortable in our surroundings; we just find that comfort in

different ways. But if two people desire different types of comfort, then how can they live together in a way that honors both of them? The most important thing to remember is that you cannot change another person. You may be able to work with each other to find some better accommodation of your differences, but those differences will always exist. Can you connect with your own higher self, the part of you that can step back and recall what drew the two of you together in the first place? The higher self usually has the capacity to look past the little things like dirty socks on the bedroom floor. We each have a higher self, and when we can

connect at this level, we have an opportunity for increased understanding and compassion. The second thing to remember is that these things will need to be renegotiated fairly often. Why? Because you are polar opposites! But polarity is not all bad. Polarity is a naturally occurring phenomenon that shows up everywhere in life. In your minds eye, imagine a straight line drawn between two points: A and B. Allow each point to represent a value for neatness, for example. Then, visualize how far you might be willing to go toward the middle. Notice this doesnt mean things are going to be exactly as either of you wish only that you are going to try to move closer to the middle. This is called compromise, and it would be great for us as individuals, communities and nations if we could recall what compromise looks like and seek it out more often! The third thing to remember is your sense of humor; can you chuckle to yourself when he or she does it again? It is never helpful to use sarcasm, which is a cutting and hurtful attempt at humor directed at the other person, but a private little chuckle to yourself may be just the ticket to creating some ease and even joy while coexisting with your polar opposite. Blessings on the journey!

Growing peppers
By Lu Visocky

here are many different types of peppers that most people dont realize they can grow in their garden. These different types of peppers are becoming more available to home gardeners. The first are sweet bell peppers, which dont come in just red and green anymore, nor are they just different colors of bell peppers. Yellow, orange, chocolate-colored and purple peppers are fairly commonplace, not to mention various sizes and varieties within the red-pepper world beyond sweet bells. Most people dont realize that bell peppers come in sizes other than the traditional bell size. Some are long and thin like bulls horn peppers, which are sweet, but because of their nontraditional shape, most people confuse them with hot peppers. Next are specialty sweet peppers, including pimentos, frying peppers, and other sizes, shapes, and flavors. These are mostly small-fruited varieties, which can be among the easiest peppers to grow. Roasting pimentos are best for as you may have guessed roasting. They tend to have a high sugar level and roasting brings out their deep sweetness and makes it silky smooth. Frying peppers, such as Jimmy Nardello, are excellent for making stir fry and Spanish dishes. Shishito is a Japanese variety that is used as an appetizer by roasting on the grill and sprinkling with sea salt.

Southwestern chile peppers have complex flavors with varying degrees of heat. One example of a chile pepper is the Anaheim, which packs some heat but a terrific southwestern flavor for flavoring salsas if you like them on the mild side. Some chiles are used for making mole sauce, such as pasilla bajio. Specialty hot peppers range from moderately spicy jalapenos, to hotter serrano peppers, to the hottest of all: habaneros. Some of these can be container grown, as they are perennials in warmer climates. Ornamental peppers may feature spicy, brightly colored fruits, purple or variegated foliage, or both. Some of these are grown for the beauty of the plant, but some are actually edible and some are quite spicy.

Growing

You can try starting your own seeds indoors under bright fluorescent lights in early spring, eight to 10 weeks before your last spring frost date. If possible, provide bottom heat to keep the plants containers near 80 degrees. Make sure the seeds stay slightly moist. Seeds should sprout within two weeks. Transfer seedlings to larger containers when they are about six weeks old. Dont set peppers outside until at least two weeks after your average last frost date, during a period of warm weather. Always harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to weather a few hours each day for at least a week before transplanting them outdoors. Choose a sunny site for planting that has fertile, well-drained soil. Loosen the planting bed to 12 inches deep, and thoroughly mix in a 1-inch layer of mature compost. Dig planting holes 12 inches deep and at least 18 inches apart, and enrich each with a spadeful of additional compost. Partially refill the holes and situate plants so they are planted slightly deeper than they were in their containers.

as overfertilized peppers produce lots of foliage but few fruits. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer only if youre growing peppers in poor soil. In cool climates, use black plastic mulch in addition to row covers to create warm conditions for peppers. Provide stakes or other supports to keep plants upright as they become heavy with fruits. Cover surrounding soil with a mulch of clean straw or grass clippings so ripening peppers dont come in contact with soil, which can cause them to rot.

brain

heres a reason people say, Its like riding a bike! and it has nothing to do with pleasant childhood memories of long summer days and endless rides in the sun. Being taught to ride a bike is scary. The new motion, open road and territory to explore can be intimidating. But when your brain goes through the instruction process, an invaluable connection is made you learn. Ed and Jody Jedlicka, owners of LearningRx in Appleton, want to help others discover their ability to gain knowledge with an innovative, comprehensive technique. Brain training is a simple but an extremely powerful way to enhance a students core ability to learn faster, easier and better, Ed Jedlicka says. Much like how a group of classmates, colleagues, or a group of family members work together to get a job done, your brain relies on several different components to accomplish a task. When it is new or unrecognizable, or if the level of difficulty is higher than normal, the brain must use more resources for the learning process to come together. In everyday life, if someone is struggling, they ask for help. When the brain is struggling, nearby neurons are brought in to save the day. Once the task is mastered, these neurons are released to go back to what they might have done before. So, basically, they gained efficiency and processing speed required for that particular task and are retained and make related tasks much easier, Jedlicka says. When you learn to ride a bike, youve acquired a skill that youll hold for the rest of your life. With their brain training program, LearningRx wants retaining any information to be a forever skill and an asset, too not a frustration.

Exercise for your brain

To create this lifelong strength, brain training concentrates on the foundation. Cognition is, simply put, the power to think, reason and remember. We begin this development at a very young age with matching games, puzzles and colorful building blocks. The games are all entertaining, but also have something else in common the ability to train your brain. Childhood favorites like those mentioned earlier are a good way to start, and the activities presented at LearningRx are just as fun, but they take it a step further. There are hundreds of different activities that can be done, Jedlicka explains. For example, imagine that there are eight or 10 rows of arrows and theyre colored in four or five different colors red, blue, green, yellow. Theyre pointed in different directions up, down, left, right. You go through, line by line, saying blue, green, red (indicating what you see). As you get better at that, you increase speed and it creates neuronal activity in the brain.

We call it the summer slide... Kids can lose a lot of information. This doesnt just allow them not to lose it, but to gain ability and confidence. Ed Jedlicka
Eventually, rather than signifying the color of the arrow, youll be asked to specify which direction it is pointing. Speed is a factor, and the faster you go, the more your brain is being exercised. A healthy brain helps you to learn more efficiently. Illinois. At the time, their Appleton location was the only one in the Midwest. The student was getting Cs, Ds and Fs on his report cards. After going through the program, LearningRx received a call from the students mother. She was crying, but nothing was wrong. They were proud, fulfilled, happy tears. Her son got all As and Bs and she couldnt have been more ecstatic. Success stories are the norm at LearningRx, but it doesnt just have to do with classrooms, offices spaces or even learning material at all. One wife of a client came back to tell us that the program saved their marriage after her husband returned to work, Jedlicka adds.

Accomplishment at any age

LearningRx has specific programs for math, reading and comprehension in addition to brain training, but going through the core program will give participants a foundation to help in any other skill because memory is such an integral part of our lives at any age. We have clients from about age 5 to our oldest client, who is 78, Jedlicka says. The majority is students who are struggling in school but we get athletes and top students, too. And even people with traumatic brain injuries. We have neurologists who refer a lot of patients to us to get them back to where they were. The scope and span of brain training is obvious. Its also limitless and certainly doesnt end when the last school bell of the year rings. Summer is the busiest time at the brain training center. LearningRx provides a great opportunity to sharpen skills and continue to grow in any processes they choose. We call it the summer slide, Jedlicka says. Kids can lose a lot of information. This doesnt just allow them not to lose it, but to gain ability and confidence. And its not just students who feel triumph. It has a ripple effect and changes the lives of those around them, too. You can imagine coming home every night as a parent and knowing its going to be a terrible night because your child hates doing homework because theyre frustrated, Jedlicka says. Then they complete the program and most often thats eliminated. That child has gained a great deal of confidence because they have the ability to do the things they were never able to do prior to that. In one example, Jedlicka relays a story about a participant from

A foundation with purpose

Prior to opening LearningRx, Jody was an audiologist. She specialized in diagnosing processing disorders, and although the patient would receive accommodations and help in school, at the core, she didnt see any big changes. After working with those same patients in the brain training program, their tests would no longer indicate an auditory processing disorder. This is exactly what Jody was looking for, Jedlicka says. It made a huge difference. That was nine years ago. LearningRx now has 17 trainers, including Ed and Jody, who go through a rigorous process of testing and interviews and are required to have a college degree. The volume of aptitude and passion trainers possess fills the air at the center. The environment only adds to the potential for success. Its always expanding and growing. With such a great drive and motivation behind them, the Jedlickas focus on whats important at the end of the day. to see the confidence built in the program is the most rewarding thing, Jedlicka says. Its actually changing somebodys life.

Learning from the best

Ed and Jody Jedlicka are true experts in their field. Ed has a Masters of Science degree in School Counseling from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology, specializing in cognition. Jody has a Masters of Science degree and her Doctor of Audiology degree. Both have practiced in a variety of settings and bring their knowledge and belief in brain training to LearningRx each day. Am I shy or socially anxious?

By Lisa Klarner

s we continue to hear more about social anxiety disorder (SAD) in this ongoing series, it may make a person wonder if they too have social anxiety or if its just shyness. While it may be hard for some people to accept, shyness isnt necessarily a bad thing, even though its often portrayed that way in our society. Our world needs balance; we wouldnt want

to have a world full of outgoing people without the shy, more reflective people mixed in. In order to see the comparison between shyness and SAD, this article will include a few fictional examples.

Mary had been shy for as long as she could remember. When she reached her teens, she often compared herself to the outgoing kids in school. She was frustrated with her social challenges. She wanted to be more outgoing. It was around this time that Mary felt increasingly self-conscious and she felt an internalized sense of anger about her shyness. She began to avoid social situations more frequently. Mary kept her concerns to herself and managed to come up with a variety of excuses that helped her to maintain the social avoidance

When Joe started kindergarten, his mom was concerned because he was extremely shy. His mom informed the teacher of her concern early on and the two of them worked together to find ways to help Joe gain confidence. The teacher looked for small group opportunities where she could ask Joe to share his thoughts. His mom created a confidence chart at home that gave Joe some goals like, Order my food at McDonalds. Joe received encouragement at home and at school and he made great strides. He became more confident in his social skills and found his true, outgoing nature.

Shyness as a personality trait

Jill had always been quiet like her father. By the time she was in middle school, she had two close friends and did fairly well in school. Teachers would often comment about her lack of participation in class, but because she did so well on her homework it balanced out. Jill didnt seem discouraged about her shyness; as a matter of fact, she enjoyed reading and spending time alone in her room. She was comfortable going to social gatherings, although she was still soft-spoken and preferred listening over speaking. Jill understood she was shy and she accepted this about herself. Her parents and teachers didnt try to change her, but focused on her positive qualities instead.

Our world needs balance; we wouldnt want to have a world full of outgoing people without the shy, more reective people mixed in.
In Joes scenario, with the support of his mom and teacher, he was able to ease into social interactions and gradually become more confident. The key here was gradual change. We need to take small steps forward in order to build self-confidence. In Jills scenario, she was naturally destined to be shy. She wasnt forced to be outgoing. She was taught to accept her true nature. If she had been pressured to be more outgoing, her story may have ended up like our first one with Mary. As individuals, we all have a choice to make. We can accept and love ourselves as we are even if we are shy. If, after careful reflection, we determine we want to address our shyness and become more outgoing, we can set realistic goals to increase our confidence and to gradually expand our social interactions. The path of change for the shy person isnt as long, compared to the person with SAD. If you or someone you know has SAD, it is important to seek therapy and follow proven programs to address the disorder. Its not as simple as increasing your self-esteem; there is more work involved. The good news is a person with SAD can move beyond it! There is hope for a less anxious life! This article is part of a continuing series. Read more about SAD in the July issue of Natures Pathways.

Accepting or changing

In the story about Mary, her shyness turned into SAD. She hadnt shared her social fears with her parents or teachers. She wasnt able to get the help she needed because she didnt communicate. Mary hadnt accepted her shyness and she didnt know how to change. This caused her shyness to evolve into SAD.

How to make pizza healthier

izza may have had humble beginnings, but today it is one of the most popular foods worldwide. More than five billion pizzas are sold across the globe each year, and pizza accounts for 10 percent of all food-service sales. Although pizza has many positive attributes, few consider pizza a healthy meal. Laden with cheese and high-calorie meats, pizza is often referred to as a guilty pleasure. However, there are a variety of ways to make the pizza you love better for your body.

Downplay the cheese. Pizza originated in Naples, Italy, and it has been said the first pizzas were comprised of just dough and sauce and no cheese. Restaurants that favor more authentic pizzas of the past will not rely heavily on cheese

when preparing their pizzas. Instead of ordering a pizza with extra cheese, opt for minimal cheese to add just a subtle component of flavor to the pizza. Such an alteration to the recipe can reduce the saturated fat and cholesterol in pizza by a considerable amount. Savor the tomatoes. Tomatoes provide a bevy of health benefits. The carotenoids, specifically lycopene, found in tomatoes have a number of beneficial properties, including preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. According to a report from researchers at Athens Medical School that was published in Nutrition Research, a daily 70-gram portion of tomato paste containing roughly 33 milligrams of lycopene was associated with an improvement in flow-mediated dilation, a measure of a blood vessels ability to relax. Tomatoes can help lower blood pressure, and they provide other heart benefits as well. Enjoying extra sauce on pizza and supplementing with sliced, cooked tomatoes can help make pizza healthier. Choose whole-wheat crust. More restaurants are adding whole-grain pizzas to their menus. By switching to a whole-wheat crust, you can boost your fiber intake by as

much as 50 percent. High-fiber foods help to regulate cholesterol levels in the blood and help you to feel fuller longer, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Fiber also helps the digestive tract by making a person more regular. Whole-grain foods have a lower glycemic index than processed grains as well, meaning they wont cause rapid blood-sugar spikes, which can be advantageous to those with diabetes. Top pizza with vegetables. Instead of salt- and fat-heavy meats like pepperoni, ham or sausage, top your pizza with fresh vegetables. Peppers, tomatoes, olives, broccoli, and spinach each deliver a wealth of vitamins and minerals, and are a great way to add more fiber to your diet. Opt for thin-crust. Different areas of the country and the world favor different types of pizza. In the United States, New Yorkers prefer thin-crust pizza while the Windy City is synonymous with deep-dish

pizza. While the debate continues as to which type of crust is better, switching to a thinner crust may have certain health benefits. Thick crusts pack more calories into each and every slice. When paired with cheese and other toppings, a slice of deep-dish pizza, while delicious, may contain more calories than is wise to eat in one sitting. Brick-oven pizza parlors generally offer whisper-thin crusts sparingly touched with cheese, sauce and basil to produce the classic Margherita pie, making such pizza a healthier alternative than New York- or Chicago-style pizza. Pair pizza with salad. One way to make pizza healthier is to avoid overindulging. It is easy to overdo it with pizza, but try to cut your portion size in half, replacing that extra slice of pizza with a salad or side order of steamed vegetables to fill up without overindulging. Pizza is a popular food across the globe. And while pizza may not be the healthiest food, a few simple ingredient changes can make pizza a much more nutritional meal.

5 properties you should look for in your drinking water

By Dr. Jack Janssen

ave you ever noticed how in TV and magazines ads, when we are approaching springtime or watching the summer fade to autumn, they warn that seasonal allergy time is fast upon us or the cold and flu season is coming! and similar drivel? If that is the case, when is the season of good health and strong immune systems? There are many factors which contribute to the presence or absence of health. How is it that two people can work in a cramped cubicle, cranking out reports on computers, answering phone calls and emails, side by side, day in and day out breathing the same air under the same fluorescent lights, sitting in the same types of chairs, etc., and one constantly has a cough or runny nose or is calling in sick, and the other never misses a day and is the picture of health? Even though they spend eight to 10 hours a day together exposed to the same environment, why is one always sick and one always healthy? It is not only the externals that have an impact on our health; more often, it has to do with the internal environment, which has become known as the biological terrain, that really determines how we respond to our external environments. We do not get headaches because we depleted our internal store of aspirin. We do not get a runny nose because we are deficient

of diphenhydramine, loratadine or another similar generic or name brand over-thecounter allergy symptom relief product. What we need to really help improve our bodys biological terrain are five things: good food, good air, good nerve supply, good rest and good water. For this article, I will focus on the water. In my opinion, a clean, filtered, microclustered and alkalized water with a strongly negative ORP value is the best way to shore up and make some change in that biological terrain. Ill address each of these separately.

High heels
A pain in the neck (and back)
By Dr. Marco Araujo

early every woman is going to wear high heels at some point in her life. For some, they are a daily part of business attire, while others only put them on for black tie events. Regardless of their frequency of wear, however, most women will agree that heels can be downright uncomfortable. Medical professionals take that observation a step further heels can be downright dangerous. While fashionistas may claim the calf-slimming, height-adding properties of heels are worth the trouble, most physicians disagree. Wearing heels regularly can lead to physical health problems and troublesome long-term pain from the back and neck to the foot. Most of the problems stem from posture. The center of gravity of a woman in heels is pushed abnormally forward, putting the hips and spine out of alignment. This misalignment increases pressure on knee joints by more than 25 percent and causes many a trip and fall. High heels can also cause calf muscles and Achilles tendons to shorten and tighten, resulting in pain in the heel and lower leg. The added weight placed onto the balls of the feet may also lead to immediate and longstanding pain. Although few women can forego heels entirely, there are ways to minimize their discomfort and injury-causing potential for ones who do wear them. Here are five tips for those high heel-wearing women: Go smaller: The size of the heel can affect how much pain is felt. Unfortunately, womens shoe styles have trended toward taller heels in recent years, and typically the taller the heel, the more painful they are. Go for a smaller heel if you can. On the plus side, small, well-constructed heels can actually be better for feet than flats. Flex and rotate: The long-term tightening and shortening of calf muscles and Achilles tendons can be prevented by flexing and rotating the ankles for pain relief when seated. Thicker is better: Stilettos can cause the foot and ankle to wobble around, adding stress on the ankle and foot, not to

mention a greater chance of falling. Thicker heels can help with balance and lessen pain. Look for soles and inserts: Heels with larger soles or platforms can provide a little more cushion for the foot. Over-thecounter inserts also provide added support for the heels and ball of the foot. Take a load off: Sit down whenever the opportunity arises. Standing and walking with the unnatural posture that heels cause will likely do damage to the feet and back that can cause pain. But sitting in them doesnt harm anything. If youre going to wear high heels, try to follow these tips as closely as you can to avoid pain in your feet, legs and back. Should you experience persistent back or muscle pain, a consultation with a family physician or a pain management specialist is recommended.

5 PROPERTIES IN DRINKING WATER continued from page 57

For the most part, we have access to (relatively) clean water from our faucets in our homes whether we are on a private well or on a municipal water system. There are unique situations where private wells have been tainted due to runoff from misapplied farm manure products or chemicals, but generally speaking, most of us have clean drinking water available. Filtering is important, because even though most of us have relatively clean water available, various factors can cause particulates in our water: deteriorating or damaged pipes, shallow wells, etc. The function of the filter is to catch at least the larger, visible particulates and usually mild to moderate odors. Some filters also can remove heavy metals, chlorine or other chemicals. Microclustered is how water is found in mountain streams and brooks, where the water undergoes much agitation as it flows over rocks, pebbles and boulders along the way. The molecules are grouped together in small clusters of four, five, six or 10 molecules. Water that has not had a rollercoaster ride from its source to its endpoint will tend to be clustered in groups of 20 to 30 or more! It is almost like the difference between a golf ball and a basketball. The microclustered water is easier for the body to absorb: right down to the cellular level. Microclustering helps the cells to eliminate physiologic waste products and toxins much more readily. It also causes the water to feel wetter and taste smoother. Alkalizinzed water has a higher pH level than water which comes from the tap. The more alkaline we can cause our biologic

terrain to become (within reason), the less friendly is that terrain for unwanted bacteria, viruses, fungus, etc. ORP stands for oxidation-reduction potential. Oxidation is degeneration. An example of oxidation is the rusting of an apple left to sit out after it has been cut. Many bottled waters, sports drinks and sodas have strongly positive ORP values. That means they cause free radicals to form in your body, ultimately causing various forms of degeneration and cellular degradation. Water that is generated through some alkalizing machines can have a strongly negative ORP value. What this means is that water can actually become an antioxidant, much like vitamin C or vitamin E! In your quest to optimize health and wellness for you and yours, look for an alkalizing machine that will do these five simple but so very important actions on the water you and your pets drink!

Compost: natures way to grow

By Sarah Everson

pring has finally sprung; some winters make spring that much more rewarding! What better way to get out and enjoy the weather than by starting a composting pile. Attempting to compost might be a very scary concept. But fear not! Compost can be as easy or as complex as you make it. Simply controlling a few factors, such as

feedstocks and moisture, can speed up the normally slow process. Remember: composting is not a new idea. It has been happening for years in the forest. What is a feedstock? It is a generic term used to describe the things you apply to a compost pile. Feedstocks are food waste, yard waste, manure, hay, etc. Feedstocks are broken into two groups: carbons

If you want something to grow, why dont you call Compost Joes

and nitrogen (also known as browns and greens). Examples of browns are leaves, straw, paper and sawdust. Greens are grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and manure. It is important to understand that a compost pile with all nitrogen or too much nitrogen will have odor issues along with issues with the composting process. For every 30 pounds of carbon used, 1 pound of nitrogen is needed. Nitrogen breaks down fast and carbon breaks down slow; the mix of the two together is the perfect blend.

Decide how fast you want your compost. This will help you figure out your piles pattern. Do you need compost in four months, or can you wait a year before you use your compost? A fast pile only works when you can fill a 3-foot by 3-foot by 3-foot cube all at once. Once that pile is built, no more material can be added to it, otherwise it starts the process over. Once it is built, turn it once a week for a month, let it sit for a month, then turn it once more letting it sit at least four weeks before using it. A second pile might be handy for the additional waste collected while the first pile is composting. The alternate way to compost is very

relaxing. Just add feedstocks to a backyard bin or pile as you create them: after the grass has been cut or once the kitchen food collector is full. It is handy to keep a bale of hay near the compost pile if browns are hard to find in the summer months. Dont forget to add some water when you are adding to your pile. A compost pile ideally should be 40-60 percent water. Not enough water slows the process down and too much water takes away necessary air space. simple! Start with using leaves, straw, yard waste and vegetable scraps only. Once you get the hang of the process, introduce other feedstock into the pile. There is no wrong way to create a compost pile. Everyone has their own recipe of success when it comes to composting; do not panic if your neighbor composts with different feedstock than you. Another decision when first composting is whether to use a manufactured bin or homemade bin, or to simply have a pile in the backyard. Each way of composting has its benefits; find what works best in your environment.

Step 3

Sit back and let the compost happen! It may take months or even years to create compost, but in the end it will be worth all the pains of the labor. Remember, composting not only produces a wonderful product you can use, but it is also a great way to manage your waste, along with ample fun the entire family can be involved with!

Jane takes the step toward being smoke-free with essential oils

uitting smoking is one of the most important steps in bettering your health. I had been wrestling with the desire for quite some time, but past failures, including seeing my doctor, trying electronic cigarettes and going cold turkey kept me from trying again. I knew, for me, there had to be a more natural approach. Then I met Ann McCotter, an independent product consultant with doTERRA essential oils. Anns approach to quitting smoking was comforting, realistic and made much more sense to me than the methods I had tried previously. Our first meeting consisted of a getting to know you session where Ann dug deep to find out things about me, my family, my habits and the future I envisioned for myself. She used what she calls Anns Model for Positive Change. It addresses awareness, accountability, action and appreciative approach. Ann supplied me with several bottles of essential oils along with lots of information and education. She showed me how to not only use the oils to stop smoking, but also to start repairing the damage smoking had done to my body. We agreed upon a plan for her to continue to support me through the journey which included future contact, check-ins and setting some milestones along the way. Ann provided an oil for each step, knowledge of smoking catalysts and even oils to help during the repairing process. Theres an oil for everything! Black pepper essential oil was to be used as a way to reduce cravings. Check. Inhaling the scent dramatically reduced the urge

to smoke a cigarette for me. This bottle stays with me at all times! Lavender oil assists in several ways, one of which is to help calm anxiety, stress and tension, which used to lead to me wanting to have a cigarette. I used lavender mostly at night and applied it to the bottom of my pillow to help me get a good nights sleep. I have also been using this in the diffuser Ann provided to keep myself calm on a daily basis. We immediately agreed that a big step for me would be to never smoke in the car. A wild orange oil was useful in masking the smoke smell in my vehicle. Since the scent was attached to the thought of not smoking for me, I also applied it topically to the back of my neck throughout the day. Wild orange has a naturally uplifting effect, which helped combat some of the mood swings I experienced in previous attempts to quit smoking. By far, one of the best oils that I began using with Anns guidance was lemon. Ann instructed me to add drops of the oil to water which provided great flavor, but also gave me the feeling of detoxing (in a good way!). The lemon flavor helped to satisfy my urge to drink soda, which was a big catalyst for wanting a cigarette. Because the lemon was detoxifying, I began experimenting with it in other ways; inhaling it and applying small drops to the bottom of my feet and near my temples have definitely made everything feel clearer and cleaner. It has lessened my desire to put anything bad in my body! Eucalyptus has provided a great way to clear my lungs and open up my sinuses. It

has also begun stimulating the regeneration of lung tissue. Eucalyptus happens to be one of my favorite scents, so this was an easy one to inhale. It is also a great scent in the house, which my family enjoys! Every person is different in their quest to quit smoking; however, I would recommend adding essential oils to whatever method one is practicing. The act of picking up the bottle and using the oils is a great way to keep your hands busy and do something healthy that can provide instant gratification. I am so thankful that Ann introduced me to essential oils! I cannot wait to write about my experiences as a complete nonsmoker in the future! Ann McCotter is a founding member of One doTERRA Community and a doTERRA Wellness Advocate (elite level). She earned a masters in positive organization development from Case Western Reserve in 2007. With almost 20 years of corporate experience focused on helping others develop within a positive change model, she is excited to be making a difference in the lives of others by sharing the One doTERRA Community opportunity. Exploring the amazing health benets of reading

t can be hard for some people to pick up a book when there are so many distractions at the ready. But while books might not be as flashy as the latest must-have gadget, they can provide benefits that might surprise even the most avid readers. In addition to the intellectual benefits of reading, indulging in a good book can also boost physical health. According to Ken Pugh, PhD, president and director of research at Haskins Laboratories, which is devoted to the science of language, when a person is reading, parts of the brain that have evolved for other functions connect in a specific neural circuit for reading, which is very challenging. Just like muscles in the body, the brain benefits when it is pushed beyond its normal abilities, and reading is a great way to push those limits. But the benefits of reading do not stop there. Reading can help reduce stress, benefitting the body in numerous ways. A 2009 University of Sussex study found that turning to a good book can be an effective relaxation strategy when things become too stressful. Reading fiction can stimulate the imagination and distract a person from the stressors in everyday life. Choosing a humorous or uplifting story can boost mood and help people relax, particularly when reading before bedtime. Reading also can help men and women get a better nights rest. People who are accustomed to reading books before going to bed actually train their mind and body for relaxation. Picking up a book can send signals that it is time to settle down and get ready for sleep. Health experts often recommend developing a sleep routine to people who struggle to fall asleep at night, and reading for 30 minutes before bed each night can be an integral part of such routines. Research has shown that reading and engaging the brain in other ways, such as through intellectual games and puzzles, can stave off dementia. These activities stimulate the cells in the brain to grow

and connect, increasing the power of brain tissue. According to the Alzheimers Association, keeping the mind active through reading can strengthen connections between brain cells and build up brain cell reserves. Mental activity might even generate new brain cells. All of these factors can reduce the risk of Alzheimers disease and dementia. According to a paper from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, reading can stimulate the brain to produce more white matter. White matter works together with gray matter and is responsible for sending sensory and motor stimuli to the central nervous system to stimulate a response. Healthy white matter keeps the central nervous system working effectively and may reduce risk of learning disabilities as well as impaired motor functions. The educational benefits of reading are widely known. But reading also provides a host of other benefits.

Massage and tness

By Carol Baumhardt

oothing music and soft lighting have long been associated with massage therapy. And no one denies that massage helps one relax after a long week of work. It can even provide relief to a headache. But how many people think of receiving a massage in a loud gym setting? How many would even want their body touched after a sweaty workout?

Massage and tness go hand in hand

This is the entrance into the world of massage and fitness. The fields of massage and fitness have gone hand in hand since the beginning of the Olympics. According to P.J. Benjamin, author of Tappans Handbook of Healing Massage Techniques, during the Olympics in ancient Greece,

amateur athletes were granted the benefit of a bodyworker to aid in the recovery from an event or to assist in their performance of an upcoming one. Today, licensed massage therapists (LMTs) can be found in the sports arena alongside professional and amateur athletes. The Olympic teams travel with LMTs, professional sports teams staff LMTs to work alongside personal trainers and sports medicine doctors, and LMTs volunteer their time as marathon runners cross the finish line. LMTs are being sought out more and more for their extensive knowledge of how the body moves in order to help facilitate an athletes event or to help recovery from an injury sustained while in training. The athletes I am speaking about range from weekend warriors to the individuals who get paid for their skills. LMTs can help them all.

How can massage therapy help your tness routine?

According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), massage can help in the following ways: Reduces muscle tension Increases range of motion Reduces swelling Decreases muscle stiffness and fatigue

LMTs are being sought out more and more for their extensive knowledge of how the body moves in order to help facilitate an athletes event or to help recovery from an injury sustained while in training.
These are just a small handful of the benefits an athlete can gain from massage. As an athlete receives bodywork, the LMT helps the athlete become more aware of how he or she is moving on and off the field. With this awareness comes the ability to improve performance and limit injury; thus, allowing that athlete to continue doing what he or she loves! connective tissue and releasing nervous tension. They are found during an event addressing a muscle spasm. LMTs are also working after an event to assist in metabolic recovery and help the muscles return to resting tone and length. Usually, all of these services are kept less than 15 minutes and are generally focused on large muscle groups. When it is not event day, many athletes seek out an LMT to help address trouble spots. This type of massage is often done in a clinic setting and is typically 30-90 minutes in length. It is in the treatment room where an LMT can shine. A therapist starts to become a bit of a detective as he or she sorts through information regarding

the issue or injury. After a thorough intake is completed, a therapist can choose to use a combination of many techniques to address the presenting problem. Deep tissue, myofascial, stretching and traditional Swedish massage, as well as many other techniques, are blended together to target the concern in order for that athlete to perform at his or her best. So, if you are feeling a bit beat up from your workout, seek out an LMT and get some relief so you can continue to stay active!

The smart whey to fuel your workout

By Lisa Jermain

or years, I did a lot of things wrong when it came to workouts and nutrition. My biggest mistake was thinking I could out-exercise a questionable diet. Burning more cardio calories than I was taking in would have to lead to weight loss, right? Then why didnt it work? I felt that way, and I hear that question from clients all the time. I have never been a competitive athlete, but have enjoyed exercise and understood the need for it to be a regular part of my life. Despite working out, though, I struggled for years to stay in a healthy weight range. I did early morning workouts on an empty stomach, thinking I would burn fat, since nothing else was in my system. I carb loaded before a race and ate bagels afterward, even if it was only a 30-minute run. When I trained for a marathon, I felt I should be able to eat anything I wanted after running 16, 18 or 20 miles. If you have fallen into these traps, there are simple changes you can make. Lets start with what to have before a workout. Your body needs the right nutrition 45-60 minutes before exercise to set you up to perform during the workout and get the gains you seek. This minimeal should include an energy source from carbs (in moderation not a heaping mound of spaghetti the night before a 5K). It also

needs a protein high in branch chain amino acids to help avoid muscle breakdown. If you dont eat prior to a workout, you may draw some on fat stores, but you may also become catabolic and break down muscle. This is what happens when you are so sore after a hard workout that it is hard to move for a few days. In my opinion, the best protein source is undenatured whey. Whey is easily absorbed and is delivered to the muscles through the bloodstream to support them during the workout. Undenatured is a term that refers to how the protein is processed. If it is undenatured, it is processed at a low temperature, so the protein doesnt break down before it ever enters your body. You want to be able to absorb and use all that you take in, so looking for an

undenatured protein is key. You also want to start your workout positive and focused. Plant-based adaptogens or a small amount of caffeine can help get you in the right mindset to make the most of your time in the gym. After the workout, you need to refuel. For 30 minutes after your workout, your body is a sponge and is anxious to replace what is lost. Aim to consume most of your carbs for the day around your workout. Thirty percent should come before the workout and 40 percent shortly afterward. During this window, there is a lot of blood running to the muscles, so it is a great time to take in more protein to help with muscle growth and recovery. A colleague of mine states that failing to take advantage of the protein window after a workout is like working a 40-hour week and then not cashing the paycheck. There are a lot of good sources of protein, such as lean meats, egg whites and fish. But undenatured whey is a quick and easy option that delivers more bang for your buck. It is quickly absorbed and helps with fat burning and muscle growth helping to improve body composition, fuel metabolism and make our bodies more efficient. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a serious athlete, getting the right nutrition before, during and after workouts can help you get the most of out of the time you invest in exercise.

Home composting
By Jennifer Semrau

ow that the weather is finally warming up, many are out in the yard cleaning debris, pruning and raking. What should you do with all of that organic material? Compost it! Composting is easy, and this article will provide the tools to get you started.

What is compost?

Compost is a soil-like material which results from the breakdown of organic materials. Compost is considered a soil amendment or a soil conditioner, not a fertilizer, as it doesnt usually contain high levels of macro-nutrients. Compost improves the water holding capacity of soil and allows for greater root penetration. Finished compost is a rich, dark color and does not have an offensive odor.

How do I start?

First, you will need to determine where to locate your compost pile on your property. The area should be convenient (consider how far you are willing to walk to place material in the pile), yet there are a few guidelines to consider. The compost pile should be at least 3 feet away from your home or other buildings. Ideally, it will be within reach of a garden hose, in an area with good drainage and protected from direct winds. Of course, be considerate of

your neighbors while choosing a spot for your compost pile. Second, you should determine what type of compost structure to use. Many local counties sell compost bins. These black bins include a removable, lockable lid, doors at the bottom to remove the finished product and are made of recycled materials. Some local hardware stores also sell compost bins. An alternative to a commercial compost bin is to build your own. Doing so allows you to determine the size of your compost pile and bin construction material. Most do-it-yourself compost methods simply enclose the pile from three or more sides. Wire fencing, snow fencing or wooden pallets can all be used to build an enclosure for your compost pile. Often commercial compost bins are used in more urban environments, while compost piles are prevalent in rural areas.

The recipe for successful composting is to have a mix of browns and greens in your compost pile.
Cooking your compost
Composting is considered natures recycling. It is a natural process that will occur in the right environment without any human involvement. Leaving grass clippings to decompose or leaves to rot on the lawn are examples of composting. But there are ways you can speed up the composting process and adding the right mix of ingredients will help compost cook faster. The recipe for successful composting is to have a mix of browns and greens in your compost pile. Browns are dry materials such as dried leaves and woody scraps (wood chips, wood shavings, small twigs, sawdust, etc.). Greens are fresh, moist materials such as grass clippings and fruit and vegetable trimmings. A mix of half browns and half greens is preferable for compost generation. The compost should also be kept moist (like a wrung-out sponge), but not wet.

How long will it take?

The speed of your finished compost is partially determined by the effort placed in maintaining your compost pile. In a hot compost pile, microbes in the yard waste multiply and rapidly break down organic material, literally generating heat. A hot pile requires active maintenance by the home owner and needs to be of sufficient size to generate heat. Hot composting requires periodic turning to mix materials and allow oxygen to circulate. Maintaining the proper moisture level is also necessary in a hot pile as the material will become inactive if too dry, but overly wet materials will not allow air circulation. Hot piles can generate compost in as little as two to four months. Cool composting is a more laid back way to recycle organic materials. Composting is natural decomposition, so it will happen eventually. Cool composting is low maintenance, typically with infrequent turning and little attention paid to moisture. Cool piles produce compost in six to 12 months or more. Finished compost will look like dark, crumbly soil. Use it in potting mixes for indoor and outdoor plants; spread it around flowers, shrubs and trees; or incorporate it into your garden soil. Which senior living option is best?

ust like anything else in life, being prepared for the future is a good idea. Understanding your or a loved ones senior living options is no exception. Consider whether one of the options below would be a good fit for your circumstances.

In-home care

CCRCs

In-home care can be provided by loved ones, friends, neighbors or professional caregivers. In-home care typically includes assistance with day-to-day tasks such as bathing, walking or cooking. If care needs are more extensive or medically intensive, in-home care may not be appropriate.

Independent living

Independent living is for older adults who wish to live independently while benefiting from the advantages of an enhanced social, cultural and recreational lifestyle. With services like weekly housekeeping, laundry, lawn care and snow removal, independent living residents are free from the burden of home-maintenance concerns and have more time to enjoy the things they love.

Assisted living

Assisted living is for seniors who need help with the activities of daily living. Residents enjoy the same services as independent living residents, but with the added assistance in areas such as bathing, dressing, grooming, medication, etc. Services can be increased or decreased over time as needs change.

Memory care

Memory care communities provide supportive health and personal care services for those with Alzheimers or related conditions. These communities provide 24-hour care within a specially designed, therapeutic residential setting.

A continuing care retirement community, or CCRC, is part independent living, part assisted living and part skilled nursing. It offers a tiered approach to the aging process and provides a continuum of care for residents. Many CCRCs also offer a range of services, amenities, and health and wellness programs designed to help residents stay healthy and independent for as long as possible. As a not-for-profit CCRC in a residential neighborhood in the heart of Oshkosh, Evergreen is an industry leader in providing choices in programs, services and environments. Founded in 1965 by Howard and Ruth Rowland, Evergreen has consistently been a sought-out and vibrant community for individuals 55 and older. Today, Evergreen offers in-home services through Evergreen At Home, as well as independent living, assisted living, and long- and short-term skilled nursing care on its main campus. When I moved to Evergreen, I felt like I bought the best insurance policy ever, says Hope Linton, long-time resident. The weight of the world rolled off my shoulders. Every day Im thankful for the privilege of being here. Living at Evergreen is all about choice, value, freedom and community. With life-enrichment opportunities that promote wellness in all aspects of healthy living, Evergreen encourages individuals to choose a positive lifestyle that balances the health and well-being of mind, body and spirit. Innovative and unique amenities, activities and services guarantee that at Evergreen, possibilities await!

Is wheat gluten bad?

By Grandma Rose (Rosalie Misco)

any people are going gluten-free and they say they feel much better for doing so. A larger number of folks have no problem digesting gluten. What are we to believe? The answer is elusive at this time, but lets examine the facts that we do know. Those with a celiac sensitivity, about 1 percent of the population, cannot digest gluten due to genetics. However, 30 percent of the population have gone gluten-free. They report that they feel relieved of bloating, they have more energy and they feel better overall. Should we then conclude that gluten, wheat, rye and barley are bad? What do we need to take out of our diet to be gluten-free? In addition to wheat, rye and barley, we need to decrease our consumption of processed foods. A wide variety of chemicals and artificial dyes, in addition to gluten, have been added to processed foods in recent years. When we remove processed foods from our diet, we remove the unnatural chemical substances, along with gluten. Gluten is a naturally occurring protein found in grains that have been consumed for thousands of years without difficulty. The chemicals used in processed foods are not natural and their consumption seems to parallel the gluten problem. Is gluten causing the digestion problem or is it the chemicals? Recent research has shown that our digestive system requires good bacteria in our gut to digest food. If those bacteria are not in proper balance, digestive problems result. Are the artificial chemicals in the processed foods with gluten responsible for killing off our digestive bacteria? When we remove the gluten from our diet, the chemicals go as well. Wheat gluten is a natural food, while chemicals are not. Whole, unprocessed foods feed the good digestive bacteria and may heal the digestive system, making it possible to eat healthy glutencontaining grains without added chemicals once again. Be careful! Gluten-free bakery products made with rice, potato, tapioca flour and corn starch are extremely high in starch (starch has no nutrients and has almost no fiber). Starch is equal to sugar.
www.naturespathways.com

These very high starch flours feed Candida yeast, which is naturally occurring in our gut. If Candida yeast gets out of control because of a high starch/sugar diet, it is very difficult to get rid of, and messes with the natural bacteria balance in our gut. Excessive starch/sugar also causes weight gain and blood sugar spikes. Bean flours are a better choice, as they contain protein and fiber and are lower in starch. Digestive bacteria love resistant starch fiber. Hi-maize 260 is a natural resistant starch fiber that can be easily added to foods. It prevents the digestion of starch, feeds good gut bacteria, and controls blood sugar and weight. Abundant research proves these benefits. Hi maize 260 is made from a special non-GMO corn.

Say goodbye to your unhealthy habit

Essential oils can help
By Ann McCotter

e all have, or have had, bad habits that we would like to disappear. For some, its smoking, for me its a sugar addiction and for others its being too quick to anger. In each of these cases, a well-planned approach to change can be supported by the use of essential oils. Yes, essential oils can help you ditch that bad habit. Successful change takes work, but its very possible. By using the process described below, you too can say goodbye to your unhealthy habit. First, work to understand your desire to change. Barriers can keep you from making the change and ultimately determine if now is the right time for change. Why are you ready to make the change now? Next, document all of the reasons that are driving you to make this change. This step is all about building awareness. Then, develop a plan for making sure that you do what you say you are going to do in regard to the changes you have planned.

In the case of a smoking addiction, black pepper essential oil has been shown in clinical trials to help suppress nicotine cravings.
This step is all about accountability. The fourth step is to develop a specific plan with measurable goals. This step is all about determining the action needed to make the change happen. As part of the action, consider using essential oils to support your change process. Essential oils can help to support mood, suppress cravings, support detox and more. In every situation, follow-up is required to check in, assess progress and most importantly to celebrate success. Throughout all of the steps, stay focused on the positives. Look for what is possible as opposed to focusing all of your energy on whats wrong. Envision the future you without that unwanted habit. What will life be like for you once you are a nonsmoker, free of a constant desire for sugary sweets or able to hold your temper in stressful situations? Essential oils are great tools to help you get through that tough stage before a new behavior is fully engrained and becomes a habit. In the case of a smoking addiction, black pepper essential oil has been shown in clinical trials to help suppress nicotine cravings. Lemon and eucalyptus essential oils can also be very helpful to smokers. In the case of a sugar addiction, the Slim and Sassy metabolic blend can help to reduce cravings. For anger issues,

lavender essential oil is very calming and Balance essential oil can help reduce anxiety. There are many more types of essential oils and ways to use them to support your change process. The three ways to benefit from certified pure therapeutic-grade essential oils are: aromatically (get those oils into the air you breathe), topically (applied on the skin) and internally (ingested through the mouth). This article addresses how to use certified pure therapeuticgrade essential oils. Not all essential oils are designed for these types of uses. Of course, consult your medical professional before use. n a recent night out, I decided to venture away from my typical health food diet; I was craving a great Wisconsin fish fry. After asking around, I heard that Marks East Side has the best all you can eat haddock special on Friday nights, so we decided to try that. Walking into Marks East Side, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mark greeting customers and talking with his guests. It showed a true passion for his familys long time restaurant and you could tell he loved his guests and was equally loved back. It was 5 p.m. on a Friday and they were packed! The environment was very warm and friendly and certainly my favorite supper club environment I had ever been in with a freshly remodeled interior, large fish tank behind the bar and the best bathrooms in town! We asked Mark what their specialties were, and he said with passion that German food, seafood and great steaks were their specialty. However, I was also surprised to learn that they are happy to cater to the vegetarian pallet and also offer a full menu of gluten-free options. There is certainly something for everyone! This particular evening, I stuck with my craving for fish and ordered the all-youcan-eat haddock with fries, warm rolls and house-made coleslaw. We started the meal out with the recommended sauerkraut balls and absolutely loved them! The hand-rolled sauerkraut was tangy and complemented the horseradish dipping sauce perfectly. They were delicious! We also tried the spinach and artichoke dip, which our server
74
Natures Pathways | May 2014

stated was the best in town. As we ate the warm, freshly baked dip with fresh cut warm bread with the perfect amount of crunch, we realized she was right. The white fish was handbattered and was done to perfection, served with their house-made tartar sauce. I actually ordered a second serving! Im very particular when it comes to fish, and this exceeded my expectations. My guest, being a fan of the occasional glass of bourbon, decided to try the bourbon-glazed steak served with a side order of potato. The steak came out warm and cooked perfectly to his medium rare liking. There was no need for A1 sauce because the perfect tang of the bourbon was something you cant find anywhere else. The garlic mashed potatoes were a great side dish to complement this heartwarming meal that we couldnt have replicated at home. Even though we were stuffed to the gills, we had to try the homemade caramel apple cheesecake served with a glass of dessert wine. There are no words to describe the piece of heaven that sat on this plate! I am usually not a person who orders dessert; however, that changes any time I see this special on the menu. The crisp, crumbly topping was amazing on top of the sweet and creamy filling stuffed with apples on

top of a delightful crust served with a side of whip cream. We were raving about our meal for days! Marks East Side is the perfect warm environment for a date night or a dinner or lunch with friends and family. They also have a comfortable backroom for your private parties and feature fun events throughout the year. Be sure to visit next St Pattys Day to see Mark dressed up as a leprechaun or stop by during the holidays for the best Tom and Jerry cocktail in the area!

carefully researched. Who owns it? Who works there? What types of certifications do the instructors have? Does everyone have the same certifications or different ones? In a great facility, everyone will have different certifications and bring different ideas to the table. Is there one individual (usually the owner) with an outside certification and everyone else is trained by them? This is a major red flag because one person is the expert and everyone else teaching there merely parrots what they have learned from one viewpoint. A great studio to train at is the facility where every instructor has multiple certifications and training from different places. A facility where the owner encourages (requires) staff to continually pursue new knowledge and will help provide resources for further study. A true expert doesnt consider themselves an expert but instead a student who is always learning and growing. So another great marker is to see how recent the instructors last learning experience was, either via certification, training weekend, workshop or an outside lesson for their own personal growth. An excellent facility will support the growth of instructors and provide opportunities for them to continue studying and excellent instructors will continue to pursue learning about what they want to teach. If youre looking to go on a real fitness journey with an expert, then look for the program that is filled with instructors who have a desire to learn!

Clearing mental clutter

By Phyllis Kasper, Ph.D.

n the spring, we clean out the closets and the garage and clear the old twigs and leaves from the lawn. While were at it, what about clearing out the mental closet? There is a lot to be gained by starting to clear out old beliefs, attitudes and habits one at a time. Youll be amazed at how much can be gained with this simple procedure. Take a little time to reflect on small changes you could start to make today to be happier and healthier. You might already be attuned to something you could change, like drinking healthy green tea instead of coffee. Or, if the idea of tea makes you say, Yuck, I love my coffee, bring the coffee down to just one per day. Make it the tastiest organic coffee you can find at the right time of day so that it is a real treat to savor. You might already know that your episodes of road rage add to your own stress level and dont get other people to drive any better. Letting go of road rage will make you a happier and safer driver. A few years ago, I noticed that my habit of hoping that guy that cut me off would land in the ditch set me up for a negative day in general. I would walk into work feeling indignant, self-righteous and looking for a fight. So I replaced the negative habit with a short prayer for that wild driver. Just a little Buddhist prayer: May he be healthy, happy and safe from all harm. It still doesnt change the other driver, but it takes me into work or my home in a better mood. Speaking of road rage, did you know that after 9/11, serious incidents of road rage greatly increased in the New York area?

Therapists trained in energy psychology techniques volunteered to do free workshops and therapy on road rage. The main techniques used were TFT (Thought Field Therapy) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). Both of these involve tapping or gently rubbing on a few of your acupuncture points and are very effective. The idea is to be prepared, so that that you can use a short, simple version of a technique that wont get in the way of driving. One way to prepare is to learn to find the tender spot on the left side of your chest. Before getting into the car, learn to find it by pressing firmly with two fingers all around the left side of your chest. Youll probably have no trouble finding a spot that is more sensitive, if not, just rub in a large circle. Either way, as you start to feel angry, rub firmly in a circle on the left side of your chest and

tell yourself that you fully and completely love and accept yourself with all your problems and limitations. Its not about the other driver; its about you feeling okay with yourself in a stressful situation. If you feel clueless as to what small change would make a difference, dare to ask someone else what they notice about you. Another approach would be to simply observe yourself throughout a day and notice what habits could be changed. A common problem might be using words like always and never against others. Make the change as an experiment and see what happens. This reminds me of the case of the man who made friends with his wifes cat. He made a strategic decision to make his wife happier and decided to make friends with her cat without telling her. The result was all three of them being much more relaxed at home and his wife feeling that he truly loved her. Experiment and see what happens. You have nothing to lose but a bad habit.

ost people recognize the fact that they need to get exercise into their daily lives. It is amazing how few people actually make it happen. We are here to help you stick with your goals! We want you to be successful! Finding a fitness facility that is affordable and welcoming can be a challenge. Anytime Fitness, the areas first 24-hour fitness, tanning and reciprocal facility, offers the convenience and affordability many people are seeking. People want to exercise on their own terms: whenever their busy schedules allow, close to their homes or workplaces and when they travel. Thats why Anytime Fitness clubs are open 24/7 allowing members to work out any time of the day or night as well as during the crucial holiday seasons. What could be more convenient than that? Todd Meulemans, 47, joined Anytime Fitness Appleton East a little over three years ago. High blood pressure and heart disease run in my family so its important to me to be active, he says. A previous member of another facility, he was spurred to join Anytime Fitness due to convenience and cost. The club is literally three minutes away from my house, he says. The other club was always too crowded when I wanted to work out. At Anytime Fitness, I can go in when I want and get on the machines that I want. Its always so nice and clean, and the people who work there are very friendly and helpful. I recommend it to everyone. At Anytime Fitness, we pride ourselves as being the friendly neighborhood club. With our non-intimidating atmosphere, we are a great fit from the first-time exerciser to the experienced fitness mogul. Each member who joins receives one-on-one attention from one of our certified personal trainers. Get kids excited about gardening

any adults understand the joy of gardening, but gardening can be equally fun for children as well. While some adults may feel that certain children do not have the patience or perseverance to see plants grow from seeds to adulthood, selecting plants that are hardy and sprout quickly may be the key to igniting a love of gardening in children. Choosing seeds that sprout quickly can hold the attention of children who are new to gardening. Many different plants fit this bill. Beans, peas, sunflower seeds and bell pepper seeds are easy to start and germinate quickly. In addition, many leafy vegetables, such as chard, lettuce, spinach and mustard, germinate in three to five days. Herbs, such as basil and parsley, also sprout fast. All of these plants are good options for introducing children to gardening, as each provides quick gratification. To further interest children, it is a good idea to plant seeds in a way that allows youngsters to monitor the progress of growth. Use a transparent container, such as rinsed-out glass jars and canisters, to house the plant. Such containers give kids an unobstructed view of the process, during which children can plot the progress of seed germination and easily spot root and stem development. Once the seedlings grow larger, they can be transplanted into different containers. Many seedlings can sprout with water alone. Children can easily grow new plants from clippings of a mature plant left resting in a shallow cup of water, and seeds may not even need soil to germinate. Kids may have luck sprinkling seeds on a dampened, crumpled-up piece of paper towel. Cotton balls also make a good place to nestle seeds. Either material will hold on to water, keeping the seeds moist until they sprout. Afterward, the seedlings can be carefully moved into a soil-and-compost mix. The paper towel and the cotton balls will decompose and add to the organic matter already in the soil.

Edible plants often make good choices for children because kids can reap the rewards of their efforts.
Edible plants often make good choices for children because kids can reap the rewards of their efforts. Herbs can be sprinkled onto food, or fruits and vegetables can be grown in containers and then served at mealtime. Kids can show pride in their accomplishments, especially if they have tangible results on the dinner plate. Children who want to try something different can explore other types of plants. Aquatic plants, or those found at the pet store to grow in aquariums, can be easy to grow. They need little more than a container, fresh water and sunlight. Cacti and other succulents are also fun to explore. These plants are quite hardy in that they can stand up to moderate abuse, such as failure to water frequently enough. The unique appearance of cacti make them interesting focal points for an indoor garden. A love of gardening thats fostered inside can also be explored outdoors. Set aside a plot of dirt where kids can sow their own seeds and tend to their own gardens. This hobby can help children learn patience and hard work while fostering an appreciation of nature.

Cats claw
(Uncaria tomentosa, Uncaria guianensis)

ats claw, or ua de gato, grows wild in many countries of Central and South America, especially in the Amazon rainforest. The use of this woody vine dates back to the Inca civilization. Historically, cats claw has been used for centuries in South America to prevent and treat disease. More recently, cats claw has been used as a folk or traditional remedy for a variety of health conditions, including viral infections (such as herpes and HIV), Alzheimers disease, cancer and arthritis. Other folk uses include supporting the immune system and promoting kidney health, as well as preventing and aborting pregnancy. The inner bark of cats claw is used to make liquid extracts, capsules and teas. Preparations of cats claw can also be applied to the skin.

Small studies in humans have shown a possible benefit of cats claw in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, but no large trials have been done. In laboratory studies, cats claw stimulates part of the immune system, but it has not been proven to reduce inflammation or boost the immune system in humans. The National Institute on Aging funded a study that looked at how cats claw may affect the brain. Findings may point to new avenues for research in Alzheimers disease treatment.

Side effects and cautions

What the science says

There is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether cats claw works for any health condition.

Few side effects have been reported for cats claw when it is taken at recommended dosages. Though rare, side effects may include headaches, dizziness and vomiting. Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should avoid using cats claw because of its past use for preventing and aborting pregnancy. Because cats claw may stimulate the immune system, it is unclear whether the herb is safe for people with conditions affecting the immune system. Additionally, cats claw may interfere with controlling blood pressure during or after surgery. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about complementary and alternative medicine, see the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines Time to Talk campaign.

The National Institutes of Health and World Health Organization recognize acupuncture as effective in treating addiction, emotional problems, arthritis, asthma, carpal tunnel, digestive complaints, pain in tendons, joints and muscles, trigeminal neuralgia, UTI, fertility, menopause, sinusitis and sleep disturbances.
