Course Description
This course will show a student with little or no prior experience of music the basics of
reading, writing, and understanding music composition.

Course Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. Read music at a beginning level
2. Notate, hear and identify various music terminology
3. Read and write musical notation
4. Detect pitch and rhythm errors

Assignments and Exam Deadlines
Quizzes will be due on Sundays at 11:59pm.
Practice Worksheets and Listening Assignments will be due on Wednesdays at 11:59pm.

Final Project
The final project will be due on May 16, 2014 at 11:59pm.

Absence/Tardiness Policy
Regular attendance is required for this course. If you know that you are not going to
be able to turn in an assignment or take a quiz on the assigned due date, please
allow yourself enough time to complete it and turn it in EARLY!

Make-up Policy
There will be no make up work for this class.

Assignments and Grading Scale
Practice worksheets (6 @ 10 pts. each) 60 pts.
Listening Assignments (5 @ 15 pts. each) 75 pts.
Assessments (6 @ 20 pts. each) 120 pts.
Final Project 150 pts.

Total: 405 pts.
90%-100% A
80%-89% B
70%-79% C
60-69% D
Below 60% F

Academic Honesty
All student work is expected to be your own. Although you are allowed to use other
peoples ideas, you must give them credit and cite them properly. Plagiarism is not
accepted or tolerated. If it is shown that a student has been academically dishonest,
it will result in failure to the course.

Late Withdrawal Policy
Students have until April 17, 2014 to withdraw from the course, but I encourage
that you speak to the instructor before doing so. After that, a student must file a
Petition to Withdraw through the Registration Office (you may need to provide the
appropriate documentation).

Incomplete Policy
You must have consent from the instructor, be satisfying minimum completion and
sign an incomplete contract in order to receive an incomplete.

Classroom Policies/Student Conduct
Although this is an online course, it is not self-paced. You are responsible for reading
the chapters and taking notes on them, you are also responsible for turning
assignments in on time. No late work will be accepted. Students are also required
to post and respond to at least two of your peers on the discussion board for
Listening Assignments. Be respectful of your peers opinions when responding.

Work Return Policy
I will return any student work with feedback within a week from when it is due.

Emergency Information
If you are having trouble finding or viewing material throughout the course, please
do not hesitate to email me (tonga@dupage.edu) so that I can make the appropriate
changes. If there are some changes to the course schedule, I will notify you via email
and Blackboard announcements so please check often.

Other
Some of this material is difficult for beginners to understand. If you are having any
problems with any of the chapters, please do not hesitate to contact me. Although
my office hours are listed above, please email me (tonga@dupage.edu) to make an
appointment to meet, so I can assure I will be there at that time.
