NAME: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Class:----------------

Text:
Balla had never thought in his life that an educator could be so rude, and tough towards a pupil. He was
going to a private boarding-school in town, some kilometers away from an outlying district which was
commonly called cit des pauvres where he had once lived in his childhood.
In spite of the difficulties he faced after his retirement some years ago, Amdy had always paid his sons
fees. That time, however, he failed to do so.
The headmistress who apparently looked well over sixty years ago, waited until the kids were about to join
the refectory, kept silence as if she were speaking to the whole crowd of pupils gathered in the schoolyard.
I am talking to Balla, Amdys son, you cant go into the dining room this time. Your father has not paid yet.
Dont move an inch ahead. Come back here, she said with a certain firmness.
Her words were like a gunshot right into the boys heart. They had a terrible effect on him. So he ran home
as quickly as he could.
Nobody could imagine how ashamed he felt. Even the idea of committing suicide occurred to him, but he
fortunately repelled it. The old man would feel responsible for his death.
That would be too much for Dad to live with, he thought.
Later when the little boy told his father about the incident, he nearly fainted. But what could he do as they
almost lived in extreme poverty?
Although the boy was a good student, he began to detest school and the headmistress whom he thought of
as a monster.
Giving up school like this for such a clever boy, that is a mess, everybody thought. Yet the boy was so
shocked that he couldnt do otherwise.
After he had made up his mind to leave school, a lot of people including the headmistress, herself, tried to
persuade him not to do so, but he refused. He thought that he had made a good choice.
