The J apanese Language Program (J LP) is designed at each level to help students attain the J apanese language skills necessary for
future research in specialized fields. The program also offers a range of levels and subjects to meet the needs of students studying at
Keio University on exchange.
(Program Outline (for Monbukagakusho and regular
students)
(1) Program features
The J LP is taught using the direct method of teaching and
offers a range of course levels and subjects allowing students
to find a program of study that matches their needs and
interests. The curriculum is designed at every level to help
students to build the language skills necessary for future
research in specialized disciplines. Students in advanced
levels are also able to deepen their cultural knowledge by
taking subjects from J apanese Studies on Society and
Culture. Students who meet the registration requirements
may also take a limited number of credit- bearing
undergraduate or graduate subjects. In addition, students
may take optional subjects conducted in English from those
listed as International Studies or J apanese Studies subjects
offered by International Center.
(2)Quota: 180 students (including a small no. of
Monbukagakusho students) The average class size is 20
students, with enrollment varying from semester to semester.
(3)Prerequisites
Applicants must have graduated from senior high school or
the equivalent. Preference is given to applicants who have
studied in a specialized discipline in their undergraduate
programs.

Dutch learning by Yukichi Fukuzawa, a highly

the fundamental J apanese skills
necessary for study at each level.

The goal of Subjects with a Specific
Focus is to improve the speaking,
listening, reading, and writing skills of
each student.

Culture>
J apanese Studies on Society and
Culture are designed to deepen
students knowledge of J apanese
culture and society. They are suitable
for students at advanced levels.

Students also have the option of taking
subjects offered by International Center.

International student organizations arrange activities such as conversation partners, J apanese Club,
speech contests, cultural exchanges, excursions, J apanese cultural activities, and bazaars.
To successfully complete the program, students must be enrolled for one year and pass two different
levels. To pass each level, students must meet the requirements regarding subjects and credits (Ref.
see (5){Compulsory Courses and credits). Those who have completed the program will be awarded a
Certificate of Completion.
(7) Recognition of credits; transferring credits
Students who are in Level 8 or above may take undergraduate and graduate subjects. In the J LP
students are able to receive credits for a maximum of two subjects (four credits). The students home
institutions rules apply regarding the transferring of credits.
(Housing
Keio University has a limited number of off-campus rooms. Arrangements will be on a first-come, first-
served basis. The monthly rent is about 56,000-77,000 yen, with most rooms about an hour away from
Mita Campus.
(Follow-up to JLP graduates
Each semester, the J LP office send out questionnaire to those students who just completed J LP study to
ask their courses after J LP. Among the various courses they take, three most frequent choices
are Return to home country to work, Advance to graduate school in J apan, Work in J apan. Most
J LP graduates continue to pursue their successful career in their own field.
Levels
The program curriculum is designed for students at every
level and accepts students regardless of their J apanese
ability or previous marks as long as they have advanced
skills in a specialized field and a strong motivation to learn
the J apanese language.
There are 12 language levels in the J LP. Student levels are
determined by a placement test given at the beginning of
semester. The levels are described below.
<Levels 1-3>
Suitable for beginners. Successful completion should enable
facility in conversation necessary for everyday life, and an
ability to read and write simple sentences.
<Levels 4-7>
Suitable for students who have mastered the fundamental
J apanese skills. Students who complete the course will be
able to use and understand average levels of spoken and
written J apanese.
<Levels 8-10>
Suitable for students who have sufficient knowledge of
J apanese to express themselves and understand most
J apanese used in daily life. These levels aim to equip
students with the skills to sufficiently understand university
lectures, read text/reference books, write papers and take
examinations.
<Levels 11-12>
Suitable for students who have attained a high level of
J apanese proficiency. These levels aims to produce students
who can:
(1) understand lectures in a specialized discipline,
(2) participate in discussions and present reports at seminars,
(3) read specialized books at a good pace and
(4) write a thesis.
Study paths
The J LP is comprised of The Comprehensive Course and
The Alternative Course.
<The Comprehensive Course>Students will
comprehensively study Core Subjects, Subjects with a
Specific Focus and/or J apanese Studies on Society and
Culture.
<The Alternative Course>This course is open for students at
level four or above and is for students taking only Subjects
with a Specific Focus and/ or J apanese Studies on Society
and Culture.

1 History
In 1882, Shigenobu Okuma, one of the leading
political figures of the Meiji Era, founded Tokyo
College for Technical Studies (Tokyo-senmon- gakko),
with the aim of upholding independence of learning,
promoting the practical utilization of knowledge and
fostering good citizenship. In l902, this institution
became Waseda University.
Waseda University now consists of 13 undergraduate
schools, 22 graduate schools and various affiliated
research institutes. It has about 2,700 full-time faculty
members and administrators as of April 2011), and
about 57,500 students as of May2011). Its history
and tradition, the number of graduates and their
achievements and the high level of teaching and

language intensively. This program is for those who

their own abilities and goals.

Credits given to each subject are based on the

Ankoku Ron, which was written by Nichiren when
he was 39 years old.

Hachioji City is located about 40 kilometers west of the heart of
Tokyoapproximately 40 minutes by train from Shinjuku Station.
The city has developed as a major central area of Tama District,
becoming an academic city with as many as 23 universities and
schools. The area is well known for its abundance of nature, and
in particular, the city contains Mt. Takao, which attracts many

A certificate of attendance and transcript are awarded
to students who earn credits from taking seven or more
classes per week. Transcripts are issued according to
the following schedules:

Mens dormitory
A block for international students at Houyu Dormitory
(maximum capacity 64 students)
This dormitory houses a mixture of J apanese and
international students. All rooms are Western-style with
double occupancy. The following facilities are available:
large communal bathing area, bathroom, dining room,
kitchen (equipped with microwave oven and refrigerator),
meeting room, lounge, J apanese-style room, washer and
dryer (paid), and air conditioners (shared)
Room equipment
Bed, linen, clothes rack, chest of drawers, desk, chair, and
bookshelf
Twenty minutes' walk from the university
Womens dormitory
- Cosmos Dormitory (maximum capacity 80 students)
- Sunflower Hall (maximum capacity 40 students)
This dormitory is for international students only. All rooms
are Western-style with single occupancy. The following
facilities are available: large communal bathing area,
bathroom, dining room, kitchen (equipped with microwave
oven, refrigerator, and shared rice cooker), meeting room,
lounge, J apanese-style room, washer and dryer (paid),
and air conditioners
Room equipment
Bed, linen, clothes rack, chest of drawers, desk, chair and
bookshelf
Fifteen to twenty minutes' walk from the university

Students who have completed a course may
join the graduates association in their country.
