From The Pastors Desk...

As I write this Im attending the Clergy Conference at the St Josephs Spirituality Centre, Kincumber, the now annual live-in inservice for the clergy of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. The focus of the week has been exploring the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, and its significance for us as clergy, and for the Diocese, and for the parishes of the Diocese. We have been blessed to have with us Frs Elio Capra sdb and Noel Connolly ssc as presenters and facilitators. Over the course of the week we have explored the major themes to be found in the Exhortation, and alsoperhaps more importantlyhad a chance to look at how what Pope Francis has had to say in this document might challenge usthe Churchto focus on the joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to make it known to the world. It is very clear that there are no easy solutions presented in the Exhortation, but there is most definitely a new approach to be had, an approach that focuses not on the difficulties the Church might face but rather the great gift we have been given in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The challenge to all of us laity, religious and clergyis to recognise what we have received and then to live in response to that gift. As I mentioned in my homily last weekend, Christians can sometimes be too serious, too dour, in our outlook, as if the Gospel is a burden that we have to endure. The reality is quite the opposite. As Pope Francis says quite clearly in Evangelii Gaudium the Gospel is not a burden, it is a joy, and a joy that comes because in the Gospel we have hope even in the face of difficulties that might confront us and the world. This joy and hope is also something Pope Francis witnesses to in the way he lives his life and his actions as Bishop of Rome. We could do worse than to emulate that joy and hope in our daily lives and in our living and proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If you havent had a chance to read the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium then I would strongly encourage you to do so. Its a long document, but a very readable document from a Pope who clearly has taken the joy and hope brought by the Good News of Jesus Christ into his very self, and allowed it to show forth in his person and in his actions. See page five for more details on how you might get hold of a copy of this document. Until next week Fr Andrew

Challenges to Inculturating the Faith

The Christian substratum of certain peoplesmost of all in the Westis a living reality. Here we find, especially among the most needy, a moral resource which preserves the values of an authentic Christian humanism. Seeing reality with the eyes of faith, we cannot fail to acknowledge what the Holy Spirit is sowing. It would show a lack of trust in his free and unstinting activity to think that authentic Christian values are absent where great numbers of people have received baptism and express their faith and solidarity with others in a variety of ways. This means more than acknowledging occasional seeds of the word, since it has to do with an authentic Christian faith which has its own expressions and means of showing its relationship to the Church. The immense importance of a culture marked by faith cannot be overlooked; before the onslaught of contemporary secularism an evangelized culture, for all its limits, has many more resources than the mere sum total of believers. An evangelized popular culture contains values of faith and solidarity capable of encouraging the development of a more just and believing society, and possesses a particular wisdom which ought to be gratefully acknowledged. It is imperative to evangelize cultures in order to inculturate the Gospel. In countries of Catholic tradition, this means encouraging, fostering and reinforcing a richness which already exists. In countries of other religious traditions, or profoundly secularized countries, it will mean sparking new processes for evangelizing culture, even though these will demand long-term planning. We must keep in mind, however, that we are constantly being called to grow. Each culture and social group needs purification and growth. In the case of the popular cultures of Catholic peoples, we can see deficiencies which need to be healed by the Gospel: machismo, alcoholism, domestic violence, low Mass attendance, fatalistic or superstitious notions which lead to sorcery, and the like. Popular piety itself can be the starting point for healing and liberation from these deficiencies. It is also true that at times greater emphasis is placed on the outward expressions and traditions of some groups, or on alleged private revelations which would replace all else, than on the impulse of Christian piety. There is a kind of Christianity made up of devotions reflecting an individual and sentimental faith life which does not in fact correspond to authentic popular piety. Some people promote these expressions while not being in the least concerned with the advancement of society or the
5

formation of the laity, and in certain cases they do so in order to obtain economic benefits or some power over others. Nor can we overlook the fact that in recent decades there has been a breakdown in the way Catholics pass down the Catholic faith to the young. It is undeniable that many people feel disillusioned and no longer identify with the Catholic tradition. Growing numbers of parents do not bring their children for baptism or teach them how to pray. There is also a certain exodus towards other faith communities. The causes of this breakdown include: a lack of opportunity for dialogue in families, the influence of the communications media, a relativistic subjectivism, unbridled consumerism which feeds the market, lack of pastoral care among the poor, the failure of our institutions to be welcoming, and our difficulty in restoring a mystical adherence to the faith in a pluralistic religious landscape. Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 68-70. If you would like to read more of Evangelii Gaudium, copies are available for purchase ($10) or borrowing from the Parish Office. The Exhortation is also available for downloading from the Vatican website by visiting http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/ apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_ esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html.

Social Justice and Human Rights

You are invited to a free public talk by Mark Isaacs about the Nauru Detention Centre to be held on Sunday 4th May 2014 at 2pm in the Holy Name School Hall, Lake Street, Forster. "How long will we be here?" one man asked. Nobody could answer him. Nobody knew. The intention was clear: this was the No Advantage policy. Take them to a distant island, lock them away, punish them, forget about them. Criminals were given a sentence to serve, these men were not even given that. Lost hope ebbed out of the men in uncontrollable sobs and tears. Queue jumpers, boat people, illegals........... Asylum seekers are contentious front page news, but obtaining information about Australia's regional processing centres is increasingly difficult. We only learn what the government wants us to know. Mark Isaacs worked for the Salvation Army inside Nauru Detention Centre soon after it re-opened in 2012. He provided humanitarian aid to the men interned in the camp. What he saw there moved him to speak out. Mark's confronting book, entitled The Undesirables, chronicles his time in Nauru, detailing daily life and the stories of the men held there; the self-harm, suicide attempts and riots; the rare moments of joy; the moments of despair. Mark's eyewitness account humanises a political debate usually ruled by misleading rhetoric. "I was a stranger and you welcomed me" - Matthew 25:35. Now more than ever, it is vitally important for faith communities to foster a culture of hospitality, encounter and acceptance. How do we nurture the spirit of justice within us? How are we moved to act for peace and justice? Learn more about the social justice teachings of Christ and follow the commandment to welcome the stranger. The Great Lakes Rural Australians for Refugees invites local communities to Forster on Sunday 4 May to hear a compelling account of the human reality of Australia's Pacific Solution.
