Madison Carithers 5th hour 12-2-13 Endangered species Endangered animals are all over the world, there

are some that are even more endangered than others. An endangered animal is a species that is put in danger of going extinct. We have to be considerate and not drive these animals to extinction like the Zanzibar leopard (1996), West African black rhinoceros (2006), Round Island Burrowing boa (1975), and Golden toad (1989) already have. However, some are close to becoming critically endangered like the snow leopard, white tiger, Philippine tarsier, and the koala but there isnt much being done to help them from becoming extinct. Snow leopards are very rare and are beautiful animals, and there is only about 6,000 left in the world. They are 4-5ft tall and 60-120lbs, and since they have powerful legs they can jump as far as 50ft. These animals live in the mountains of Central Asia and prey on the blue sheep of the Tibet & the Himalayan Mountains. For more than 8 years people have been killing these animals off for fur, destroying their habitat, and the decline in prey has put snow leopards on the verge of extinction. Sadly nothing is being done to help them from going extinct. A koalas life span lasts as long as 20 years, they are 23.5-33.5in tall and are about 20lbs. They are small gray and white fury animals that live in the forests off the Australian Coast. During the 1920s and 1930s they were hunted, and today people have been cutting

down trees, which is where they live, and it has made their population decline a lot. Since koalas have a weak immune system they can easily catch diseases such as the Chlamydia infection, and there is nothing to help them because drugs arent really a practical option. The population of koalas has declined from 100,000 to less than 43,000 in the last six years, so there is a possible chance at this rate that they could be extinct in the next 30 years. Philippine tarsiers are very small, they have very large eyes, and their thick silky fur is gray or dark brown. Philippine tarsiers mostly eat insects, and to catch them, if they are flying bugs they jump cuff their hands together and eat it, but if they are crawler bugs then they will wait for it to stop so it can pounce on it. They are often described as a small, long-tailed monkey even though they were proven that they werent. Their head can also rotate a full 360 degrees, and they are agile acrobats and can easily jump from tree to tree. This creature resides in the Southeast Asian forests. There are a lot of bad superstitions being told about them, like some believe they are evil spirits, and some think that its bad luck to encounter one during a raid (a sudden attack on an enemy). They are very rare to find because they have been dying because people trying to domesticate them. Scientists and other people are trying to get the ones that are left to make offspring to repopulate. White tigers are very beautiful, they are white with black stripes and they have mainly golden or yellowish eyes. Also they are very rare to find in the wild because theyre critically endangered and they might be extinct in a few years. These animals are dying off from disappearing habitat and people hunting them. Most tigers (including a few white) reside in Asia. They do like to kill humans for a food source, out of self-defense or because they feel threatened. Sadly there are only 12 that have been spotted to be left in the world.

Nothing can really be done to help them, even if they try repopulating them there is a very slim chance of 1 of them being a white tiger. We share this planet with many species. It is our responsibility to protect them, both for their sake and our own Pamela A. Matson. If everyone would all work together to help these animals, then we can save most of them from becoming extinct in the near future, and hopefully end the list for endangered species.
